CORNERSTONE CHURCH On November 26th, seven of our chamber ensembles, which are groups of musicians from the department who gather in small groups to perform songs together, had the opportunity to perform at a Fun Fair at the Cornerstone Community Church! They entertained youth by playing festive Christmas carols and chorales and spreading joy and glee throughout their performances. Their audiences seemed to thoroughly enjoy their performance! 2 Cheer
LES MIS CHAMBER PERFORMANCE On December 3rd, the MDHS Chamber Choir performed at the Toronto Presbyterian Church alongside the Upper Canada Chorus, conducted by Brian Rawlins. Having won eight Tony Awards, including best musical, "Les Miserables" is an enduring piece of musical and poetic brilliance. The cast and choir sang the music of Les Miserables in recital style, accompanied by the Toronto Pops Orchestra. It was an amazing opportunity to be singing with over 1000 talented young singers, and select cast members form the original Les Misérables production. Great job Chamber Choir! "The singers there were very professional. It was an honour to even have the opportunity to perform alongside them. It was a truly inspiring and fun experience, one that you really can't get anywhere else. Performing in the chamber ensemble this year so far has been so rewarding. - Pooja Kadakia (Grade 11, Vocalist) 3
WINTER CONCERT This years Sounds of the Season winter concert was a blast! Both nights were amazing with family, friends, and even teachers on their feet by the end. All the bands, choirs and ensembles put on an astounding musical performance with the hard work and dedication of all of the music students, Mr. Caswell, Mrs. Caswell, Mr. Harrison, Mr. Ioannou, and our backstage crew. The final act was All I Wanted for Christmas. Who knew music could be such a Joy to the World. Everyone is already excited for the Spring Concert! 4
This year was amazing and was so fun to open the entire concert! All my friends and I had a great time singing along to all the Christmas music for the final performance. - Jessica Johnson (Grade 10) 5
GRADE 8 INFORMATION NIGHTS Elementary Concert Night Markham music students had an amazing time performing for the future students of MDHS on December 6. Elementary schools had the opportunity to see and hear about just what being an MDHS high school music student really meansexcellence in playing, the many opportunities that music students get, the high standard that we proud Marauders set, and of course the many friendships that are created through the program. Grade 8 Info Night This year s Grade 8 Parent Night was filled with the sounds of MDHS ensembles. HOLIDAY BASH Salvation Army Toy Drive The holiday season greets us with fresh snow, hot chocolate, and of course the Markham Music s Annual Holiday Bash Toy Drive! A relatively new MDHS Music tradition, music students brought toys to Holiday Bash to be given to the Salvation Army for children who aren t as fortunate. This year, we collected over 200 donated gifts and made memorable holiday experiences for children all over our community, and that was the best gift of all! Everyone had an amazing night filled with laughter, gingerbread house decorating, food, and music.
