Also please read the guidelines on the last page. Meet Our Adjudicator: Shannon Coates Mezzo soprano, Shannon Coates possesses a finely tuned, warm instrument and a commanding stage presence. Some of her performance highlights include a Lincoln Center debut in 2009 in Burge's Mass for Prisoners of Conscience, Handel's Messiah in performances throughout Ontario and in New York, alto soloist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion at a sold-out performance at the Newman Centre in Toronto conducted by Matthew Otto, and alto soloist in Weber's Missa Sanctus in Eb and in Vaughan William's Serenade to Music with the Blue Bridge Festival Choir and Chamber Orchestra in Newmarket, ON, a solo recital for Amanda Johnston's In Recital Series, alto soloist in Vivaldi's Magnificat with the Toronto Chamber Choir, conducted by Mark Vuornien, alto soloist in Mozart's Mass in C under the baton of David Holler, her first doctoral recital, which featured a programme of contemporary works, including four cycles by living Canadian composers, her second doctoral recital; a celebration of German Art Song with pianist, William Aide, and her final doctoral recital with the University of Toronto's Head of Collaborative Studies, Steven Philcox, which featured the world premiere of Alexander Rapoport's cycle, Three English Love Songs Shannon had her operatic debut at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season as Romeo in Opera By Request's production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Further operatic roles include Larina in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Flora in Verdi's La Traviata, and Cherubino in Essential Opera's inaugural production, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. Shannon holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, a Masters of Vocal Performance, Specializing in Vocal Pedagogy and is currently a Doctoral Candidate (Vocal Performance, Specializing in Vocal Pedagogy), all at the University of Toronto. In demand for her academic work, Shannon has been invited to present aspects of her research at The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, The Voice Foundation's Annual Symposium in Philadelphia, and The International Congress of Voice Teachers, which convened in Brisbane, Australia. Shannon is the 2013 recipient of the prestigious National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Foundation Voice Pedagogy Award. In addition to her academic and performance careers, Shannon maintains active voice studios in Holland Landing and in Toronto, instructs undergraduate vocal pedagogy at the University of Toronto and at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and is a Part- Time Instructor of Applied Voice at Tyndale University in North York. Shannon is an executive member of NATS Ontario, a founding member of the Student Chapter of NATS at the University of Toronto, and a consulting member of the Student Chapter of NATS at Wilfrid Laurier University. Shannon's classical voice students regularly achieve First Class Honours with Distinction in Royal Conservatory of Music and in Conservatory Canada examinations, win scholarships and Best In Class designations at voice festivals, and are enrolled in tertiary institution music programmes throughout North America. Shannon's rock/pop students have released several albums and her musical theatre students can be seen on stage in venues throughout the Greater Toronto Area. In demand as a master class technician, and as an adjudicator, Shannon most recently conducted three days of masterclasses at the Medicine Hat Conservatory of Music, and has adjudicated for both the Ontario and Newfoundland Provincial Music Festivals. Shannon is a member in good standing of The Voice Foundation, of the College Music Society, of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association, and of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Please fill out a Class Admission Form for each class you are performing in. This must be completed before it is time for you to perform. Please use the form provided and make copies as required. There will be forms available at all Festival Classes. Please hand this form to the adjudicator or secretary along with your music when your class is called. 2. Please have your original music ready for the adjudicator. This should be open to the composition you are performing and clearly marked with your name. You can mark the spot in the book with the Class Admission Form. Please give this to the adjudicator or secretary when your class is called and pick it up directly after your class has been adjudicated. 3. The times scheduled in the programme are approximate. You should plan to be ready to play at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time - and to stay for at least one hour after the time scheduled for your class. In addition it is excellent experience to attend as many of the adjudicated classes as possible. Make a day of it. 4. Only videotaping, recording or photographing of your own family members is permitted. If you wish to record other performers you will need permission from their parents. 5. Please set cell phones on an inaudible ring - and hold conversations outside of the performance venue. 6. Please enter and exit the performance venue quietly between performances. Please do not enter or exit while a student is performing. As there is no admission fee there will not always be someone at the door. Please quietly close the door behind you.
