greetings from the podium! Unbelievably, the 2015/16 season is my fourth as Music Director of the ETSO. The adage is true: time does fly when you re having fun! I am very proud of the programming we have in store for 2015/16. The challenge, as always, is to offer a broad range and styles of music while maintaining the high quality that East Texans have come to expect from their Orchestra. The season contains everything from the wide-ranging stylings and rambunctious energy of Time for Three to Brahms poignant German Requiem. It features a multi-media evening with Chaplin s famous film, City Lights, as well as local premieres of works by Prokofiev, Schumann and Beethoven. TWO soloists, plus the Organ Symphony of Saint-Saëns, will inaugurate the new orchestra shell on opening night! The astute and loyal ETSO patron will wonder about the lack of Brahms and Beethoven symphonies. There just wasn t any room to fit them in! I promise our exploration of these works will resume in 2017. It s a great season, with something for everyone. After all, we are YOUR Orchestra. See you at the Symphony! subscriber benefits Learn more about the music Noon Notes On the Friday before each concert from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, Richard Lee and the guest soloist share insights about the music being performed. Noon Notes is free and open to the public. For this special opening night concert, enjoy three masterworks certain to showcase the new acoustics. Internationally acclaimed pianist Lucille Chung performs Prokofiev s rousing Piano Concerto No. 1. Desmond Hoebig, former principal cello of the Cleveland, Houston, and Cincinnati symphonies, is featured in Schumann s beautiful Cello Concerto. The concert concludes with Saint- Saëns epic Symphony No. 3, the Organ Symphony. Come hear the ETSO as you ve never heard them before! "(Chung)...stylish and refined performances." City Lights A Multi-Media Experience November 14, 2015-7:30 PM Knockout concert January 30, 2016-7:30 pm 2 Chaplin Film Set to Live Music Experience the movies as never before as the East Texas Symphony Orchestra presents one of Charlie Chaplin s best films, City Lights, with live orchestra! This classic has it all: comedy, pratfalls, drama, social commentary and pathos...not to mention Chaplin s remarkable physical gifts. Add to this the challenge of synchronizing the Orchestra s live performance of Chaplin s original score to this classic film, and you are in for a magical and unique evening. Music for City Lights Copyright Roy Export Company Establishment and Bourne Co. except "La Violetera" José Padilla 3 Time for Three is a group that happily defies any traditional genre classification. With an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship, the American trio performs music from Bach and Brahms to bluegrass, folk tunes, and mashups of hits by the Beatles, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and more. They have performed at Carnegie Hall, with numerous orchestras and collaborated with prominent artists from Branford Marsalis to pops singer-songwriter Joshua Radin. Their infectious personalities and dizzying virtuosity are featured on this performance in works from Vivaldi s The Four Seasons and the music of Bach to renditions of Eleanor Rigby, Danny Boy, the theme from Schindler s List, and Orange Blossom Special. Time for Three is one of a kind with their crowd thrilling, on the spot improvisations. This could very well be the performance of the season. Don t Miss Out! Time for Three Zachary De Pue, Violin Nicolas Kendall, Violin Ranaan Meyer, Bass Simply put, they re a knockout! Three benevolent monsters, monsters of ability and technique surely. But also conveyors of an infectious joy that I find both touching and moving. Sir Simon Rattle, Chief Conductor, Berlin Philharmonic But with their staggering technique and freewheeling genre-crossing, it s hard not to be swept up in the force of their contagious energy. National Public Radio A rare blend of spontaneity and precision. Wall Street Journal Demonstrating their ability to deeply connect with their audience in a most interactive way, they electrified a full-house crowd. Then violinist Elissa Lee, sister of ETSO Music Director Richard Lee, joins the Orchestra for Mendelssohn s popular and virtuoso Violin Concerto. The ETSO is joined by brass and wind students from UT Tyler for two orchestral favorites, Bach s Fantasia in G and Berlioz Rakoczy March. The evening concludes with Stravinsky s evocative Firebird Suite, adapted by the composer from his score for the famed ballet. Wagenseil: Trombone Concerto Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto Bach: Fantasia in G Berlioz: Rakoczy March Stravinsky: Firebird Suite Cylla von Tiedemann Join us at Liberty Hall in Downtown Tyler for special presentations throughout the season. The ETSOA@Liberty Hall series includes a variety of programs from jazz to classical to creative family programming. Tickets for ETSOA@Liberty Hall events are sold through the ETSO Offices, 903-526-3876, and online through ETSO.org. 5 Patrick Pan, Piano ETSO Chorus, Jim Broussard, Choral Conductor Sooah Park, Soprano Yoonsang Lee, Baritone raise your voices April 30, 2016-7:30 PM Beethoven: Choral Fantasy for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra Brahms: A German Requiem The season concludes with an evening of powerful music for chorus and orchestra. The performance opens with Beethoven s Choral Fantasy for piano, chorus and orchestra, featuring 2014 Juanita Miller Competition Grand Prize Winner Patrick Pan at the keyboard. The centerpiece of the evening is Brahms profound and moving German Requiem. Featuring a chorus comprised of some of the area s finest voices, this concert provides a grand finale to the season. The ETSO does not perform at these events. ETSOA and Education ETSOA offers educational opportunities throughout the season, from master classes with guest artists to the annual school concerts. In 2015-2016, ETSO continues its popular presentation of the Link Up program from Carnegie Hall. This year-long educational engagement provides classroom curriculum for preparation throughout the season, culminating in a participatory concert with the ETSO in Spring 2016. The Link Up program is open to public, private and home school groups in the East Texas area. For more details, contact the ETSO office at 903-526-3876 or email info@etso.org.
