I. Motivation and Purposes With the changing of technology and the exchanging of cultures, each country is no longer a single unit, but part of a global village. Because of the frequent contact among countries, learning a common language becomes a critical issue for everyone. English functions not only as a language, but also a bridge to connect people and cultures all over the world. So how can we share our unique culture with the world in an international language? Our product tries to offer an answer through a different and particular perspective. I.1. Motivation Children always play an important role in the future. We chose the familiar story Chinese Zodiac and combined it with English proverbs, so that children can not only understand the meaning behind the Chinese zodiac, but also learn English proverbs. The integration of Chinese and Western cultures should be launched worldwide. Hopefully, our children will command both the fluency of English and the knowledge of different cultures. multi-cultured citizens of the global village. The following are our purposes of making this interactive book. (1) To make the children familiar with the story of Chinese Zodiac. (2) To enhance the children s comprehension of English proverbs. (3) To make them know the meanings and the characteristics behind the Chinese Zodiac. (4) To help them self-thinking through the interaction with the book. 1
II. Specific Features and Creative Qualities Our book is very attractive because of the particular design of its contents and layout. With its colorful pictures and cute animals, the interactive book can effectively arouse children s interest in learning English. Also, it enables children to think by themselves. Here are some features of the book. II.1. Interesting and Inspiring Story In our book, we make children learn English proverbs via the story of Chinese Zodiac. It makes our book livelier because of the characters of the animals. Getting acquainted with the animated story, children can not only realize the meaning behind the story but also understand the unique folk tale in their culture. The reason why we choose the Chinese Zodiac as our topic lies in its lack of prevalence around the world. In terms of zodiac, there are different characteristics respectively between Chinese and western one. However, compared with the Chinese zodiac, western zodiac signs are much more commonly known to the world. We hope that through the story of the Chinese Zodiac, we can popularize our culture to other countries. More and more people can understand traditional story and foreigners can know about their own Zodiac and the origin. II.2. Useful and Colloquial Proverbs The book aims to teach children not only the meaning behind the story but also some useful English proverbs. We have two sets of English proverbs in our book. the first part, there are proverbs about animals. In For example, A gloved cat catches no mouse. The meaning in Chinese is 不願吃苦的人成不了大事業. In the second part, there are proverbs about the meaning of the story. For example, although sheep feels very uncomfortable in the river, he still keeps on going. II.3.Interactive and Creative Design We chose an interaction way to make children read creatively and interactively, which makes the children not only self-oriented but also self-motivated in learning English. Each page of the book has an interactive exercise. After reading an episode, on the lower part of the pages, we leave some blanks to be filled in about the English proverbs concerning the animal mentioned. Adults can discuss the story with the children and help them to judge what kind of behavior the animal is doing, and then 2
choose the related proverb. On the last two pages are twenty-one English proverbs about our characters, which not only allow children to learn the proverbs, but also help them to judge which proverbs are more suitable for the episode. What s better, the process enhances the interaction with their parents. II.4. Handy and Playful Proverb Cards Moreover, each proverb card has been particularly designed. Readers can consult the English proverbs to find the Chinese translations immediately to prevent the time wasted in finding its translation. As long as children turn over the English proverbs, the Chinese translation will show up, without labors in understanding the meaning of the proverb. like. Methods III.1.Collecting and Analyzing the Data With the intention in mind, we decide to make our product suitable for children especially. In the beginning, we went to several bookstores to search for English proverb book for children of modern day, but we only found the English proverb books which are much suitable for adults. Therefore, we came up with the idea that we should make the reading of proverbs more interesting and appealing for the children. Then we searched the Internet to find different pictures for our story and the animals of Chinese zodiac. After collecting bunches of information and pictures, we tried to analyze the data and the characteristics of our interactive book to make the final decision. III.2. Analyzing the interactive parts and character s personality Writing the story was our first important step. First, we analyzed the meaning of the Chinese Zodiac and found some English proverbs which were suitable for the story. Second, we added some interactive parts in our book. The character s personality is also an important part. After checking the contents, we started to do the preparatory work and scheduled time to make the book. book into interactive E-book too. Theories and Principles Based on IV.1. Interaction Means Activeness and Dominance Our theory is based on the simple idea of learning from active participation. By way of interaction, the learners can actively and effectively take part in the whole learning process. The definition of interactive book is transferring the words and images via talking. Children can learn from the story by participating in the contents prepared for them. Through the process of reading and playing or guessing with the book, the children are engaged in a two-way reading, which is the core of interaction. IV.2. Positive Influence of Personality The principle of our product is cultivating personality while learning and playing. It s convenient for children to develop their personality through reading traditional fairy tales or fables. With the developing of Internet, nowadays the cultivation of personality or even everyday habits is transferred more to the electronic 4
side. That s why the E-book is getting more and more essential and indispensable for modern people. We tried to jump on the bandwagon to take advantage of the technology, making our product into an E-book with the intention to attract more children. Hoping learning from the proverbs with the story, they can also cultivate a proper character. IV.3. I m convinced that falling in love with the world of book can cultivate and train many skills helpful to our life. Functions and Operation of Our Product V.1.Funtions The functions of our product are just like what is mentioned in the specific features. It is interesting and inspiring. We make children learn English proverbs via the story of Chinese Zodiac. Children can not only realize the meaning behind the story but also understand the unique folk tale in their culture. We aim to popularize our culture to the world. The proverbs are useful and colloquial, and they can teach children not only the meaning and useful English proverbs. Our product is interactive and creative, which functions big in making the children self-oriented and self-motivated in learning English. V.2.Operation V.2.1 Available in E-book We decided to make an E-Book, so that users can more easily read. By animated design, animals seem to come alive. The sound of e-book also makes people feel fascinated. We also plan to set up a QR Code in our book. Therefore, readers can 5
read it at any time and any place to enter the colorful world of story. The operation of our product is interactive and easy. The one who takes our book can choose to read the whole in a time, or pause at whatever they want to interact with the book. They pause to choose the proverbs and fill them into the blanks. They might also read the whole proverbs about animals directly, and then they read the story. There is still another choice which is checking the E-book directly, where there are interactive animation of the story and the proverbs. V.2.2 Learning English Proverbs As You Wish To make learning in a convenient way, we also made a pamphlet of English proverbs, collecting all the proverbs in the story. The pamphlet is available for learners at any time and any place, such as on the bus, in the bathroom, or on bed, as you like it. VI. Photos throughout the Project VI.1. Preparing VI.1.1. VI.1.6. Making our E-Book Owing to the growing number of people using 3C products, we also turn our book into an E-Book. The difference between book and E-Book is animation and sound. Animated animals are livelier and the sound can make the story more. VI.2.Shooting the video VI.2.1.Preparing After practicing many times, we finally shot our video. We displayed our function of proverb book clearly. After retaking the video again and again, we finally finished the video smoothly. After finishing shooting our video, we added captions and animations in the video to make it more attractive and vivid. VI.2.1.2.Experience the English proverb book with children We took pictures after we experienced the book with children. The most important is they were falling in love with English and they did enjoy the process of it. We all learned a lot and got lots of unforgettable memories. We wish we can promote our English learning to more other children someday. 8
