PASSION PLAY Oberammergau A.D. 2020 The Thirty Years War, 1618 1648, brought central Europe more than the ravages of political and religious enmity. In 1632, the Black Plague ruthlessly swept through towns and villages, felling one out of three people. In 1633, as a desperate plea, Oberammergau elders pledge that the townspeople would reenact the Passion of Christ every 10 years if the hamlet was spared. Afterward, miraculously, not another person died. The first Passion Play took place in a meadow in 1634. It was shifted to decennial years in 1700. Over the centuries, music and lyrics were added. The town s woodcarving and unique lüftlmalerei painting traditions are showcased in the creation of stage props and scenery. Over 2,000 citizens of Oberammergau participate in the play, which is performed in German. There are approximately 1,000 onstage roles; however, other Oberammergau residents participate as musicians, backstage staff, and set and costume designers. There are also many sheep, goats and donkeys on the stage! This 2020 event will be the 42nd production of the play. Photo courtesy of Passion Play 2020, Oberammergau women and children. All who participate in the play must have been born in Oberammergau or lived in the village for at least 20 years. The musical drama will immerse you in the life of Jesus as you follow the later part of Jesus life, including the Crucifixion and Resurrection. View powerful moments such as The Last Supper, Jesus at the Mount of Olives and Jesus before Pilate and Herod. During intermission, join your group for dinner. Day 6 B Innsbruck, Austria Salzburg En route to Salzburg, delight in the majestic Alps. Discovery: Innsbruck. Explore Innsbruck in the western Austrian state. Discover Innsbruck s Old Town on a walking tour that takes you down Maria-Theresien-Strasse, the city s main boulevard, and by the Golden Roof, the Imperial Palace and Gardens and the Court Church. Free Time: Craft your own path during leisure time in Innsbruck. Perhaps take a quick journey on the Nordkette cable car, which takes you from the city center to the peaks of the rugged Nordkette mountain range. Arrive in Salzburg late this afternoon and check in to the Imlauer Hotel Pitter Salzburg. Day 7 B D Salzburg Discovery: Salzburg. While exploring Mozart s hometown, learn about his early years in the city, see the home on Getreidegasse where the great composer was born and witness other significant places in his life. Visit the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the city. This imposing building and its curtain of massive walls is one of Salzburg s most iconic sights. Free Time: Lunch and the remainder of the afternoon are available to spend as you wish. For a sweet treat, look for the local chocolate candy called Mozartkugel in confection shops. This delicacy, named after Mozart, is a delicious medley of marzipan, pistachio and nougat enrobed in chocolate. Discovery: Dinner with Mozart. Savor delicious Austrian cuisine while listening to live performances of Mozart s arias from his operas Figaro, The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni. Day 8 B Salzburg Free Time: Spend a full day at leisure. There are myriad options to entertain you, including a Sound of Music tour if you wish.

Below: Marienplatz, Munich This afternoon, check in to the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Enrichment: Germany Today. Discuss the current events and issues of modern Germany. Day 9 B L Munich, Germany This morning, embark on a train ride through the picturesque countryside to Munich, Germany. Discovery: Munich. The jovial German spirit of gemütlichkeit abounds in Munich! During a walking tour, see the city s landmarks, including the bustling Marienplatz square and the National Theatre Munich, home to the Bavarian State Opera. Step inside the 17th-century baroque Theatiner Church, which influenced the design of other baroque churches in Germany. Discovery: Beer Garden Lunch. Enjoy a hearty lunch of regional flavors at a public beer garden. This tradition has been a favorite of Munich residents since the early 19th century when Bavarian King Maximilian Joseph I enacted a law to establish the Biergarten, or beer garden in all districts. Today, the law no longer exists, but the convivial tradition of gathering at long communal tables in the gardens to eat, drink and celebrate remains strong. There are over 180 beer gardens around Munich! Day 10 B D Munich Free Time: Join today s Elective Activity to Neuschwanstein Castle, or spend your final day crafting your own adventures. If you decide to spend the day exploring on your own, you may wish to visit the Residenz, the 17th-century palace-turned-museum. ELECTIVE Neuschwanstein Castle. Journey to the white-towered wonder of Neuschwanstein Castle, set amid forested hills in a high cradle of the Bavarian, Lechtal and Allgäu Alps. This architectural masterpiece, built by Ludwig II, is the pinnacle of a magnificent panorama above the verdant meadows surrounding Schwangau. It was the inspiration for Disney s Sleeping Beauty Castle! Gather this evening to celebrate your journey with a Farewell Reception and Dinner. Day 11 B In Transit Following breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to your gateway city.a Note: Itinerary may change due to local conditions.
