Welcome Dear NMS members and friends, Welcome to the Nassau Music Society s 2017-2018 concert season, featuring an exciting and diverse range of concerts. As always, we are committed to our mission of showcasing world-class international artists, offering free master classes to local musicians, and providing scholarships to young Bahamians pursuing careers in music. We thank our generous sponsors and dedicated committee members who have been instrumental in making this season come alive. This year we are thrilled to announce partnerships with the Current at Bahamar and the Lyford Cay International School. This will offer our audiences an array of listening and learning experiences in diverse venues, and both classical and jazz programming, all encouraging The Bahamas young and rising musical stars. We sincerely appreciate your patronage and encourage you to become a member and season ticket subscriber. Discounted ticket rates, early ticket purchase options, and other subscriber perks will be listed on our website. We hope you enjoy the musical offerings of this season and support our sponsors and partners. -Christine Gangelhoff, Acting Artistic Director 1

Featured Artists Juan Pérez Floristán The Nassau Music Society is delighted to present Juan Pérez Floristán, winner of the prestigious Santander International Piano Competition and a leader among the new generations of Spanish and European musicians. Mr. Floristán will open our season and regale audiences with a programme to include Rachmaninov and Beethoven. Duo Siqueira Lima Performing together since 2003 and hailed as one of the most prestigious chamber ensembles, Duo Siquiera Lima features Cecilia Noel Siqueira Franco & Fernando de Lima. This captivating guitar duo will present a diverse programme ranging from their classical repertoire to popular music of Latin America. 4

Featured Artists Rolf Haas & Miki Aoki The effortless virtuosity of violinist Rolf Haas will be featured in our February concerts. A musician of diverse interests and influences, he has often performed with visual artists and is also a respected hip-hop artist (emcee and producer). He will be accompanied by Miki Aoki, an accomplished pianist and collaborative artist. Ms. Aoki has combined a career of performing solo recitals and chamber music with working alongside young string players. Liam Teague March will be an exciting month as we partner with Lyford Cay International School to bring you the artistry of the extraordinary Liam Teague. Dubbed The Paganini of the Pan, Teague has an uncanny ability to convey the expressive and virtuosic capabilities of the steel pan. (continued next page) 5

Featured Artists He will work his magic with the LCIS student steel pan ensemble who will be featured in our concert at St Paul s. Mr. Teague will also collaborate with local jazz musicians for our concert at BahaMar. Not to be missed! Ayriel Trio Ambra Albek, Violin Simone Gramaglia, Viola Jamie Walton, Cello The Ayriel String Trio was founded in 2016 with the goal of exploring the unique and fascinating sonorities of the violin, viola and cello in a chamber setting. Ambra is well known to local audiences, and she and the Ayriel trio will undoubtedly delight us with their musical offerings. 6

Outreach What is a Masterclass? As part of our outreach mission, all of our featured artists will be offering free masterclasses to local students and music enthusiasts. A masterclass offers a rare opportunity for students to perform and receive critique from a master musician. Although time allows only three to four students to perform, audience members can gain knowledge and insider information by observing the artist at work. Masterclasses are free for NMS members to observe and we hope to showcase an outstanding master class participant at each of our concerts. Scholarships As an important part of its mission, since its inception 50 years ago The Nassau Music Society has provided scholarships to young Bahamians to further their musical careers. Many well-known musicians have been able to study abroad in part because of assistance received from the NMS. Ten years ago the NMS partnered with then College of the Bahamas, now University of the Bahamas, to make an annual award to a deserving music student. To date we are proud to have assisted a number of very promising Bahamian students including Shavincia Thomas, Eric Fowler, Jerrard Storr and Lynden Sands. The music community will have benefited by $80,000 when the scholarship programme is complete. Our present scholarship recipient is Anthony Dean, a very promising guitarist, whom we will showcase during this year s concert season. 7
