Welcome Welcome to Duneira s fourth year of events, our August to December program. Step back in time and experience spring at Duneira. Our heritage garden features plants from yesteryear, which boast an array of perfumes, described in writings set in the Victorian period as having a heady scent. Our rhododendrons and azaleas have to be seen and smelt to be believed. Our spring is about one month later than Melbourne s because of our cooler climate so we have planned an open garden on Sunday 3 November to maximize our blue-bell display. Our wide-ranging events continue to expand to meet the needs of all age groups. New events include exhibitions of heritage American cars and Flynn Silver, meet the author Toni Jordan, a whole-day bushwalk around Mt Macedon and a book club in real style, set in our library with literary agent Sheila Drummond. Children s Theatre returns to our fabulous southern lawn. Plus we have more of the usual, including open gardens. We continue to provide a canvas to explore new ideas, offer the chance to converse with inspiring guest lecturers from Australia and Spain, and, with our health and wellbeing series, the opportunity to look after yourself. Our cultural activities are unique in Australia s cultural setting, generously supported by the S.R. Stoneman Foundation, in the manner of the great European and American philanthropic collections. Less than one hour out of Melbourne, with its own magical climate and fresh air, Duneira is a place of timeless elegance and beauty, with a touch of old England. Come and enjoy. Be inspired! Dr Jacqueline Ogeil Stoneman & His Vision Duneira s seventh owner, Stuart Rusden Stoneman, was born in Castlemaine in 1927. He was the only son of local businessman Thomas Stoneman and became the third generation of the Stoneman family to work in the grocery industry. Motivated by a grand vision and study undertaken overseas in 1950, Stuart returned to Castlemaine and implemented self-service grocery stores eventually developing the business into the successful Stoneman s Supermarket chain with additional stores in Bendigo, Echuca and Ballarat. Upon his death in 2002, Duneira was bequeathed to the care of The S.R. Stoneman Foundation to manage for the benefit of local and broader communities. Stoneman s vision for Duneira was to maintain and preserve Duneira, to open it to the public, on a smaller scale but in the spirit of the Huntington Collection in California, and for it to continue to be a place where people have the opportunity to learn and relax in an aesthetically cultivated environment; to enable interested individuals and groups to have access to the property; to view and examine the various collections and attractions; and in certain instances to enjoy suitable social and other functions. 4 House & Garden Events House Garden & Garden Events Events Garden Tours Respected local gardeners will lead you on a guided tour of the spectacular Duneira heritage garden c.1872. Lectures & Courses Book Club Plus With Literary Agent Sheila Drummond Join us in the splendid surrounds of the Duneira library to talk about books! Lectures &Courses Truth, Lies and Carelessness Julian Burnside QC AO Saturday 28 September 4.15pm 5.15pm $25 full / $20 conc 8 Lectures & Courses The point of language is to convey meaning. Ideally, it should do so accurately. Not all writers honour this ideal. The purpose of language may be betrayed by carelessness, foolishness or malice. The results are found in three camps. In the first camp, we have dead language, which contains no intelligible communication at all. It is used as a sham to disguise the fact that the intellectual cupboard is bare. In the second, we find misleading language, which fudges an embarrassing or inconvenient truth. And in the third camp we find double speak: language used as a stalking horse for quite different ideas that dare not speak their name. Acclaimed lawyer and writer Julian Burnside returns to Duneira to share his insights, wisdom and brilliance. Over three sessions we will discuss: a classic, a biography and a work of fiction by an Australian author, with an additional twist. September: Celebrate 200 years of Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice. Helen Garner recently commented that she found it exhilarating with a freshness So take another look! October: Madeleine St John was the first Australian woman to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Her novels sparkle with warmth and wit and yet her own life reveals a far more troubled story of loss and abandonment. Spanning the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, Helen Trinca s Madeleine is an unforgettable insight into the life of a fiercely talented and a highly-acclaimed Australian writer. November: Toni Jordan s latest book Nine Days is our choice this month. Best known for her romantic comedies Addition and Fall Girl, Toni Jordan has broached a new genre for her third novel. Nine Days is a sprawling family drama set before and after World War II, beginning in the backstreets of Richmond and flipping back and forth until the inner-city suburb gentrifies into a latte mecca. An unforgettable novel of love and folly and heartbreak. Author Toni Jordan will join us in this discussion. Saturdays 28 Sept, 26 Oct & 30 Nov 4.00pm 5.30pm $45 per session (includes book and afternoon tea and Toni Jordan visit in November). Books will be mailed on receipt of booking. Lectures & Courses 9

Lectures & Courses Lectures & Courses The Gardenist With Michael McCoy Several reviewers of revered gardening specialist Michael McCoy's latest garden book The Gardenist have claimed that it has changed the way they think about their gardens. Join us to hear of Michael s unique take on plants as both architecture and decoration. (Note that a garden tour follows this lecture with Michael). Saturday 26 October 12.00pm 1.00pm $25 full / $20 conc Television and Other Catastrophes John Clarke and Bryan Dawe John and Bryan have long been engaged in public discourse on a range of issues. They ve been doing interviews together for 25 years, they worked tirelessly on organising the Sydney Olympics and have won some awards for still being on television at the combined age of 130. In this intimate chat session we ll hear about their work together and separately and we ll also give the audience an opportunity to ask questions. Understanding Opiate and Cocaine Addiction with Emeritus Professor Derek Denton AC Renowned scientist Derek Denton is part of a research team that has made an internationally recognized discovery. In this talk he will reveal that the neural machinery underlying hard drug addiction involves the neural mechanisms evolved to subserve salt appetite. Whereas situations of drug addiction may have begun by peer pressure or social pressure, addiction is actually a metabolic disorder of the brain. The sodium (salt) appetite data opens a new way to tackle the problem. Professor Denton is the founder and Director Emeritus of the Howard Florey Institute, Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne and a consultant at the Baker Research Institute. Concerts Concerts From a Viennesse Salon Anne Harvey-Nagl, violin (Vienna), John O Donnell, piano The Viennese home in the 19th century was the focus of family social and intellectual life. Salons were opened to artists wishing to air their talents, and these house concerts reflected the general shift of musical patronage by aristocracy to the middle class. Today, Salon concerts are still popular in Vienna, and having absorbed this culture for the past 22 years, Anne endeavours to bring this very special atmosphere to Duneira. The program consists of much-loved recital works Beethoven s Sonata no. 9 for Violin and Piano Kreutzer Sonata, Dvoraks s 4 Romantic Pieces, and Massenet's Meditation from the opera Thaïs. Anne is Concert Master with the Vienna Volksoper, returns to Australia to perform in the Australian World Orchestra and is accompanied by the multi-talented John O Donnell. Since She Whom I Loved Featuring Daniel Thompson, tenor This program brings together the works of two great, and very different, English composers. Benjamin Britten s settings of The Holy Sonnets of John Donne' are a confronting collection that explore death and the darkness surrounding it. On Wenlock Edge a cycle of six songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams takes a more ethereal approach, exploring the passing of time and life. Rising young local star Daniel Thompson is joined by the Lucca String Quartet and John O Donnell piano.
