Welcome Tickets 029 2039 1391 Free Performances www.rwcmd.ac.uk 3 JazzTime in the We are delighted to be joining with Welsh National Opera to celebrate Free Spirits to take us into 2013. Whilst WNO focuses on the thematic links between two operas, Lulu and The Cunning Little Vixen, our season will take you on a different journey in music, drama and opera. We ll travel across time to meet historical free spirits both real and imagined ranging from Edith Piaf to Miss Havisham, whilst the Richard Burton Company present originals takes on both Hamlet and Anne Boleyn. Our talented musicians and actors will lead the celebrations of Burns Night and St David s Day as well as giving numerous performances throughout the spring. And you no longer have to be in Cardiff to enjoy the free-spiritness of JazzTime, as our young jazz musicians head off on their first tour of Wales in February visiting venues in Holyhead, Brecon, Caernarfon and Neath to spread the foyer vibe! Beyond our Free Spirits season, we have a full and exciting programme for you. We welcome back some outstanding Welsh musicians - Elin Manahan-Thomas, Catrin Finch and Rebecca Evans - as well as hosting the college debut of the stunning counter-tenor Iestyn Davies. We are pleased to be further enhancing our links with both Welsh National Opera and Music Theatre Wales, with residencies featuring the future stars of opera from the National Opera Studio and a masterclass with eminent composer, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. We also launch a yearlong celebration of Benjamin Britten s centenary with our own production of The Rape of Lucretia in March. There is much to enjoy here and we look forward to welcoming you. Free Spirits Preview Tickets 029 2039 1391 www.rwcmd.ac.uk 5 What is it that makes a free spirit? Courage to live life as you choose? Radical ideas? Love? Loss? All of these and then some, there is no single definition a free spirit appears only in the eye of the beholder......and what better place to celebrate this luminescent characteristic than with the exuberant young artists of the Royal Welsh College? Highlights of the season include the Richard Burton Company s all-female Hamlet and our celebration of the ultimate eighteenth century free spirit, Robert Burns, whose romantic world is summoned up across the globe every year on Burns Night with words, music, haggis and dancing! Direct from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Linda Marlowe will present her critically acclaimed take on Dickens in Miss Havisham s Expectations and Bob Kingdom will explore the life of the King who gave up everything for love in An Audience with The Duke of Windsor. The acclaimed physical theatre company Idle Motion create the magical images of surrealist writer Jorge Luis Borges in Borges and I. In music Elin Manahan- Thomas will sing some of Purcell s most beautiful arias from The Fairy Queen in Banish Sorrow, Banish Care, and our young singers perform Rossini s ravishing Petite Messe Solennelle. We welcome a true free spirit of the present, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of The Queen s Music who will explore the complexities of writing an aria prior to Music Theatre Wales performance of his classic, Eight Songs for A Mad King. She was also strikingly beautiful, receiving some 15 proposals of marriage before she was 21. However, her marriage to the pioneering psychoanalyst Ernest Jones, turned out to be brief and tragic. What happened has never been fully explained A talented cast of musicians, dancers and actors led by soprano Gail Pearson who will perform many of Morfydd Owen s best known songs. Wed 13 March 8pm Borges and I Presented by Idle Motion in association with The New Diorama Theatre and Greenwich Theatre Fringe Sell-Out Idle Motion return with their Total Theatre Award nominated show Borges and I. This stunning piece of visual theatre explores the life of writer Jorge Luis Borges, who questioned and translated the world around him. Through the use of multimedia and his evocative stories, Idle Motion bring forth images of labyrinths, tigers and a universe of libraries. The small mixed ensemble that Schoenberg invented for this masterpiece of early atonal music has, over the last 100 years, become a standard ensemble for subsequent composers, spawning a large repertoire for this grouping of instruments. National Medal of Arts recipient and most frequently performed American choral composer, Lauridsen has been described as the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic. This compelling film won Best Documentary at the 2012 DC Independent Film Festival and was reviewed by the Wall Street Journal as a heartening rarity. A mix of their original material, well known songs from the jazz, latin and popular repertoires as well as contemporary classical music and literary works from Britten through to Raymond Carver. The project shows a wide range of influences from Kenny Wheeler, Chico Buarque and Paul Bley. Babelfish features internationally renowned musicians Chris Laurence on Bass and Paul Clarvis on percussion. The harp occupies a vital place in the incredibly rich cultures of both Senegal and Wales. The West African harp the kora played by Seckou is made from a dried gourd and fishing line; the Welsh harp, played by Catrin, is one of the most iconic symbols of a nation steeped in music. Remarkably, both nations share a centuriesold bardic tradition of intricate oral history, expressed through music, song and verse. The band s release, Sensible Shoes was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize and described as a modern classic by the press: a handsdown triumph said The Independent, a gale of fresh air wrote The Guardian and the group were described as the band bringing jazz back to contemporary music s cutting edge by The Sun. Led Bib continue to appeal to all fans of good music it s the reason that drum and bass heads, jazz aficionados and folk and pop fans are dotted across their audiences. That s how Aram Khachaturian saw his Violin Concerto - and in the violinist Máté Rácz, a brilliant soloist is exactly what we ve got! Our Symphony Orchestra are his sparring partners today, and while the competition may be friendly, expect passionate tunes and finger-twisting pyrotechnics in the 20th century s most flamboyant violin concerto. Debussy s famous Prélude begins the concert in an altogether more sensuous mood. Scored for four soloists and chorus, with harmonium and piano accompaniment, the work s title is misleading, since the Petite Messe Solennelle is neither petite nor particularly solemn! It is unmistakeably operatic in style; the music ranges from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits, and abounds in the memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini became justly famous. Shakespeare s narrative poem gave Britten the inspiration for an electrifying chamber opera narrated by a male and female chorus. As Rome sinks into depravity, all the city s women appear to be unfaithful with the exception of Lucretia, wife of Collatinus. Prince Tarquinius doubts Lucretia s fidelity and decides to put her chastity to the test with tragic consequences. Tues 26 March 8pm Music Theatre Wales: Eight Songs for a Mad King More than 20 years before the film and play The Madness of George III caught the public s imagination, composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies immortalised the monarch s descent into dementia and delusion in Eight Songs for a Mad King - a classic piece of music theatre and a disturbing and poignant portrayal of madness. Welsh baritone Kelvin Thomas reprises the virtuoso lead role that he has made his own in productions across the world. Eight Songs is performed alongside Vasco Mendonça s compelling new setting of Samuel Beckett s monologue Ping. Combining live performance with digital sound and video scenography, this is a work at the cutting edge of contemporary European music theatre. Parking Parking spaces at the college are restricted to disabled badge holders only. These spaces are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. These spaces cannot be reserved. There is a pay and display car park immediately next to the college (free after 6pm). There is also further parking a short walk away at the civic centre opposite the college (free after 6pm). Please note RWCMD has no authority over these car parks. Latecomers During some performances latecomers will not be admitted. You may be asked to wait for a suitable break in the performance before taking your seats. This will be at the Duty Manager s discretion. Accessible Facilities All of our performance spaces are accessible by wheelchair. For College promotions wheelchair users will be charged the concessionary price and 1 complimentary ticket will be given (if required) to a companion. Other rates may apply to non College productions. Hearing Induction Loops are available from the Box Office. Customers will be required to pay a 5 deposit refundable upon return. Please note: It is advisable that you inform Box Office at time of booking if you or any of your party have any special needs. Baby changing facilities are available. Guide dogs are welcome. Brochure Formats Event information is available in large print format, audio format or as a pdf file. Unreserved and Reserved Seating Both the Richard Burton Theatre and the Dora Stoutzker Hall operate a reserved seating policy. All other performance spaces have unreserved seating. Should this differ for any performance you will be informed at the time of booking. Mobile Phones and Recordings Please turn off mobile phones and other noise makingdevices when attending performances. The use of all photographic and/or video equipment is strictly prohibited. Accommodation Park Plaza Cardiff is our preferred hotel and is in walking distance of the College. Ticket buyers are entitled to a discounted rate. Please ask the Box Office for details. Lunchtime Concerts Ticket Pricing You may have noticed that we have adjusted our ticket pricing on Lunchtime Concerts? This is designed to encourage you to book your ticket in advance and reduce queuing at the Box Office on the day of the concert. If you have any queries please don t hesitate to ask a member of the Box Office team. Gift Vouchers Everybody enjoys a great night out, which makes our Gift Vouchers the perfect present for family and friends. Available from the Box Office.
