Kennesaw State University Orchestra Program The Kennesaw State University Symphony Orchestra began in the Fall of 2004 and in 2010 expanded to include the KSU Philharmonic. The symphony orchestra performs a wide variety of repertoire from all time periods and styles. Students in the orchestra are made up of music majors and non-music majors with an interest in orchestral repertoire and come from distinguished high school programs and honor ensembles across the region. In its short history the orchestra has already performed with a long list of prestigious guest artists, conductors, and composers. In 2009 the KSU Orchestra was invited to perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference and hosted and performed at the 2010 College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference. In January 2011, the KSU Orchestra completed a three-concert tour of Beijing and Xian, China. Recently the orchestra performed with the legendary rock band KANSAS and was the first University Orchestra performance of Peter Gabriel s New Blood. 2012-2013 included a guest appearance by Alan Baer, principal tuba of the New York Philharmonic and renowned composer David Lang. The 2013-2014 Season will feature a new Violin Concerto by composer Chen Yi and a performance with pianist, Jeremy Denk. Biographies Zachary Goad, composer Zachary Goad, cellist, began his orchestral career when he became a member of the Kennesaw State University orchestra in 2009. Since then, he has performed at Atlanta Symphony Hall, Spivey Hall, the Murray Arts Center, Morgan Hall at the Bailey Performance Center, the Cobb Energy Center with KANSAS, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, and the Xi an Concert Hall in Xi an, China. Apart from his time in a symphony orchestra, Mr. Goad is also a frequent performer of chamber music, and has performed numerous works for small ensembles at Kennesaw State University. He currently studies under cellist Charae Krueger and is pursuing a Bachelors in Cello Performance. While working for his degree, Mr. Goad has received masterclasses from the Ying and Pacifica string quartets, cellists Jesus Castro-Balbi, Alisa Weilerstein and Dr. Wesley Baldwin, and composer Thomas Benjamin. During the summer of 2009, Mr. Goad completed the KSU Summer Music Clinic, and is a scholarship recipient of the KSU Music Clinic Scholarship. He studied composition with Dr. Lawrence Sherr from 2011-2012, and has premiered three works since he began composing in 2008. He has attended improvisation classes with saxophonist Sam Skelton, and was a member of the composition studio under trombonist Eric Alexander for his 2008 season.

Aside from his performance career, Mr. Goad has served as an apprentice for Williams Gengakki Violins Inc. from 2007-2008, and is an avid lover of instrument making. While at Williams Gengakki Violins Inc., Mr. Goad spent his time learning about stringed instrument history and theory, instrument set-up, instrument sales and marketing, luthier history, wood properties, and violinmaking equipment technique. He is currently in pursuit of his luthier license and plans to open his own shop within the next decade. Mr. Goad began his cello studies with Julie Cutcliff at age 10. He took private lessons with Dr. Timothy Mooney from 2008-2009, and holds a sizeable body of students throughout the greater Metro-Atlanta area through his own studio and two other established music studios. When he is not composing or playing cello, Mr. Goad enjoys various hobbies, including coffee roasting, late-night chamber music jam sessions, and botany. Dirk Stanfield, flute Dirk Stanfield is a Flute Performance major at Kennesaw State University where he studies flute with Christina Smith. At Kennesaw, Dirk plays in several ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and various chamber groups. Originally from Amarillo, Texas, he completed course work at West Texas A&M University and studied flute with Sally Turk. While in school, he has performed in several master classes with Brad Garner, Tara Helen O Connor, and Keith Underwood. Recent performances include the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, recitals at Georgia State University, and a production of the opera, Die Zauberflöte with the Harrower Summer Workshop. Chani Maisonet, soprano Chani Maisonet is a senior Music Major with a concentration in Vocal Performance and has studied with various voice faculty members over the years. Since freshman year, she has been a part of the KSU opera theater and musical theater, starring in roles such as Hansel and Gretel, as Gretel, Iolanthe, as Phyllis, The Old Maid and The Thief, as Laetitia, and The Secret Garden, as Lily. She is also involved in many ensembles around campus: Chamber Choir, Gospel Choir, and Musical theater ensemble. For three consecutive years, Chani won the first place title in the NATS competition (National Association for teachers of singing) in her division. Recently, she was a featured soloist in the Peter Gabriel concert performed by the KSU orchestra. Chani is always thrilled to perform but now she is even more excited to be able to cap off the spring semester with her senior recital that will be given April 27th at eight o clock in Bailey Performance Center.

Jordan Alfredson, bassoon Jordan Alfredson is a junior at Kennesaw State University majoring in Music Performance. He has served as principal bassoon and contrabassoonist of the Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and participates in small ensemble performances. As a member of the KSU Orchestra, Jordan has performed alongside the band Kansas, and has traveled to China and performed at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. As a bassoon student of Laura Najarian of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, he has taken masterclasses with Carl Nitchie, also of the ASO, Peter Kolkay of Vanderbilt University, and Jeff Lyman of the University of Michigan. Mr. Marshall performed with Cause&Freedom at the Woodstock in Woodstock Music Festival in 2010, and from 2011 to 2012 played and recorded with numerous other bands throughout the Atlanta area. This February, he performed the Vivaldi Double Cello Concerto with his professor, Charae Krueger, and his former high school director, Carol Doemel of the Lassiter High School Orchestra. On April 22 of this year he will be performing the first Shostakovich Cello Concerto with the Kennesaw State Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition Winners and the KSU Symphony Orchestra. Having played a gamut of classical repertoire, Mr. Marshall also enjoys premiering contemporary works written by his fellow students at Kennesaw State University. In 2011, he showcased a work by Johnny Brown for the renowned 8th Blackbird ensemble, and in 2012 premiered the Zac Goad String Quartet No. 1. Katz Music and Entertainment Business Certificate. In the summer of 2004 and 2009 he served as Music Director for the Madison Savoyards Opera Company. He has also appeared as a guest conductor four times with the Summer Music Clinic Orchestra at the University of Wisconsin and with the 2003-2006 Maud-Powell Music Festival Orchestra in LaSalle, IL. In March 2010 he conducted the 11-12 Georgia All-State Orchestra and in the summer of 2011 was a guest conductor at the Highlands Music Festival. Under his leadership, the Georgia Symphony has presented critically acclaimed performances and has seen enormous growth. During his eight year tenure with the GSO, the group has added to its core of professional musicians, removed all of the debt it was under, expanded its budget, and created a comprehensive youth orchestra and chorus program with approximately 400 students from across the region. In the summer of 2003 Dr. Alexander completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in orchestral conducting. Prior to his current appointments, he has served on the faculties at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Ripon College. Dr. Alexander began the orchestra program at Kennesaw State University and under his direction the KSU Orchestra has performed at the 2009 Georgia Music Educators Association Annual In-Service, hosted and performed at the 2010 College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference, and completed a three concert tour of Beijing and Xian, China in January of 2011.
