Vocal Music Opportunities at JMUES In addition to weekly general music class and the instrumental music program, JMUES offers the following music enrichment opportunities: Grade level instruction in each chorus is open to all students who would like to participate. Students who participate in a grade level chorus will be provided instruction that extends beyond the vocal instruction and content in the general music classroom. Grade Six Chorus (meets during school hours Mondays, beginning September 21) - Students may come directly to rehearsal when their morning bus or carpool arrives. Students may be dropped off at the main office, beginning no earlier than 8:10AM. - All rehearsals for Grade Six Chorus BEGIN at 8:30AM. Students who wish to arrive for individual skill practice and student collaboration time may do so no earlier than 8:10AM. In case of a school cancellation or delayed opening, chorus rehearsal on that day will be cancelled. - Students enrolled in Grade Six Chorus are instructed in advanced vocal technique and repertoire that expands upon the content and standards in Grade Five Chorus. - Grade Six Chorus will begin on Monday, September 21. Grade Five Chorus (meets during school hours Fridays, beginning September 25) - Students may come directly to rehearsal when their morning bus or carpool arrives. Students may be dropped off at the main office, beginning no earlier than 8:10AM. - All rehearsals for Grade Five Chorus BEGIN at 8:30AM. Students who wish to arrive for individual skill practice and student collaboration time may do so no earlier than 8:10AM. In case of a school cancellation or delayed opening, chorus rehearsal on that day will be cancelled. - Grade Five Chorus will begin on Friday, September 25. Rehearsal Schedule The rehearsal schedule for both choruses is as follows on their rehearsal day: 8:10-8:30AM 8:30-9:05AM 9:05AM Individual Skill Guided Practice, Student collaboration time Rehearsal- Large Group Instruction Pack-Up and dismissal to classrooms

Music Policies at JMUES Concert Attire Unless notified otherwise, JMUES concert attire is as follows: - White shirts or sweaters, black pants or skirts, and dark shoes. - Please avoid tee shirts, sweatshirts, blue jeans, sneakers, and other casual clothing. - Skirts must be knee length or longer. - For safety reasons, ladies are asked to keep heels low and chunky, if any at all. - Students may choose to express their individuality with colorful neckties or hair ribbons. - Because of allergies, please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne. - All clothing must adhere to the JMUES dress code, as outlined in the student/parent handbook. - Of course, we realize that your children are growing quickly, and we do not expect you to purchase new shoes and clothing that will be outgrown by the next concert. Rehearsal Materials and Home Practice - Each student is expected to have a pencil, highlighter, a two-pocket folder, and their music for each vocal rehearsal. Students in different instrumental and vocal groups are encouraged to have one folder for each group. - Each student is expected to practice the learned vocal techniques and skills during each rehearsal and concert. Additional practice outside of rehearsal is strongly encouraged. Rehearsal and Concert Attendance - It is expected that families of students who have enrolled in the vocal music opportunities at JMUES will be committed to their child attending each rehearsal, performance or concert. - Students are expected to model the JMUES guidelines for respect, responsibility and safety outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook in addition to the schoolwide expectations for all rehearsals and concerts. Student Withdrawal It is our hope that each student who enrolls in the vocal program at JMUES will practice personal perseverance and commitment, there will be some who are unable to complete the year. For these students we ask for a letter of withdrawal, written and signed by a parent/guardian. When making this decision, please keep in mind that withdrawal in the same month as a concert is neither respectful nor responsible. **WE ASK THAT GRADE SIX CHORUS STUDENTS COMMIT FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.** Vocal study and artistry is quite rewarding. It is also rigorous and can sometimes be challenging. At JMUES we ask that each student make it their goal to complete the vocal program for the entire school year. In special circumstances, students may withdraw at the beginning of a new graded quarter.
