Contact (2018 19) Guest edited by Hannah Black Deadline for submissions: 1 March 2018 A Call for Open Submissions to a New Series This is a call for submissions to work with me and the editorial team at Book Works on a project that takes the form of a small book. This book can comprise fiction, theory, poetry, fragments, drawings, texts, graphic novels, annotated drawings, poems, diagrams, or anything else. The very loose theme is contact. I m looking for works that encounter the complications of encounter: friendship/enmity, scenes, screens, movements, moments of togetherness. Contact can span from moments of intensity to networks of alienation, from the professional to the personal, from the colonial to the queer, from the stranger to the extra-terrestrial. Contact can be a word for wordless physical closeness, whether sex or violence, or for conversation. I would like it to indicate an aspect of the shared everyday just kind of rubbing along together, hanging out, in our many configurations or else, as a noun ( add to contacts ), it can signal individuals as possibilities, as usages. It can interrupt a loss, as when word unexpectedly comes from a missing person, or pierce a plenum, as in sci-fi movies where aliens reach out or invade, or when colonizers do the same in known reality. I m using contact to mean the ever-present possibility that the social just is, that it s there, an indifferent medium, an amniotic fluid for whatever the life among us is pregnant with. But you can write about any of these things or none of them or whatever they make you think of. Hannah Black Open Submission Contact is a new series guested edited by Hannah Black and selected from open submission. Black and Book Works will select three projects to commission for publication in early Summer 2019. We are interested in proposals in English, from international artists and from all sections of the community. Selection will be made by Hannah Black and Book Works and announced by the end of April 2018. How to Apply To apply please return the following before the deadline to: Hannah Black c/o Book Works 19 Holywell Row London, EC2A 4JB Cover sheet with your name, address, email, and contact telephone number Proposed outline of no more than 500 words

A 1,000 word sample of the project outlined for publication in the Contact series No more than 4 examples of previous and relevant work One-page CV Completed equal opportunities form A registration fee of 10.00 Submissions must be hard copy. Hand-written submissions or electronic files will not be accepted. Late submissions will not be accepted. Eligibility Proposals are welcome from all sections of society, irrespective of nationality and residence, and including practitioners from different culturally diverse backgrounds. Editorial and Design Book Works will coordinate all aspects of editing and production, including decisions involving design, budget, promotion and distribution of the book. Commissions will be edited by Hannah Black and Book Works, as a co-operative process, with the aim of producing projects sympathetic to the ambitions of the series. The editors would expect to work closely with the commissioned artist/author/collective on shaping the project and on any redrafts and revisions. You will be consulted at each stage of the process and expected to help take decisions about the way in which the work is presented. You will also be asked to work to deadlines and attend meetings as agreed, and must be willing to take some active part in the launch/promotion of the book. The books will be distributed and promoted by Book Works in UK and rest of world. Feedback Due to the volume of applications we will not be able to give any specific feedback on individual proposals unless short-listed. Book Works does, however, run free monthly artists surgeries on all aspects of publishing and self-publishing.
