4 1. Company NUMERIK JENA develops, produces and distributes linear and rotary encoders of the highest resolution and precision worldwide. Our products set benchmarks and do not only impress with their particularly small dimensions. Due to their versatility they are universally applicable. The outstanding features of our sensor modules allow their integration into nearly every high-tech application. Customization is our core competency. We draw on over 30 years of experience in development, manufacturing and sale of position encoders. The roots of production metrology and its associated technology for the manufacturing of precision scales go back to Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe. NUMERIK JENA measuring systems are basically characterized by the following main features: High resolution for precise dynamics of drives and customizable encoder designs Easy integration due to compact size and customer friendly mounting tolerances Smooth movement and high reliability due to stable signal quality Integrated online compensation of the counting signals High accuracy for accurate repeatable positioning High traversing speed for efficient motion control High acceleration due to low mass

8 2.3 Functional Principle Optoelectronic Scanning The core of all incremental optoelectronic encoders from NUMERIK JENA is the EPIFLEX measuring module - a compact, miniaturized and multifunctional component. It is based on a scanning principle for reflected light and a generation of integration design technology using the latest and most powerful microelectronic developments. The scanning principle utilizes the diffraction of light in a triple-grating system. The light source is a LED chip with diffused radiation. Its light impinges an index grating and will be reflected by the scale. This reflected light again impinges the index grating and will be detected by a photodiode array. The index grating differs in its period from the scale grating and is slightly rotated with respect to it. When the gratings move with respect to each other, the angular offset between the gratings produces moiré fringes that move perpendicularly to the measuring direction over the photodiode array. The receiver fields in the photodiode array are arranged geometrically to generate phase-shifted signals when they detect the moiré fringes. LED + Optical Sensors Electronic Components Optical Element Ray Path Flex Cable Output Graduation Index Grating Substrate (Scale Tape) The form and arrangement of photoelectric transducer fields (distribution of one channel into two or more) largely compensate pitch and planar misalignment of the measuring head with respect to the scale. Furthermore, they provide good harmonic filtering of the measuring signals to guarantee their quality and permit high interpolation factors. The signals are processed in the measuring module by an ASIC with the following functions: Amplification of the photodiode signals in three channels Adjustment of signal amplitude, balance and offset Output of sensor signals as voltage, current or square-wave signals Line drivers for up to 100 meter cable length for voltage signals Input signal level monitoring with generation of a fault detection signal Stabilization of the LED current Compensation of LED temperature variation

9 2.4 Scale Tapes The component responsible for the accuracy of a linear encoder is its measuring standard. The measuring standard for NUMERIK JENA linear encoders is a graduated scale on a steel tape. The graduation is etched into the polished steel surface, which makes it resistant to wiping and abrasion. Depending on the requirements of the application, exposed linear encoders are available with our SINGLEFLEX or DOUBLEFLEX scales. Our standard scale tapes are made of stainless steel, but different types of glass are also available on request. SINGLEFLEX The SINGLEFLEX scale tape consists of a single steel tape with an applied incremental track, one or more reference marks or an absolute track. The scale tape is equipped with a double-sided adhesive tape and can be mounted easily on the machine element. Scale Tape with Graduation Double-Sided Adhesive Tape PRODUCTS Machine Element Width Scale Tape = 8.00 mm Thickness Scale Tape = 0.25 mm Thickness Adhesive Tape = 0.20 mm DOUBLEFLEX The DOUBLEFLEX scale tape consists of two superimposed steel tapes. Both of them are divided by a tension uncoupled sheen of oil, which ensures the adhesion between the steel tapes. The incremental track with one or more reference marks or an absolute track is applied on the upper steel tape. The lower steel tape is equipped with a double-sided adhesive tape and can be mounted easily on the machine element. The two steel tapes are uncoupled mechanically. This ensures that the upper steel tape can expand independently of the lower steel tape due to thermal variations of the ambient temperature. By reference of the ambient temperature and the expansion coefficient of the steel tape it is possible to determine occurring length deviation of the increments. This allows to compensate the deviation of the measurement results. Please note: The DOUBLEFLEX scale tape is not suitable for vacuum applications! Fixed Point Scale Tape with Graduation Very Thin Adhesive Layer Machine Element Double-Sided Adhesive Tape Width Scale Tape = 8.00 mm Thickness Scale Tape = 0.50 mm Thickness Adhesive Tape = 0.20 mm SIMPLY PRECISE

10 2.5 Grating Disks The grating disks from NUMERIK JENA are available in different sizes and versions. Therefore, we offer a big selection of grating disks, but on request we also manufacture at customer s option. Our disks are suitable for vacuum applications. Our standard disks are made of aluminum, but different types of glass are also available on request. Reference Mark (Index) Incremental Track The grating disks can be glued to a hub with adhesive. We offer to do this highly precise manufacturing step as a service. We are also able to manufacture customer specific hubs. Every glued disk will be adjusted and measured. We deliver an additional accuracy chart if requested.

28 5. Accessory 5.1 ADJUSTMENT TOOL & EPIFLEX Software The measuring systems supplied by NUMERIK JENA are tested and adjusted under ideal mounting conditions. The sensor modules offer the possibility of an electronic adjustment. That way it is possible to adapt the encoder optimally to the customers surroundings after it has been mounted. Functions of the EPIFLEX Software: Programming of incremental sensor modules from NUMERIK JENA Automatic adjustment function Representation of the sinusoidal counting signals with amplitude, offset and phase position Representation of the position and width of the reference signal Evaluation of the mechanical mounting conditions Electronic readjustment of the amplitude and offset of the sensor signals Adjustment of the position and width of the reference signal Hardware + Software ACCESSORY

29 5.2 ABSOFLEX Software The absolute encoders from NUMERIK JENA provide a USB 2.0 interface which alows the user to connect it to a PC and use the ABSOFLEX software. The ABSOFLEX USB-Adapter allows to connect the encoders D-Sub connector directly to a PC.* Functions of the ABSOFLEX Software: Programming of absolute sensor modules from NUMERIK JENA Evaluation of the signal quality (absolute and incremental track) Evaluation of the mechanical mounting conditions Diagnostics of internal read head signal via system margins Automatic adjustment of the signals to reduce the effects of static mounting errors Programming of the sensor module (zero position and counting direction) Retrieval of position information (position indicator) Diagnostics and monitoring Hardware + Software ACCESSORY * Not in combination with EnDat 2.2 SIMPLY PRECISE

30 ACCESSORY QUICK GUIDE 5.3 QUICK GUIDE Mounting gadget for linear scales: Allows an easy assembly or exchange of the scale tape For scale tapes with accuracy class ±5 μm Maximum length: 2.0 m (others on request) Available for the following encoder models: LIA 2x, LIK xx, Kit Lx, LAK, Kit LA The QUICK GUIDE allows to mount the scale tape on the machine ground in a new way. The advantage is that the scale tape can expand due to thermal influences easily without the incurrence of tensions and it is possible to exchange the scale tape easily without any residues. + Mounting Tool The optional QUICK GUIDE mounting tool will be mounted in place of the read head and eases the mounting of the QUICK GUIDE mounting rail. Additionally a precise and to the guideway parallel running mounting of the rail will be ensured. Please note: the mounting conditions of the mounting tool can differ to the mounting conditions of the read head.
