Omgewingsnuus / Environmental news Two no-nonsense winter-flowering shrubs for our gardens Article written and supplied by Elise Buitendag The mint family (Lamiaceae) contains a large variety of aromatic plants, many of which are well-known to us - lavender, rosemary, mint, marjoram, basil, thyme, etc. One of our wild sages is Tetradenia riparia, used in traditional medicine as a cough remedy. This indigenous shrub grows naturally in various habitats and is inconspicuous until it makes its soft, misty statement in the dry winter veld. It is known as the misty plume bush, Iboza, wildesalie, gemmerbos. The sprays of tiny mauve flowers vary from bluish to pinkish, from light to dark. Tetradenia riparia (Iboza, wildesalie, Gemmerbos) Senecio is a large cosmopolitan genus with about 1250 species, of which about 300 occur in Southern Africa. They belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae). Senecio barbertonicus is indigenous to our area and is found especially on rocky outcrops. This much-branched shrub with narrow succulent leaves can be attractive throughout the year, but it s in winter that it turns into a mass of golden yellow. Another well-known Senecio is the canary creeper (kanarieklimop), S. tamoides, which is also a plus in our gardens. Senecio barbertonicus Both Tetradenia riparia and Senecio barbertonicus are sun-loving and need no extra watering. In fact, you can simply pick a branch, break it into several pieces, plant them in one small hole and forget about them. These shrubs need very little care. By trimming them once a year and planting the cuttings around the plants, they will give more branches and therefore more flowers. You are welcome to ask gardener Johannes for some pieces of the Senecio at number 2 Dill Street, on a Tuesday morning. If you plant them now they should already flower next winter. Gardens are not made by singing 'Oh, how beautiful' and sitting in the shade. Rudyard Kipling

Nuus van die inwoners / News from the residents Something to smile about / Iets om oor te giggel An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anaesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. "Yes, Dad, what is it?" "Don't be nervous, son, do your best, and just remember, if it doesn't go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife... " First you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper... it's worse when you forget to pull it down. As your best friend I'll always pick you up when you fall, after I finish laughing.
Nuus van die inwoners / News from the residents WE ALL GET OLD IN THE END... I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers... You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. I decided to stop calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation. The biggest lie I tell myself is... "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." I don't have grey hair, I have "wisdom highlights" - I'm just very wise. If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would've put them on my knees. Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators - we haven't met yet. Why do I have to press one for English when you're just going to transfer me to someone I can't understand anyway? Of course I talk to myself - sometimes I need expert advice. At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for. Actually I'm not complaining because I am a Senager (senior teenager). I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don t have a curfew. I have a driver s license and my own car. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant, and I don t have acne.
