Music Theory Blizzard Bag Assignments Form and Analysis Project As part of our ongoing work with form and analysis, this project is designed to allow you to analyze the form and harmony of a piece of music and discuss how the composer creates an original composition out using these musical elements. The project is chunked into three assignments for the blizzard bag work. Assignment #1: Complete tasks 1-4. Assignment #2: Complete tasks 5-7. Assignment #3: After completing tasks 1 7, create a five paragraph essay to discuss the work. 1

Assignment #1 Harmonic Analysis Listen to a recording of the piece here. If the link does not work, the address is http://pianosociety.com/protected/chopin-28-4-stahlbrand.mp3. Find the answers to the following questions. Task 1: What is the key of this composition? List all of the chords for this key. Task 2: Analyze measures 1 12 and measures 24 25. You will need to list one chord per line. (HINT: The chords in measures 3 4 and 7 8 are borrowed from another key. You are welcome! ) Task #3: Identify all of the circled non-harmonic tones. They are lettered a through i. (Again, you are very welcome for this hint! ) Task #4: Identify the cadences that are marked in measures 10 12 and measures 24 25. 4

Find the answers to the following questions. Task #5: What is the form of this composition? Task #6: Identify the motive of the piece. What role does this musical idea play in the phrase and period structure of the piece? Task #7: How does the melody function in the piece? What is the melody doing in measure 12? Task #8: Compare the measures you analyzed with the measures you did not analyze. How are they the same? How are they different? How does the harmony move throughout the piece? (HINT: Musical elements to consider include use of motives, melody, and chord progression) Task #9: How do all of these musical elements come together to create an original, creative piece of music? 5

Assignment #3 Five Paragraph Analytical Essay After completing the first two assignments, you have all the materials necessary to create a five paragraph essay about your composer. Please organize your essay in the following manner. Paragraph 1 Introduction Material in this paragraph should introduce the information you will be sharing in the body of your essay. Paragraph 2 Body of essay This paragraph should discuss the harmony of the piece. Your paragraph should cover the work you completed in Assignment #1. Paragraph 3 Body of essay This paragraph should discuss the form of the piece. Your paragraph should cover the work you completed in Assignment #2, tasks 5 8. Paragraph 4 Body of essay This paragraph will discuss how the harmony, melody and form work together to create an original musical composition. Your response to Task #9 will be the basis for this paragraph. Paragraph 5 Conclusion This paragraph will summarize the ideas you have presented in your essay. 6
