The Art of Drama, The Art of Life PREFACE F irst of all I want to say thanks to the Almighty God for his blessing I can complete this book. I also want to thank the publisher, Graha Ilmu, in cooperation with Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha who publishes this book. My thank is also dedicated to the head of LP3 (Lembaga Pengembangan Pendidikan dan Pengajaran), Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Wijana, M.Si., and all the staffs. I also want to thank the head of English Education Department, the students of Drama classes and the colleagues in EED for any support and motivation. I wrote this book to be the handbook of Literature II (Drama Course) in order to give the basic knowledge on theatre. The content of this book, The Art of Drama the Art of Life, is about the general knowledge of theatre which covers introduction of the theatre, the elements of theatre, the theatre genres, dramatic structures, purpose and point of views, stages process and publication. I do hope that this book will be helpful for the students who take Drama course as one of the subject in the fifth semester. This book is born from the real experience, seven years of teaching and supervising students in Drama course. This book is also born due to rarely found Drama source in English. There are some sources are available, however, they are from western point of view. Hence, this book is very important and needed by our students especially the English Education Department students as their reference. Moreover, I do hope that it can be spread out nationally. I do realize that this book still needs to be improved. Therefore, any constructive criticsm and advice are highly respected for its development. Kadek Sonia Piscayanti

vi The Art of Drama, The Art of Life

1 INTRODUCTION In this part you will be introduced to drama, the basic concepts of drama, the elements of drama and subject of drama. H uman is a thinking being (homo sapiens). He/she is also theatre being (homo theatricus). Human does their role, does their life motivation based on theatrical concepts, which is they move on the stage (of life), being character, and maintain their life conflict. Based on understanding in which human is thinking being and theatrical being, thus human is always a subject who is inexhaustible excavated by theater artists in theatre performance. By movement, words and stage language, theatre is able to represent real or reflect real world. Because of that, one of effective language lesson can be done through drama performance. In English Education Department (EED) theatre subject appears in Semester Five. The fifth semester students are responsible to perform a script at the end of the semester. Theatre performance in English Education Department s subject is the peak of the learning process in the course of the drama. A theatre performance becomes a historical momentum for the one who become the main characters, director and whoever who are involved in it as a production team. They are able to do finish something which is hard and long, start from pre-production, production dan post production. Generally, they passed some production stages namely choosing the script, memorizing the script, casting the characters, preparing the staging concepts, deciding the production team, arranging exercise program, exercise, preparing properties, costume, artistic system, music system, lighting, pre rehearsal, rehearsal, performance until publication and documentation. Observing those phases, obviously drama performance is not an easy process. Drama is a part of life, everyday life. The art of drama, is the art of life. We, as human beings, play drama everyday based on our roles. We play role as a part of our own responsibilities, as consequences of what we are doing everyday. Roles of life for examples, as a father, mother, teacher, farmer, painter, singer, etc. Roles here mean our responsibility as a part of society, as a part

2 The Art of Drama, The Art of Life of a family and a part of individuals living in a particular system. We can not be apart from the society or the social system that forms us as an individual and social being. This is why, role is within us, controls us, influences us and reflects us as human beings. Therefore, as long as we live, we play role, we play drama. Drama is nothing but actions, the continuous actions in life. To understand drama as a part of life, we should be constantly aware that we are human being that plays a certain character. Character is a person, a subject, who has a specific characteristic. Character in real life, could also be seen as a role, that I have explained previously such as a father, a mother, a farmer, a teacher, and others. But to be a bit more specific, character is more exact than a role, it is completed with a direct and indirect characterization which makes a character unique and specific. Drama is a story about character which is performed on stage. A character runs the story through the scenes after scenes. The interpretation of characters depend on the purpose and point of view of the script. Here, the purpose and point of view define the quality of performance and the responses of the audience. All elements of drama work together at the performance. First, the audience. Why does audience take the first place of the elements? Because there is no performance without audience. The second element is purpose. All of drama performance has a purpose, like all forms of arts. The purposes are to educate, to entertain and to inspire. The third element is the point of view. Point of view relates with the approach of drama and the approach relates with the artistic vision of the director. Whether a play should be tragic, comic, or ironic. The fourth element is the director who decides the visions of the play, interprets the point of view of the play, and chooses the techniques used on the stage. He/she is the master mind of the play and becomes the one who holds the biggest responsibility of the success of the play. The fifth element is the performers. Without the performers, there will be no performance. In other words, the performers are the key of the performance. They transfer the meaning of the performance to the audience. They build a bridge between the stage and the audience. The last element is the stage. The stage is the place where the performance happens. It can be on the conventional stage, indoors or outdoors, or it can be in a created space or found space. The stage is the space that differentiates the on-stage acting and off-stage acting. On-stage acting is acting done on stage while off-stage acting is acting done in real life. Drama, is a part of everyday life. We can not live without drama, as drama can not live without people. The subject of drama is human being. The subject of human being is humanity and all its absurdity. Therefore, as long as human lives, drama will live forever. The subject of human beings can never be explored enough because it is limitless.
