INSERT YOUR TITLE HERE Your Name Here, Your Department Here ABSTRACT Insert your abstract here. Your abstract should not exceed 150 words. This document conforms to the style sheet configurations, so you can use it as a template. 1.0. INTRODUCTION This document describes the style guidelines and word processor settings for papers to be submitted to the Proceedings of the eleventh Purdue University Interdisciplinary Graduate Symposium 1. Your paper should be formatted with Microsoft Word (.doc). The maximum number of pages allowed is 8, including examples, references, and appendices. 2.0. PAGE SETUP AND DOCUMENT SETTINGS Set the parameters under the Page Setup command (File menu) as follows: Letter paper size, left and right margins as Normal Margins, 1 from left and right. 3.0. PARAGRAPH SETTINGS For the body of the paper, set the parameters under the Paragraph command (Format menu) as follows: 1.5 spacing, paragraph indent 0.5 inch. Leave an empty line between paragraphs. Use full justification for all paragraphs of running text, including endnotes and references. Use the paragraph settings when necessary to keep together lines or paragraphs that should appear on the same page. 4.0. CHARACTER SETTINGS 1 Please note that this document has been adapted from MIT s working papers guidelines. We have made modifications as appropriate to meet the requirement of the online nature of the proceedings from this symposium.

Except for the title and abstract, the entire paper should be written in 12-pt Times New Roman. If you are going to use phonetic symbols, use SIL Doulos IPA. 5.0. TITLE, AUTHOR(S), AND ABSTRACT The title of the paper should be at the top of the first page, in 14-pt characters, and all letters should be capitalized (do not use small caps). The alignment of the title should be left. Immediately below the title, enter the author s name and the author s department. The name and department should be separated by a comma, and they should be in 12-pt characters and in italics. The abstract should not exceed 150 words, and should include as few references as possible. The abstract should be in 12-pt characters, with 0.5 inch indentation from the left. Insert a 0.5 inch tab and restrict the abstract to a single paragraph. 6.0. SECTION HEADINGS 6.1. Heading Level Two 6.1.1. Heading level three Apply at most three levels of headings. Section 1.0. should be the introduction. The numbers should be as follows: Level-one headings should be followed by a dot, 0, and another dot; level-two and level-three headings are also followed by a dot. Place one space after the dot and then write the title. The Abstract, Notes, and Works Cited sections are not numbered. All headings (but not the title) should be in boldface. The characters of section (=first level) headings are all capitalized (do not use small caps). Second-level headings are identical to main headings, except that they use title capitalization (capitalize all but function words). Thirdlevel headings are like second-level headings, except that they use sentence capitalization (capitalize only the first word and the first word following a colon, as well as proper names). All headings should be marked Keep with next and Keep lines together in the Paragraph parameters (Format menu) so that they will not be stranded at the bottom of a page.

Skip a line before and after section (=first level) headings, but not after second or third level headings 7.0. HEADERS AND FOOTERS Under the Page Setup command (File menu), set the header and footer to exactly 0.5 inch. Insert your name in the left-hand header. Do not insert anything in the right-hand header (that is where page numbers will later appear). 8.0. NOTES Notes must be footnotes. 9.0. TABLES, FIGURES, AND EXAMPLES Tables and Figures are numbered independently from each other (e.g., Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, and Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3) and from examples. 9.1. Tables Tables should be centered. The title of your table should follow the table number. It should appear on top of your table and be aligned with the left side of the table. A colon should separate the table number from the table title. Use title capitalization (i.e., capitalize all but function words) for the table title. 9.2. Figures Figures should be centered. The title of figures should appear immediately below the figure. The title of the figure should follow the figure number. 9.3. Examples

The paragraph settings for examples are as follows: Skip a line before and after each example. The main example number is parenthesized, the sub-letter is followed by a period. The example number should be aligned with the left margin. Set a tab at 0.5 inch to add the sub-letter of your example. The start of the example (text) should be at 0.75 inch. The tab stop for the example should therefore be at 0.75 inch. If you wish to cite a source for an example, use the right tab at the right margin, and enclose the citation in parentheses, as illustrated below. Skip a line between each example. (1) a. Example 1 Gloss (if in a different language) Translation (if in a different language) b. Example 2 Gloss (if in a different language) Translation (if in a different language) (provide citation here) Notice how text following an example can be flush left if it is logically part of the same paragraph that preceded the example(s). For examples in endnotes, apply the endnote style defined in the previous section. 10.0. CITATIONS AND REFERENCES 10.1. Citations In-text and parenthetical citations should be used in accordance with either the MLA or the APA reference style. When in doubt, consult the MLA or the APA reference style manual. Choose only one reference style and use it consistently. 10.2. References The Works Cited section goes at the very end of the paper. References should follow either the MLA or the APA reference style. The paragraph settings differ from those of the body of the paper as follows: Keep Lines Together, Indent 0.5 in, First 0.5 in. Leave two lines empty

before the Works Cited heading. Do not skip a line after the heading and do not leave any blank space between references. Make sure your references are as complete, accurate, and up-todate as possible. Whichever reference style you decide to choose (MLA or APA), follow it consistently. 11.0. STYLE AND MISCELLANEOUS When citing linguistic material within running text, italicize it, comme ça like that. Italics are also used to indicate emphasis; do not use boldface for emphasis (in the text; it s fine in example sentences, to highlight a particular morpheme for example). Follow traditional publishers guidelines for the relative placement of quotation marks and other punctuation; in particular, periods and commas are placed within double quotation marks, outside of single quotes (which are used to set off special terms or glosses, as in the first sentence of this paragraph); colons and semicolons appear outside of both single and double quotes. Hyphens should be used between words, but em-dashes which are generated by option-shift-hyphen on a Mac without spaces on either side should be used to set off text. Make sure that expressions that contain a hyphen do not appear in separate lines. Use either a single space or two spaces following a period, but please do so consistently. Finally, punctuation should follow a close parenthesis if it is not its own sentence (like this one). (But punctuation appears inside a selfcontained parenthetical.) As the last operations before completing your paper, run it through the Spell Checker and then the Hyphenation function. Do not allow proper names of people to be broken by a hyphen.
