SENIOR SCHOOL MUSIC COURSE OVERVIEW Title: Keyboard Lab I Prerequisite (s): Music in Society 2 credit (s) 60 hour (s) S2 - S4 level (s) Course Code: required or elective Course Description This course is for both beginners and those wishing to renew their acquaintance with the piano. Emphasis is on fundamentals: reading music, posture, hand position, fingering, rhythm, chord structure and progressions, improvisation, and performance. Students will develop an awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the basic elements of music through piano playing. This course is a foundation for further study of the piano and its literature. The requirements for this course are as follows: Course Requirements Performance Assessments: Students will play: - four major scales - two minor scales - arpeggios in the same keys class participation performance from workbook or selected songs aural test for chord structures ABRSM grade 1/2 60% Product Assessments: - transcription of chord progressions - create lead sheets for an accompaniment demonstrating different styles - create accompaniments demonstrating different styles using various rhythms, temp and dynamics 20% Written Assessments: tests and quizzes on: - scales - key signatures - notes - harmonic structure - chord identification - musical elements and devices 20% Total 100% Ministry of Education 2008 Page 1
