Hart s cotriutio to music i Australia, ad later Hawaii, is remarkale, ad he distiguished himself as a composer, teacher ad metor as well as a coductor ad writer. With the exceptio of Charles Edward Horsley, he was the fiest orchestrator to work i Australia efore 1930, ad his musical ifluece i this coutry lasted for a cosiderale time, especially through his studets, icludig Margaret Sutherlad ad Peggy GlavilleHicks. Both as teacher ad metor, he was especially ecouragig to female composers. Bor i Brockley, Ket i 1874, Fritz Hart was a chorister at Westmister Aey ad studied at the Royal College of Music, where he formed lifelog friedships with Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaugha Williams ad Graville Batock. He migrated to Australia i 1909 ad for may years was Director of the Alert Street Coservatorium of Music i Meloure, i successio to G.W.L. MarshallHall. After his death i Hawaii i 1949, all of his scores were retured to Meloure, where they are held i the Latroe Lirary of the State Lirary of Victoria. Hart s output icluded twetytwo operas, two largescale symphoies, two strig quartets, several cocertos ad a Symphoic Rhapsody for violi ad orchestra, three soatas for violi ad piao, ad choral, orga, ad other keyoard music. He is remarkale for his 500odd sogs, set to diverse texts, icludig poems of the Celtic revival ad those of may Australia poets. These sogs have ot ee forgotte: Stephe Bafield, for example, gives them serious cosideratio i his 1985 study of twetiethcetury British sog.
