2 TOPIC A GREEK TRAGEDY AND DRAMA FESTIVALS Question 3 Choose either Essay A or Essay B. Answer all three parts of the essay you have chosen. Write your essay on pages 18 to 23 of your Question Paper/Answer Book. Write the question number at the start of each part of your answer, eg 3(a)(i). EITHER Essay A 3 (a) (i) Describe what the Chorus do in Medea. 3 (a) (ii) Explain how Medea outwits Jason throughout the play. 3 (a) (iii) Jason was a wicked man. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer. OR Essay B 3 (b) (i) Describe the shape, stage and structure of an ancient Greek theatre. 3 (b) (ii) Explain how the Athenians worshipped Dionysus at the City Dionysia. 3 (b) (iii) The plays were the best part of the City Dionysia. Do you agree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer.

OR Essay B 9 (b) (i) Describe what Schliemann discovered when he excavated at Mycenae. 9 (b) (ii) Explain why some people think that Schliemann was a good archaeologist and others think that he was a bad one. 9 (b) (iii) Do you agree that archaeological evidence shows that the Mycenaeans were better soldiers than craftsmen? Give reasons for your answer.

OR Essay B 12 (b) (i) In what ways did a patron gain from having clients? 12 (b) (ii) Explain what advantages and disadvantages there were for a slave when he was given his freedom. 12 (b) (iii) How harsh do you think life was for a slave in Rome in the first century AD?
