2 Part 1: Reading Question 1 Tony is telling his story in Nepal. Read it carefully. Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it is difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle, but I didn t know much about the country so I asked a Nepalese guide, Kim Rai, to go with me. We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left the camp two hours later with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot, but Kim made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants backs to get a better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day. Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kim told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger s lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very frightened. We heard the tiger a second before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning; I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal s throat. It grabbed Kim s leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kim away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep. Answer these questions. 1- How long did Tony stay in Nepal? 2- Why did Tony ask Kim Rai to go with him?

Question 2 Read the message and choose A, B or C. Lee, 14, London There are different groups of people everywhere today. There are people who like skating, people who like music, and people who like reading and lots more. Everybody, even the younger kids, wants to have an identity. You can tell what somebody is interested in just by looking at them; maybe they are wearing sports clothes with the name of a team on them or maybe their hair is styled in a particular way. There are lots of ways to recognize a person s identity. The strange thing is, when you get to school, their identity disappears. Everyone has the same uniform, your hair must be tidy and in girls schools they can t wear make-up or jewellery. I think this is really unfair. Every person has the right to express their identity and school uniform stops them from doing this.
