Hiram iu, Deats Papers Accession no, 00 The Hirara ^, Deats Papers came to the Society by becru.est in 196j. Mr Deats was Secretary and Librarian for VJ years, and most of his personal papers were mixed with those he collected for the society. His heirs moved them out of the house, and later to the doclety. As the papers were in no kind of order, generally speaking, it is assumed that the disarray of the papers was due to the carelessness of those who moved then. As far as possible, the ^resent collection has been separated into his personal papers, and her has reason believe a source was originally among the Deats papers, he should consult the Hunterdon County Historical Collection. rlote that the latter ts. When using the collection note the following: In accordance with established procedures, the collection has been arranged "as found" as far as possible. Therefore :rhen a bundle has been found, it is kept as such. The folders are so marked. If s. folder contains the entire bundle it is marked simply "Bundle". If the amount of material makes it necessary to use more than one folder, the folder will be marked "Bundle - s vl to 50", or what ever the number of the folders may be. The number me,rked "items", e.g. "7 items", is the number of items is that of the folder, not the entire "bundle. The same rules apply for those marked "Sub-bundle". Within the folders, the papers clipped together is the arrangement of hr Deats, therefore some dates may overlap, on either side, the dates of the chronological order of the other items in the folder. You will notice that there are several bundles of correspondence such as Hankin, Honeyman, et al., but there may be other correspondence with them among the folders marked "Correspondence, Miscellaneous". This Is In accordance with the principle of keeping the collection "as found." The numbers on the folders are the number of pages rather than the entire item, h.g., a letter of 4 pages is counted as -!- items. Exception; permanently fastened together. This is to ensure the pages of the letters are kept together, and returned to their proper place. The Deats genealogical books and papers are separate, and found in the library in the vertical file, and on the shelves. Do not confuse Hira,m 2. Deats with his father, Hiram Deats, nor with his cousin who signed himself Hiram Deats, Jr. See next page.
