THE CONDUCTORS Junior Honors String Orchestra Conductors MRS. JENNIFER VAN PETTEN, a graduate of the University of Maryland, has established herself as one of the premier music educators in the region. In 2005, Mrs. Van Petten was the recipient of the Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth as well as a finalist for the Agnes Meyer Teaching Award. Jennifer was a finalist in the 2010-2011 Gazette s My Favorite Teacher award. She is known for her charisma, enthusiasm, energy and attention to musical detail. Mrs. Van Petten has also served as the conductor of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra s Chamber Strings and Young Artists Orchestra. In 2013, Jennifer conducted the Southern Maryland s Tri-County Junior Honors Orchestra and the Anne Arundel County Junior Honors Orchestra. After an 11-year tenure as the Instrumental Music Director at Rosa Parks Middle School, Jennifer recently took leave to raise her three young children. While at Rosa Parks her bands and orchestras consistently earned superior ratings at both the county and state level. Additionally, the 2012 Rosa Parks Symphonic Band was featured at the Maryland Music Educators spring conference. Jennifer continues to inspire our region s young musicians serving as the Sinfonia conductor for the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestras and as the Montgomery County Junior Honors Orchestra conductor since 2011. As an active member of the Maryland Music Educators Association, Mrs. Van Petten has served in the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association as Member-at-Large and as an adjudicator for the District and State honors ensembles. She also frequently adjudicates regional band and orchestra festivals in Maryland. Jennifer maintains a private studio in Olney, where she resides with her family. MR. SCOTT HERMAN has been the Instrumental Music Director at Cabin John Middle School in Potomac, Maryland for 27 years. The music program has been featured at regional and state conferences, and has consistently attained superior ratings at district, state, and national adjudications. In 2012 Cabin John received Maryland s top honor by accepting the distinguished Exemplary Music Program award. In 2009, Mr. Herman was named as Maryland s Outstanding Music Teacher of the Year. The American String Teachers Association presented him with the Outstanding Service to Strings. Mr. Herman is in his third season as the Symphony Orchestra Conductor for the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestras. Prior to joining PVYO, he conducted the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) for 14 seasons. Mr. Herman has been involved with the MCPS honors program as either a coach or conductor for 25 years. He also frequently guest conducts and adjudicates throughout the region and is sought after by colleagues as a resource. Mr. Herman s private trumpet and string bass studio are also well represented in the all-county, all-state, and regional youth orchestras. As a performing artist, Mr. Herman is a member of the Capital Wind Symphony, as well as various chamber ensembles throughout the Washington D.C. metro region. Junior Honors Band Conductor MS. TERRY ALVEY is the Instrumental Music Director at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland. A graduate of St. Mary s College of Maryland, Ms. Alvey received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance and continued her graduate studies at the University of Maryland and Trinity College. She is an active music educator, conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and performer. During her teaching career with Montgomery County Public Schools, she also taught at Tilden, North Bethesda and Hoover Middle Schools. Under her leadership, these school bands and orchestras have consistently received superior ratings at both the District and State Band and Orchestra Festivals. Also under Ms. Alveys direction the Whitman Jazz Ensemble has placed first in both the prestigious Chantilly Jazz Festival and the High School Jazz Competition at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival. Ms. Alvey is currently conductor of the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble, and has served as conductor for the Maryland All-State Junior Band, Montgomery County Sixth Grade and Junior Honors Bands, as well as the Senior Honors String Orchestra. She has been a guest conductor throughout the area, including Charles, St. Mary s and Prince Georges Counties, and for the Pennsylvania Music Educator s Association. In addition to serving as an adjudicator for Band, Orchestra and Solo and Ensemble Festivals throughout Maryland, Ms. Alvey has been on the faculties of the Levine School of Music, University of Maryland Summer Youth Band Camp, DC Youth Orchestras, Montgomery County Youth Orchestras and the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra programs.

Ms. Alvey has played trumpet with the M Street Brass Quintet a Washington DC-based performing ensemble, for the last 26 years. Before joining M St, Ms. Alvey was a freelance musician and a member of the Monumental Brass Quintet, which performed at many venues on the East Coast, including the Kennedy Center, Lisner Auditorium, the Joseph Meyerhoff Hall and the White House. In addition to her current role at Whitman, Ms. Alvey maintains a private trumpet studio. MR. ROB DAHLIN is a graduate of Montgomery County Public Schools, graduating from Sherwood High School in 1987, then earning a Bachelor s degree in Music Education from James Madison University in 1991. After Graduating from James Madison, Mr. Dahlin came back to teach for Montgomery County Public Schools in 1992. In his tenure with MCPS, Mr. Dahlin has taught at Westland Middle School, Ridgeview Middle School, and is currently the instrumental music teacher at Herbert Hoover Middle School, where he teaches award winning string orchestras, concert bands, and a jazz band. Mr. Dahlin s students often earn superior ratings at local, state, and regional music festivals. His students consistently earn first place and best overall ensemble awards for each of his performing groups at Music in the Parks Festivals. Mr. Dahlin has been the conductor of the Montgomery County Jr. Honors Band three other times, in 2007, 2014, and 2015. During the past two years, nearly 1/3 of the MCPS Junior Honors Band have known Mr. Dahlin as their instrumental music teacher at Hoover Middle School. Mr. Dahlin is also a conductor for Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. While with PVYO Mr. Dahlin has conducted the Symphony Orchestra, and in 2014 Mr. Dahlin conducted the first PVYO Concert Band. Senior All-County String Orchestra Conductor MRS. BRIGITTE KIRCHHOFF has been working in the Montgomery County Public Schools for thirteen years. She has spent the past nine of them working at Quince Orchard High School, in Gaithersburg, MD as the Director of Orchestras. Prior to accepting the position at Quince Orchard in 2005, Mrs. Kirchhoff taught at Roberto Clemente Middle School for two years and was the conductor of the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra Preparatory Orchestra for four years. Mrs. Kirchhoff holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Master of Education in Human Development, both from the University of Maryland at College Park. Mrs. Kirchhoff attended the University of Maryland on the Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship. While attending the University of Maryland, Mrs. Kirchhoff was President of the University of Maryland s student chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). While at Quince Orchard, Mrs. Kirchhoff has helped build the music program to over four hundred students. Quince Orchard ensembles consistently receive superior ratings at district and state festival. From 2008-2010 she served as the Elected Faculty Representative on Quince Orchard s Leadership team. From 2010-2011, Mrs. Kirchhoff represented Montgomery County Music Teachers by serving on the Councils of Teaching and Learning (CTL) as well as spearheaded several committees to support music education efforts in MCPS. In 2008, Mrs. Kirchhoff received the honor of conducting the MCPS Junior All-County Honors Orchestra. Mrs. Kirchhoff remains an active member of the National Association for Music Education, Maryland Music Educators Association and the Maryland State Teachers Association. In her free time, Mrs. Kirchhoff enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee, training for half marathons and trying to keep up with her two sons, Andrew and Matthew. Senior Honors Band Preparation Conductor MR. MARK EISENHOWER is a graduate of Col. Zadok Magruder High School and has been the instrumental music teacher there since 1985. The Magruder bands and orchestras regularly earn Superior ratings at district and state festivals. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado and taught for three years in Mitchell, Nebraska before returning to Montgomery County. An active bass trombonist, Mr. Eisenhower has performed with the Capitol Wind Symphony, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, and the Maryland Band Director s Band. Mr. Eisenhower has conducted several Montgomery County Public Schools honors ensembles, serving as the conductor of the junior honor band in 1991 and the senior band in 1992. For the past several years he has prepared the senior honor band for notable guest conductors such as: Anthony Maiello, Eliott Del Borgo, Robert Cameron, Harlan Parker, Col. Arnold Gabriel, Emily Threinen, and John Lynch. In 2004 he conducted the Anne Arrundel County Mid-Level

THE CONDUCTORS Honor Band. In 2010 he conducted the Calvert County Honor Band. For fourteen years he was the manager of the Maryland Senior All State Band, and in 2001 Mr. Eisenhower had the honor of conducting the Maryland Junior All State Band. MR. KEVIN ROUSE is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in music education. As a bass trombonist, he studied under Matthew Guilford, the bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Rouse is currently the instrumental music director at Thomas S. Wootton High School. Previously, he was the director at Northwest High School from 2006 2014. His bands and orchestras have received consistent excellent and superior ratings at county and state festival. Mr. Rouse s marching bands, symphonic bands and orchestras have also received multiple awards in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. He also enjoys composing and arranging for his own marching band and other schools in the area. Mr. Rouse is honored to work with the talented students in the MCPS Senior Honors Band. Senior Honors Band Guest Conductor DR. CHRISTOPHER M. CICCONI is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Education at Towson University. Conductor of the Towson University Symphonic Band, he also teaches courses in conducting, methods of teaching instrumental music in secondary education, and brass methods. Prior to his arrival in Maryland, Cicconi earned a Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Miami, where he was awarded a Henry Mancini Fellowship. Previously, Dr. Cicconi served as Director of Bands at Pine Crest School (Fort Lauderdale, FL), Power Ranch Elementary and Middle School (Higley, AZ), and Payne Junior High School (Chandler, AZ). As an orchestra conductor, Cicconi has held positions and guest conducting appointments with orchestras in the United States, Argentina, and China. Most recently he served as associate conductor with the Broward Symphony Orchestra, the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, and the Walenstein Youth Symphony. Dr. Cicconi completed a Master of Music Education Degree, with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting, from Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree (summa cum laude) from Youngstown State University. He is a member of College Band Directors National Association, Florida Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, Pi Kappa Lambda, and an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma.
