May 2018 Commission Report Nancy Howe, County Librarian Summer Reading is one month away... Reading takes you everywhere... especially this summer at all SCCLD Libraries. Reading can help you see a new place or learn what it s like inside a flower...really thanks to our sponsors, Gilroy Gardens, the SF 49ers and The Tech Museum. This year s GRAND PRIZE is a Unique 49ers Game Day experience! All kids ages 5-12, teens and adults who enroll through Beanstack and read and log at least 5 books by July 31 st are entered into the drawing for this amazing prize. Check out our website for more patron prize details at www.sccl.org/summerreading2018. Your library is a special place in your city. All kinds of people come to take advantage of the wonderful programs, fun spaces and of course, the books. And with our fabulous online library, some simply visit us virtually. AND all of these visitors are part of the SCCLD community, and Summer Reading helps build this community of readers. All reading is good reading, and we want all of our residents to be a part of the fun. Good Reads Book Review by Jan Sanders Have you ever read a book that had blurbs that said something like tremendously funny, but you failed to find the humor? That was me, when I read The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. I did like the book, and it is well written. It is about a half- French, half-vietnamese man who is a communist sleeper agent in America after the end of the Vietnam War. It is a powerful story that will jolt you awake about the politics of war and the lives of people it effects. While it made me giggle at times, I would not classify it as funny. It is compelling and tense. I would put it in the thriller category. The Sympathizer is a must read it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2016. Winner of The Edgar Award for best novel in 2016, and winner of the 2015 Centre for Fiction First Novel Prize. 5
