Roland Piano Digital 2010 Sales Manual New HP-Series HP305 HP302

Roland has finally developed the ideal piano "tone." The tone changes naturally, with no steps, from ppp to fff. And even when it decays, it does so with natural and subtle variations in tone. This is Roland's "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine." This is not an inorganic tone generated by a tone generator. It produces an organic and natural sound, and its infinite range of tone colors gives the player unlimited pianistic expression. The "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine" was born by bringing together V-Piano technology and 88-key stereo multi-sampling technology. With the "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine" at its core, the new HP series delivers further refinements to all of its functions from touch to design to digital functions. Now including the popular polished ebony finish. This is a strong line-up of products that we are confident in presenting to our customers as the ideal digital piano. 01

Superb tone SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine The "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine" which was born by bringing together V-Piano technology and 88-key stereo multi-sampling technology consists of 3 elements. 1 Seamless tone variations according to your touch. Conventional piano sound engines incorporate several different tones per key for different velocities and switch between different tones depending on touch. Acoustic pianos, however, respond to the player in a completely smooth and natural way, with no "steps." This natural expressivity was our goal in the development of the "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine." Through Roland's unique V-Piano technology, we have been able to achieve natural and seamless variations in tone like that of acoustic pianos. Conventional Sampling sound engine SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine Stepless variations in tone. volume volume p mp mf f ppp pp p mp mf f ff fff gentle Keyboard touch forceful gentle Keyboard touch forceful Piano Resonance reproduces the unique nuances of a grand piano. This feature reproduces the rich lingering tones and string resonances that are unique to grand pianos. The basic Piano Resonance feature is standard on all HP series models. In combination with the "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine," its allows performances that project an authentic presence like that of acoustic grand pianos. [Included in all HP series models] "Damper Resonance" reproduces the beautiful expansion of sound when the player depresses the damper pedal. "String Resonance" reproduces the ring and lingering tones that are created by the sympathetic vibrations of strings. "Key-off Resonance" reproduces that unique lingering tone that is produced when the finger releases the key, and even reproduces different resonance according to the speed of the release. [ only] "Open and close lid" lets you adjust the position of the virtual grand piano lid. "Damper Noise" reproduces the slight noise that is created when the dampers move away from the strings. "Cabinet Resonance" allows users to tune the resonance of the piano's body. You can also adjust the ring of the "Duplex Scale" which emphasizes the brightness in the mid to high ranges. 5

NEW HP-Series 2 Smooth and natural tone decay A characteristic of acoustic pianos is that, after you strike a key, not only its volume but its tone changes as it decays. However, conventional piano sound engines would let sounds at certain volumes decay with no change in the tone, leading to an unnatural response. The "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine" changes all this. With its use of V-Piano technology, it produces a natural decay in which its tone gradually changes as it decays, as it would on an acoustic piano. Volume Conventional piano sound engines No change in tone 3 Expressivity in every single key Time Volume SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine Natural change in tone Not only do grand piano strings have different gauges and lengths depending on their range, the number of strings used for each note and the sizes of hammers are different as well. In addition, there are differences in the way the soundboard, body, and other strings resonate depending on the pitch, and this creates the beautiful tone of an acoustic piano where each note has a unique quality. The HP series was one of the first digital pianos to feature 88-key stereo multi-sampling. Roland first sampled all 88 keys of a variety of world-class grand pianos. We then analyzed and synthesized these tones using Roland's state-of-the-art digital technology to develop a high-quality, very expressive piano sound. This is an important point for in-store demos! Illustration on how the tone changes Traditional sampling Because a basic sound is used by multiple keys, some keys share the same ring and decay. Its natural variations in tone gives the player the expressiveness of an acoustic piano. Time The HP series features 88-key stereo multi-sampling technology Just as in grand pianos, the ring and decay are different for each key. Let the customer experience the natural, seamless variations in tone from pianissimo to fortissimo, just as on an acoustic piano. Emphasize the point out that this allows students to acquire a natural expressiveness as they learn. Right where the sound is about to decay completely is where piano players hone their expressivity. The natural decay produced by the new HP series creates a beautiful tone that can only be achieved with the "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine." Superb tone Superb touch Superb design Superb technology comes with a dedicated demo mode. Please refer to the demos on pages 7 and 8. 6

Superb tone 1 The maximum polyphony is more than enough for the most expressive performance. 128-note maximum polyphony gives you confidence when playing complex pieces with dense pedaling or playing along with SMF accompaniments. The HP series pianos support your performances and lessons with power to spare. 2 The Piano Designer allows you to customize the characteristics of the piano to your liking. You can tune the resonance of the strings and even how much you want to open the lid, so that you are able to create your preferred tone. In, you can also fine tune the cabinet resonance, as well as remove the "virtual" lid. In-store demo procedures Use the demo feature to communicate the "Superb tone" only available from Roland. It has been designed so that each of the functions creates a somewhat more pronounced effect for the purpose of demonstrations. 1 Characteristics of the piano tone This demo allows you to demonstrate the "SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine's" 3 basic features. 88-key stereo multi-sampling Stepless variations in tone depending on touch. Tones change naturally as they gradually decay. Press the "Piano" button and it will produce tones one by one from low to high. Since the tones have been sampled one by one for each key, customers will be able to hear the subtle differences between each of these tones. Explain why this difference is important for expressiveness in piano performances. Press the "E. Piano" button to hear 3 notes, played one by one from gentle to forceful touches, which produces changes in volume as well as in tone color. Customers can hear how the tone color changes seamlessly and smoothly along with the volume. Press the "Strings" button to hear 3 notes, played one by one, and listen to the natural changes in tone as they decays. 2 The anatomy of a piano tone This demo allows you to demonstrate the various components that make up a piano tone. The sound of the hammer hitting the string. Press the "Piano" button to hear how the "piano sound" is created not only by the string's vibration but also in combination with the sound of the hammer hitting the string. Duplex Scale tone Press the "E. Piano" button to listen to the "Duplex Scale" effect. The ring when the key is released. Press the "Strings" button to listen to the "key off resonance" effect which is a subtle resonation that is produced when a key is released. The demonstrations are performed automatically in sequence. Press the "Piano" button to move on to the next. The demonstrations are performed automatically in sequence. Press the "E. NEW HP-Series 3 3 4 Grand Piano Presence II replicates the unique sound of a grand piano. The 4-speaker system combines full-range and high-range speakers arranged in a stereo configuration to replicate the unique aural "presence" of a grand piano. True to the sound you would hear from a grand piano's soundboard, high notes are heard from "above" the player and rich basses emanate from below, near the floor. This gives the player a sound with a natural presence just like that of a large grand piano. 4 Continuous detection pedals ensure subtle pedal expressions. All HP series models come with three pedals: damper, soft, and sostenuto. The damper and soft pedals, in particular, are capable of continuously detecting subtle differences in the amount the pedal is depressed. This supports a full range of subtle pedal expressions: for example, subtle changes in tone where the damper is barely touching the string; or variations in sustain when you depress the pedal gradually. Getting ready Damper pedal effects All effects on Press the "Twin-Piano" and "Function" button simultaneously to enter the demo mode. Press the "Piano" button to listen to a sound that includes all of the effects. By alternating between the "Piano" and "E. Piano" buttons, you will be able to hear how important a role resonance and damper noise play in creating a "tone that is true to grand pianos." String resonance String resonance on Press the "Piano Designer" button. This demo lets the customer listen to the resonance effect (the expansion of sound) and the subtle sound that is created when the damper pedal is depressed and the dampers all move off of the strings at once. All effects off Press the "E. Piano" button to listen to a sound with all effects turned off. Press the "Strings" button to hear only the ring component of the resonance. Press the up/down buttons to make your selection. The tone button flashes and navigates you through the steps. Press the "Other" button to hear only the damper noise. Press the "Strings" and "Other" button to see how the resonance and damper noise sound. Keep one key pressed down, and then play notes that correspond to the harmonics of the first note. You will hear the sound of the first note, which has already decayed, ring again. This tells you that this open string is vibrating sympathetically. String resonance off Sound with only the ring component of the resonance Damper noise HP305 Superb tone Superb touch Superb design Superb technology By alternating between the "Piano" and "E. Piano" buttons, you can hear the tone with and without the sympathetic vibration. Press the "Piano" button to listen to a tone with string resonance on. Press the "E. Piano" button to listen to a tone with string resonance off. 8

Superb touch 1 The PHA (Progressive Hammer Action) III keyboard improves expressiveness and repetition. The "PHA II" keyboard on the HP305 and HP302 offers superb touch response. This unique keyboard, developed by Roland, replicates the touch of a grand piano not by using springs (just as grand pianos do not), but instead reproduces this feel with the hammer's movement. It enables a broad range of expressions from pianissimo to fortissimo, and gives players the same feel as grand pianos, where the lower notes have a heavy feel and the higher tones feel lighter. The is equipped with the "PHA III" keyboard which represents an improvement over the "PHA II" keyboard with regard to expressiveness and repetition. It also faithfully reproduces differences in tone depending on accents and subtle differences in how the keyboard is played. This is a state-of-the-art piano keyboard that responds to the demands of the most advanced players. 2 The escapement mechanism reproduces the unique feel of grand piano keyboards. How the touch changes due to the escapement mechanism when the key is pressed down Weight at which the key is pressed PHA III / II Keyboard with Escapement Grand Pianos Depth to which the key is pressed Press a key down slowly and you will feel the resistance grow gradually and then become lighter. This unique clicking sensation, called escapement, is found on grand pianos. You can confidently recommend HP series pianos to customers who demand the most authentic keyboard touch. 9 3 The Ivory Feel keyboard. The more you play, the better it feels and the more your confidence grows. The and HP305 feature the "Ivory Feel keyboard," which has become popular among users because its feel improve the more you play. Using a specially developed material with moisture absorbing properties, the keys replicate the appearance, texture, and playing feel of the white ivory keys and black ebony keys which are used in the most expensive grand pianos. The white keys consist of a two-piece "surface over base material" construction just that of an acoustic piano. This helps reduce the noise of fingernails tapping the keys, and it also has a rich appearance. HP305

NEW HP-Series Some secrets of this keyboard's playability are hidden from view. A truly player-friendly keyboard is one that offers a consistent touch at the tip of the keys as well as toward the back of the keys. Performances that use both white and black keys often require you to play the white keys toward the back and not at their tips. With acoustic grand pianos, there is little difference in the weight of the keys whether you play near the tips or toward the back of the keys because the key's fulcrum is located towards the back. However, if the hidden portion of the key is too short, the principle of leverage causes the touch to be too heavy near the back of the keys. To achieve a touch that is as close to that of an acoustic grand piano as possible, Roland made the hidden section of the keys as long as possible to push the fulcrum farther back. As a result, we have achieved a natural touch that is very consistent regardless of where you hit the key. Key is too short Short Unnaturally heavy Fulcrum Natural touch Long Fulcrum The fundamental principle of acoustic pianos: It is not the key but the hammer that produces the sound. Natural touch Natural touch In acoustic pianos, the key activates a hammer, which in turn hits the string to produce sound. Roland remains faithful to this sequence for producing sound: keyboard hammer sound. Thanks to this, even when you play "fast" and "shallow," the hammer gains strong inertia and this in turn produces a solid tone that is true to acoustic pianos. The basis of how we develop pianos at Roland lies in the principle that it is not the movement of the keys that produce the sound, but the "passion" of the pianist that is articulated through his or her fingers. Flow of sound generation on PHA III and PHA II keyboards. Keyboard PHA III and PHA II keyboards produce sound using hammer movement Key is the optimum length Hammer Sound is produced Superb tone Superb touch Superb design Superb technology The hammer hits a sensor to produce a sound. 10

Superb design 1 A finish that has become popular for its elegant and luxurious appearance. Polished Ebony finish HP305 With its striking, mirror-like appearance, the "polished ebony finish" is available on and HP305. Recommend these models to customers who are looking for a contemporary yet elegant appearance. 2 3 The stylish, compact new design will complement both traditional and modern spaces. The cabinets have stylish lines that reflect classic elegance with a contemporary flair and space-saving design. The pedals have a traditional design where they spread out laterally, for a stylish and classic appearance. The HP-series will be equally at home in a living room, child s room, or teacher s studio. The classic position lets you conceal the control panel when you play. All HP-series models now feature Roland's unique "classic position," which lets you cover the control panel and screen by sliding the fallboard to a notch. You can concentrate just on the music, as if you were playing an acoustic piano. The edges of the fallboard are also now finished with the same color as the wood grain for an even more natural appearance. HP305 4 The large music rest and holder accommodate large music scores. HP305 and HP305 now feature convenient and stylish brass music holders to help you manage large music books. The and HP305 also boast an extra wide music rest to accommodate very large scores. On these models, you can also fold the music rest down when not in use, so that it blends in better with your furnishings. 11

HP-Series Control Panel HP305 / HP302 Roland is committed to developing products that are not only user-friendly, but environmentally friendly as well. The plastic parts that make up the PHA III and PHA II (Progressive Hammer Action III and II) keyboards are recyclable and the keyboard contains no lead components. This keyboard was designed with consideration for the environment and is very eco-friendly. By using lead-free solder in the assembly of its printed circuit boards, Roland also actively implements environmental measures in its product components as well as in its manufacturing processes. Tree-planting project in Indonesia The wood used to make our digital-piano cabinets is imported from Indonesia. In 2008, Roland designated a 100-hectare area for tree planting, where the company has been planting trees for environmental purposes. The area contains a mixture of protected forest and trees designated for digital-piano-cabinet production. This forestation project is expected to offset approximately 10,000 tons of CO2 over a period of 20 years.
