EW Model Cost Analysis Philippines Experience The average unit cost will reach up to $50 per book. This includes: - book production - book writing - book review - book editing - illustrations This means that single titles underwent rigorous process entailing greater price 3/6/2019 23
Challenges for creating Illustrations Localization and contextualization of the illustrations Appropriateness of the illustration that is not genderand culturally-biased The availability of the illustrators once the stories are finished The colors (B&W) may sometimes be a challenge for pupils as they like colorful illustrations better. 3/6/2019 24
EW Model Cost Analysis Indonesia Average unit cost for creating a single title using EW approach. (Costs for writer, reviewer, illustrator) USD $60 Where most of the cost was incurred? Illustrators Then writers Biaya pembuatan sebuah buku dengan model program ini. (Biaya untuk penulis, reviu, ilustrasi) USD 60 Sebagian besar untuk biaya apa? Ilustrator Kemudian penulis 3/6/2019 ENABLING WRITERS WORKSHOP PROGRAM 25
EW Model Cost Analysis Indonesia Cont. Big challenge was in creating illustrations that carry a full meaning of the text especially for bagging levels of leveled books Professional illustrators are expensive It s difficult to find a good translator -illustrator. Tantangan besar adalah membuat ilustrasi yang sesuai dengan teks, terutama untuk buku berjenjang. Ilustrator profesional sangat mahal Sulit untuk menemukan ilustrator-penerjemah yang baik. 3/6/2019 ENABLING WRITERS WORKSHOP PROGRAM 26

Lessons Learned in Philippines Partnership must be strengthened by discussing together the desired program goals and objectives and how they can fit in to the needs. Strong government support is needed for the program to become successful Orthographies must be finalized, reviewed etc. Decodable and leveled books must be a common understanding for all. By doing this, participants must have a clearer view about this concept from the beginning. Training of teachers to install Bloom pack and talking books must also be done Grassroots approach to training must be modeled. Trainees preferably must have a touch-base with the community; must be teachers who understand how early graders learn Pool of experts must constantly work together to achieve the desired outcomes 3/6/2019 FOOTER GOES HERE 30
Lessons Learned in Indonesia (Pengalaman yang didapat) Most illustrations in Bloom were not relevant to Indonesian context Decodable books are a new concept and challenging to write. Begin with leveled books first It is helpful to provide some good samples of decodable and leveled books in the language during the writing workshops Get all participants computers installed and set up with Bloom software before the writing session begins.
