Silicon PhotoMultiplier Kits Silicon PhotoMultipliers (SiPM) consist of a high density (up to ~ 10 3 /mm 2 ) matrix of photodiodes with a common output. Each diode is operated in a limited Geiger- Müller regime, in order to achieve gain at the level of 10 6. SiPM are sensitive to single photons and feature a genuine photon number resolving capability (even at room temperature), with a dynamic range at the level of a few hundreds photons/burst and with reasonable photon detection efficiency (PDE). Compactness, robustness, low cost, low operating voltage and power consumption represent the advantages over traditional photodetectors. CAEN offers two modular kits dedicated to these devices, targeted to education at undergraduate level and to resarchers new in the field or requiring an easy-to-use tool for comparing SiPM from different vendors. Evaluation Kit Educational Kit CAEN offers a modular development kit dedicated to Silicon Photomultipliers, representing the state-of-the-art in low light detection with photon number resolving capabilities. Evaluation Kit Both kits are shipped in a robust case ideal for a safe and easy transportation Educational Kit 79

SIPM Applications Sensor testing & characterization Using both the Evaluation and the Educational Kits it is possible to measure most of the basic detector figures (e.g. gain, photon number resolving power and dark count rate) with a set-up including the Ultrafast LED driver SP5601, the General Purpose Amplifier and Power Supply Unit (SP5600) and the Desktop Digitizer DT5720A running a dedicated Digital Pulse Processing firmware for Charge Integration (DPP CI). Set-up for SiPM testing & characterization Spectrum of the photons emitted by the LED Driver and detected by a SiPM at room temperature. Detecting Gamma Rays The Educational Kit includes a mini-spectrometer, ideal for gamma ray detection. The spectrometer s design allows an easy connection to the General Purpose Amplifier and Power Supply Unit (SP5600). The signal produced by a crystal coupled with a 3x3 mm 2 SiPM is amplified by the SP5600 and then digitized by the Desktop Digitizer. Different crystals can be mounted in the spectrometer. Set-up for detecting gamma rays Three different crystals are included in the kit (LYSO, BGO, CsI) to show how the different properties of these inorganic scintillators (Light Yield, Decay Time, Efficiency) affect the spectral response. 137 Cs spectrum obtained with a CsI crystal. The resolution on the 662 kev peak corresponds to a FWHM ~10% of the peak. 80 More Technical Specifications available on www.caen.it

Detecting Cosmic Rays and β particles SIPM The Educational Kit includes a polystirene plastic scintillating tile with a sensitive volume of 150 x 150 x 10 mm 3, with light collected by a WLS fiber and conveyed to two SiPMs mounted on the SP5600. The signals from the first amplification stage of the SP5600 are routed to the discrimination stage, providing through a coincidence logic the trigger and the gate for digitizing the SiPM output. The discrimination and the coincidence can be also performed inside the FPGA of the Digitizer. Set-up for detecting cosmic rays and β particles The coincidence scheme naturally enhance the discrimination power against the background rate, as illustrated in the figure, where the counting frequency vs. the discrimination value in the SP5600 is shown. In the reported measurements, the sensors were equalized in gain and the coincidence window for the reported measurements was 50 ns. Two channel coincidence rate versus discrimination threshold. The black data correspond to the random coincidence rate of the two sensors. LabView based control software (Windows only) The Educational Kit is intended for educational purposes. It allows students to perform several laboratory development tests (like gamma and beta spectroscopy) as a tool for SiPM detector development and education. In this kit you may find, in addition to the power supply and amplification unit, the digitizer and the LED driver, a minispectrometer with 3 different inorganic scintillators easily exchangeable for gamma spectrometry and a scintillating tile for beta spectroscopy and cosmic rays detection using the two channel coincidence capability of the provided electronics.
