Revised 7/27/65 Accession Number 13 JOHN ZAREMBA COLLECTION The Labor History Archives received t h i s c o ll ec ti on from John Zaremba (1894-1963) in March, 1962. The papers cover a period from 1935-1961. The Zaremba Collection is particu larly important it its documentation of early efforts to organize the Dodge M a i n P l a nt in Hamtramck, Michigan. This includes minutes of the Dodge Main Works Council; material on the Automotive In du st ria l Workers' Association; minutes of Local 3, UAW; items on the 1937 s i t down and the 1939 lock out. Also in the collection is later material on Local 3 and the CIO. Several items deal with p o l i t i c s and c i v i l l i b e r t i e s in the late 1930's. Among the correspondents are: George Addes George Edwards Richard Frankensteen Edward J. Jeffries John L. Lewis Homer Martin Phillip Murray Richard Reading Robert Travis R.J. Thomas John Zaremba was an organizer of the Automotive I n d u s t r i a l Workers' Association and of Dodge Local 3 of the UAW. He played an ac tive role in the s i t down strike of 1937. From 1936-1942 Mr. Zaremba served as the Recording Secretary of Local 3. In a d d i t i o n to his labor career, Mr. Zaremba was active p o l i t i c a l l y and in the field of civil 1iberties. Description of series in Zaremba Collection: Boxes Series 1-4 Minutes: Minutes of the Dodge Main Works Council (1935-1937), Local 3 Executive Board and Membership meetings (1936-1942), Detroit Di stric t Council of UAW (1937-1938) and Wayne County CIO Council. Arranged by creating agency. 4-5 Correspondence: Arranged chronologically for the period 1932 to 1961. 6-9 Office F i l e; A w i d e variety of material on several subjects. Perhaps of most importance are the six folders on the 1937 sit down strike, including minutes of meetings conducted in the plant d u r i n g the s i t down. There are also six folders on the 1939 lock out by the Chrysler Corporation. I n c lu de d in Box 8 of t h i s series is Zaremba's copy of The Many and the Few by Henry Kraus. The book contains many notes by Zaremba in w h i c h he compares the Chrysler Sit-Down and the F l i n t Sit-Downs.
