Coffee Break Italian Season 1, Lesson 25 Lesson notes Introduction Benvenuti a Coffee Break Italian! These are the lesson notes for lesson 25 in our series. As usual, we ll list all the words and phrases covered in this lesson and provide some additional information linked to the Review episode. b Introductory Conversation Katie: Buongiorno a tutti. Benvenuti a Coffee Break Italian. Io sono Mark. Ciao a tutti. Sono Francesca. Buongiorno! Sono Katie. Katie: Katie: Allora, ragazze, come state? Io sto bene, grazie. E Katie, come stai? Anch io sto bene, grazie. E tu, Mark? Come stai? Oggi, ho un po mal di gola ma a parte quello, tutto bene. Molto bene. Poverino. Grazie. Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 1 of 18

Katie: Siamo pronti? Sì. Sì, pronti. Allora cominciamo. ragazze girls, ladies come state? how are you (plural)? anch io sto bene I m well too a parte quello apart from that poverino poor thing K Lesson notes In this lesson you will learn some of the phrases you will need to have a telephone conversation in Italian. Pronto? pronto hello Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 2 of 18

Pronto literally means ready. You will know this word already as Mark always asks at the beginning of the lesson siamo pronti? which means are we ready? Pronto changes to pronti in this case because it is referring to lots of people. If a woman were to say I m ready she would say sono pronta whereas a man would say sono pronto. When answering the phone however, the word pronto does not change; both men and women say pronto. mi chiamo Katie my name is Katie sono il signor Pentleton it s Mr Pentleton Note that to say Mr in Italian we need to include the definite article il before the word for Mr: il signor Pentleton. sono il signor Smith it s Mr Smith sono il signor Giovinetto it s Mr Giovinetto sono la signora Ferrari it s Mrs Ferrari To say Mrs we also need the definite article but this time as we re referring to a feminine word (signora) we need the appropriate word for the which is la. sono la signorina Ferrari it s Miss Ferrari Although the word signorina means miss, nowadays it is considered a little outdated and so it s not used very often. Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 3 of 18

sono Giuseppe I am Giuseppe In English we say it s + name when we say who s calling e.g it s Giuseppe, it s Mark but in Italian you need to say literally I am so you say sono + name. essere to be Conversation Valeria: Valeria: Valeria: Pronto. Buongiorno. Sono la signora Valeria Rossi. Buongiorno signora Rossi. Disturbo? No, non disturba affatto. Posso parlare con il signor Matteo Verdi per favore? Mi dispiace. Il signor Verdi non c è. sono la signora Valeria Rossi I am Mrs Valeria Rossi disturbo? am I disturbing you? disturbare to disturb Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 4 of 18

DISTURBARE I disturb You disturb He / She / It disturbs You (formal) disturb We disturb You (plural) disturb They disturb disturbo disturbi disturba disturbiamo disturbate disturbano no, non disturba affatto no, you are (formal) not disturbing at all posso parlare con il signor Matteo Verdi? can I speak to Mr Matteo Verdi? mi dispiace I m sorry non c è he s not here in questa città non c è una piscina in this town there is no swimming pool ci sono there are non è qui he is not here non è disponibile al momento he s not available at the moment Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 5 of 18

in questo momento at the moment Valeria: Valeria: Valeria: Valeria: Valeria: Pronto. Buongiorno. Sono la signora Valeria Rossi. Buongiorno signora Rossi. Disturbo? No, non disturba affatto. Posso parlare con il signor Matteo Verdi per favore? Mi dispiace. Il signor Verdi non c è. Vuole lasciare un messaggio? Sì, grazie. Gli può dire che ho chiamato e che richiamo domani? Sì, riferisco, perfetto. Grazie mille. Arrivederci. Arrivederla. volere to want vuole do you (formal) want? posso can I? Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 6 of 18

VOLERE I want You want He / She / It wants You (formal) want We want You (plural) want They want voglio vuoi vuole vogliamo volete vogliono voglio parlare con il signor Verdi I want to speak with Mr Verdi vorrei I would like lasciare to leave LASCIARE I leave You leave He / She / It leaves You (formal) leave We leave You (plural) leave They leave lascio lasci lascia lasciamo lasciate lasciano Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 7 of 18

vuole lasciare un messaggio? do you (formal) want to leave a message? dire to tell, to say può you can (formal) gli può dire che? can you (formal) tell him that? ho chiamato I have called, I called chiamare to call mi chiamo I am called (lit. I call myself) mi può consigliare? can you recommend me? può consigliarmi? can you recommend me? una buona domanda a good question può dirgli che? can you tell him that? You may remember that in a previous lesson we learned that there are two ways of structuring the question can you recommend me? You can either have the word for me at the beginning of the question: mi può consigliare? Or you can attach it to the end of the verb in the infinitive form: può consigliarmi? Here, you can apply the same rules. You can put the word for him / to him at the beginning: gli può dire? or at the Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 8 of 18

end: può dirgli? If you choose the second option, note that you need to drop the letter E at the end of dire before adding gli: dirgli. le può dire che ho chiamato? can you tell her that I ve called? può dirle che ho chiamato? can you tell her that I ve called? che richiamo domani that I ll call back tomorrow The verb here is in the present tense referring to a future situation. If you see the prefix ri- at the beginning of an Italian verb it will normally be referring to the idea of doing something again. Chiamo means I call, richiamo is I call back. Fare is to do, rifare is to redo or to do again. riferisco I ll pass it on, I ll tell him / her This word literally means I report and comes from the verb riferire (to report) but in this context it means I ll pass on the message. È un po difficile tutto questo di parlare per telefono, non è vero? No! Non pensi? È facile. Ma dai! è un po difficile it s a little difficult Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 9 of 18

tutto questo di all this about parlare per telefono speaking on the phone non è vero? isn t that right? non pensi? don t you think? è facile it s easy ma dai! come on! The word dai really means you give and comes from the verb dare but it is a common expression which is used to mean come on! w Caffè Culturale: transcript This Caffè Culturale is about opera. Questa settimana, parliamo di opera. The word opera in Italian actually means "work" but of course it's also the word that is used to refer to performances which tell stories through music and songs, attraverso musica e canzoni. Even if you are not an opera fan, you will probably have heard of La Bohème and Madame Butterfly which were both written by Giacomo Puccini and are, of course, performed in Italian. And definitely we can't talk about Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 10 of 18

Italian opera without mentioning Giuseppe Verdi, whose composed Nabucco, Rigoletto and Il Trovatore and many more. One very famous Italian tenor was Luciano Pavarotti who was well known for his rendition of Nessun Dorma which features in another of Puccini's operas called Turandot. Nessun Dorma translates into English as "None shall sleep" and you should recognise the word dorma from the verb dormire. Un altro tenore italiano molto famoso, another very famous Italian tenor is Andrea Bocelli. Bocelli recordings include both opera and popular music and one of his most popular songs is Con Te Partirò. I thought it would be a good idea to go through a few lines of the chorus of this song and translate them for you. Con te partirò with you I will leave paesi che non ho mai veduto e vissuto con te countries that I have never seen and lived with you Adesso sì li vivrò now, yes, I will live them Con te partirò, su navi per mari with you I will leave, on ships across seas Che io lo so no, no, non esistono più which I know, no longer exist Con te io li vivrò with you I will live them Coffee Break Italian, Season 1, Lesson 25 - Notes page 11 of 18
