Happy 948 th Birthday, English! (You don t look a day over 929!) QUIZ FOR MONDAY: Study and memorize 10 prefixes, 5 suffixes and 20 root words. You will be given a list of the affixes, and you will have to define the ten in each category you know. The quiz will be a list of the word parts without any definition. You ll have to pick out the thirty that you have memorized and write the meanings for each. Make sure you know ten from each category. REVIEW SHEET: Look at the meaning of the prefix, root or suffix; then, look at the words used as examples. Try and picture what that word means. based on the affixes meaning. For example, Scib means write; so think about scribbling or describe as writing. A doctor writes a prescription for medicine. Again, he/she is WRITING! scrib, script write scribe, scribble, inscribe, describe, subscribe, prescribe, manuscript Another technique is to put together the words parts. For example, auto means self (automatic, autopilot) and bio means life (biology and biohazard) and graph means write (graphite, telegraph); all of those put together make AUTOBIOGRAPHY self+life+writing! An autobiography is a life story written by the person the story is about! BIRTHDAY CARD: Your card should be creative, colorful, and neat. It should LOOK LIKE A REAL BIRTHDAY CARD! You need to include your favorite word, its pronunciation and part of speech, its definitions, and its etymology (word origins), and, finally, you need to use your word in a sentence. The etymology needs to be its complete history. Do not just write late Latin. Use the sites provided to give a full history. Your favorite word cannot be your name! Here are great websites for etymology help: o http://etymonline.com o http://oxforddictionaries.com
