In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Among his early awards as a jazz musician is a first prize from the Montreux jazz festival. Jenkins has composed extensively for advertising, including music for British Airways, Volvo, Delta Airlines, Pepsi, and numerous other major companies. His composition Palladio has been used in various forms for the wellknown De Beers diamond commercials. Alto Lucy Erwin Brown Andrea Corso Laura English Sarah Hendricks B. Elizabeth Herring Ellen Johnson Victoria Mitchell Andrea Pearson Nandani Persaud Brittany Scott The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace Bass Joseph Bryan Michael Goodroe Mike Kemokolam Dorell Singleton Harold Walbert Jenkins classical credits include a Requiem, a harp concerto (commissioned by HRH the Prince of Wales), a concertante, film scores, and other large and small works for various forces. His crossover group Adiemus has topped classical and pop charts around the world, gaining seventeen platinum or gold album awards. Karl Jenkins was commissioned by the Royal Armouries (England s oldest national museum) to compose a work for the millienium celebration. Guy Wilson, Master of the Armouries, selected texts from diverse literary sources and charged Jenkins to base the piece on the 15th century French song L homme armé (The Armed Man). Jenkins was to create a work that would reflect on the horrors of war that had dominated the past century, and to anticipate a peaceful future. The tragedy of Kosovo was unfolding as Jenkins composed the work, which led to its dedication to the victims of Kosovo. The work had its world premiere at London s Royal Albert Hall in 2000. In setting the medieval tune L homme armé for the first and last movements, Jenkins becomes the latest in a long list of composers to employ this popular medieval tune that was used as the cantus firmus for over 40 mass settings from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and by numerous composers since the 1920s. In the interior movements, Jenkins masterfully crafts a journey of transition. Utilizing styles from

renaissance motet to modern film scoring to anthems with contemporary harmonic language, the composer conveys his message of the horrors of war, the aftermath of destruction, and the hope of reconciliation and peace. The listener hears the marching feet of the soldiers, the trumpets call to the battle, the horrible screams of the fallen, and the Last Post (a British version of Taps). The poems that follow are eerily reminiscent of Benjamin Britten s War Requiem, both for their resemblance to Wilfred Owen s World War I era poetry used in that masterpiece, and for the way both composers managed to meld contemporary English text with the traditional Latin text from the Roman Catholic mass. The text of Jenkins work is even more varied, including the French title song, traditional Latin text from the Catholic liturgy, an Islamic prayer chant, Psalm texts in English, and English secular texts by Rudyard Kipling, John Dryden, Jonathan Swift, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. There are also English translations of poetry by Toge Sankichi (an A Bomb survivor who later died of leukemia from the radiation) and from the Mahàbharàta, an epic Sanskrit text of immense religious and philosophical importance to Hinduism. The multicultural nature of the text is amplified through the use of colorful orchestration and extensive use of percussion that is equally diverse, ranging from the Brazilian surdo to the trap set. The result is a stunning new work that has already received over 100 performances in the United Kingdom, and numerous performances in Canada, Australia, and parts of the United States. We are pleased to present the premiere performance of this work in the southeastern United States. Ring out the thousand wars of old Ring in the thousand years of peace Alfred Lord Tennyson This program is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriation of the Georgia General Assembly. Dr. Hibbard is also a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Chorus America, College Music Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinphonia, and Pi Kappa Lambda. He was recognized as a ʺFriend of the Artsʺ by Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity for women. This program is supported with appropriations from the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and the DeKalb Council for the Arts. This performance is being recorded by Dragma Productions, Marietta, Ga.

Hymn Before Action The earth is full of anger, The seas are dark with wrath, The Nations in their harness Go up against our path; Ere yet we loose the legions Ere yet we draw the blade, Jehovah of the thunders, Lord God of Battles, aid! Charge! The trumpet s loud clangor Excites us to Arms With shrill notes of Anger And mortal Alarms John Dryden How blest is he who for his country dies Jonathan Swift The double double beat Of the thundering drum Cries, Hark! the Foes come; Charge, Charge, tis too late to retreat John Dryden Angry Flames Pushing up through smoke From a world half darkened By overhanging cloud The shroud that mushroomed out And struck the dome of the sky Black, Red, Blue Dance in the air, Merge, Scatter glittering sparks, Already tower Over the whole city. High lust and froward bearing, Proud heart, rebellious brow Dead ear and soul uncaring, We see Thy mercy now! The sinner that forswore Thee, The fool that passed Thee by, Our times are known before Thee Lord grant us strength to die! Rudyard Kipling Quivering like seaweed, the mass of flames spurts forward. Popping up in the dense smoke, Crawling out Wreathed in fire: Countless human beings On all fours. In a heap of embers that erupt and subside, Hair rent, Rigid in death, There smoulders a curse Toge Sankichi Torches The animals scattered in all directions, screaming terrible screams. Many were burning, others were burnt. All were shattered and scattered mindlessly, their eyes bulging. Some hugged their sons, others their fathers and mothers, Unable to let them go, and so they died. Others leapt up in their thousands, faces disfigured And were consumed by the Fire. Everywhere were bodies Squirming on the ground, wings, eyes, and paws all burning. They breathed their last as living torches. The Mahàbhàrata Agnus Dei Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world, give us peace. Now the Guns Have Stopped Silent, So silent, now, Now the guns have stopped. I have survived all, I, who knew I would not. But now you are not here. I shall go home, alone; And must try to live life as before, And hide my grief For you, my dearest friend, Who should be with me now, Not cold, too soon, And in your grave, Alone. Guy Wilson
