New fr Musical Theater Divisins Auditin requirements fr the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER DIVISIONS at the Reginal and Natinal level differ slightly frm the Bstn Chapter requirements. Fr the NATS Natinal Auditins all students must sing all sngs in riginal key - regardless f age, and students must perfrm 3 r 4 sngs in mst divisins including Musical Theater Please cnsult http://www.nats.rg/natinal_student_auditins if yur student is als planning t participate at the Reginal r Natinal level. Fr NATS Bstn: In all Musical Theater Divisins sng chices must be frm STAGED Bradway r Off- Bradway Prductins. This eliminates any repertire that may have nly appeared in a "Cabaret" style setting, r any shws which have nt had a NYC Bradway r Off-Bradway run. Sme examples pieces that d nt meet the requirements are "Girl in 14G" by Jeanine Tesri r "Taylr the Latte By" by Heisler & Gldrich. *High Schl students may perfrm 2 r 3 sngs in the Musical Theater preliminary runds in rder t meet the 8-minute music requirement. *Teachers may alter keys fr students wh identify as transgender and students 15 and under All ther students must sing in riginal keys. *Students age 15 and under may alter the key f musical theater selectins t a majr third t accmmdate vice change issues while retaining the dramatic intentins and vcal characteristics f the character intended by the cmpser. *Students wh self-identify as transgender (either male r female nt bth) may alter the keys f musical theater selectins t accmmdate the gender f the characters and rles 3

with which they identify while remaining cnsistent with the dramatic intentins and vcal clr intended by the cmpser. * These Bstn Chapter exceptins t the Natinal regulatins are apprved by the NSA Crdinatr as a test case t gather data fr pssible changes in the Student Auditin Regulatins in the 2017/18 auditin year. Teachers may make cuts t Musical Theater selectins, within the guidelines f cmmn perfrmance practice. Pian intrductins, pian interludes, pian music after the vcal sl is cmpleted, and internal cuts f selectins are allwed as in cmmn perfrmance practice. Cuts f verse r verses f selectins are nt allwed. In the case f strphic pieces, all verses shuld remain that are traditinally included. In Musical Theater ONLY - Teachers r Students MUST submit their sng list fr repertire apprval by January 15, 2017 (Midnight) s that the chices can be checked and apprved by the Auditins team. This will eliminate any last-minute issues with meeting the NATS Natinal regulatins regarding repertire chices. Students and/r teachers can submit rep fr apprval ANY TIME. Adjudicatr Rubrics NATS Natinal has standardized the Adjudicatin Frms and Adjudicatin Rubrics that will be used fr all Chapters and Regins. The Natinal Bard has als prvided teachers with an Adjudicatr vide t help explain the new Rubrics. Tie Breakers There will n lnger be tie-breakers fr teachers t reslve in Preliminary r Semi-Final Runds. If there is a tie fr the tp three spts in each rm all tied scres will mve n t the next rund. If there are n ties at the Finalists Cncert (and 4 r mre students prceeded t the Finals) then awards will be given fr 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and Hnrable Mentin certificates. Hnrable mentin will nt receive any financial award. In the event f a tie in the final rund, all students will receive mnetary awards. DIVISIONS AND AGE REQUIREMENTS If any Divisin des nt meet the minimum f 5 participants, NATS-Bstn reserves the right t assign these singers t anther apprpriate categry, r ffer a refund if an apprpriate categry is nt available r is at capacity. Divisin 2 Divisin 3 Classical and Musical Theater Ages 18-22: Enrlled in an Undergraduate Prgram* Classical and Musical Theater PRELIMINARY ROUND HELD ONLINE (Feb. 15, 2017 deadline) Ages 22 and abve: Enrlled in a Graduate Prgram* Classical and Musical Theater PRELIMINARY ROUND HELD ONLINE (Feb. 15, 2017 deadline) Recreatinal Divisin: Ages 18 and abve, NOT enrlled in an Undergraduate r Graduate Prgram; NOT emplyed full-time r part-time as a singer. Classical and Musical Theater PRELIMINARY ROUND HELD ONLINE (Feb. 15, 2017 deadline) *Students in ANY majr enrlled in an undergraduate/graduate prgram will participate in Divisin 2 r 3 - nt the Recreatinal Divisin. The abve Divisins are specific t the Bstn Chapter Auditins and are nt exactly the same as the Reginal and Natinal Divisins due t the size f ur Chapter. If yu chse t send a student t auditin fr the Natinal NATS Student Auditins, please visit the Natinal web site t ensure that yu enrll in the crrect divisin and meet all the Natinal requirements. Singers must present PROOF OF AGE nline with their applicatin r when checking in n the day f the Student Auditins. Failure t bring prf f age will result in eliminatin frm the cmpetitin. Prf f age can be a passprt, driver s license, birth certificate r any gvernment issued dcumentatin with a birth date listed. Teachers may uplad a scanned cpy f the identificatin t the registratin website n later than midnight n February 15, 2017. The Auditin staff will nt accept sft/digital cpies f dcuments during the event. Singers wh cmpeted in the fall f 2015 are nt required t submit prf f age in 2017. Classical Music Repertire Requirements Divisin 1: Three cntrasting selectins frm classical repertire. One art sng in English (English must be the riginal language f the cmpsitin). One art sng in a freign language. One additinal art sng. It is strngly recmmended that peratic arias nt be ffered in Divisin 1. Singers will nt exceed 8 minutes f music. Judicius, but musical, cuts t pian intrs and clsings are acceptable. Fr the Preliminary Rund singers will perfrm ne sng f their chice and then sngs selected by the adjudicatrs within the time limits. Judges hpe t hear all sng chices, s please keep this in mind when planning music t keep within the time limits. Hwever, when time limit is reached the Judges will need t end the auditin. Fr the Semifinal Rund each student will sing ne selectin f his/her chice in its entirety. The selectin must be chsen frm the pieces submitted in the preliminary rund entry. In ther wrds, n music theater, pp, sul, jazz, rhythm and blues, etc. Flk sng arrangements are widely accepted as a part f the classical genre and wuld be acceptable and apprpriate auditin repertire fr students in classical divisins. Pian intrductins, pian interludes, pian music after the vcal sl is cmpleted, and internal cuts f pera arias as in cmmn perfrmance practice. Cuts f verse r verses f selectins are nt allwed. In the case f strphic pieces, all verses shuld remain that are traditinally included. All repertire must be frm staged Bradway and Off---Bradway prductins. The prductin may be a musical, revue, r sng cycle but MUST have been staged AND Bradway r Off---Bradway. Varius nline resurces are available t cnfirm such status and teachers are encuraged t cnfirm them when selecting repertire. Singers shuld ensure that cntrasting selectins represent the spectrum f their vcal and dramatic abilities. Fr example, this may be exhibited by selecting pieces f varying style perids (pp/rck, cntemprary, Glden Age) and emplying a variety f vcalism (belt, mix, legit). Singers submitting cmplete applicatins by the deadline, but after the limit has been reached will be placed n the Waitlist and will receive ntice by email if an auditin slt is available. These will be assigned n a first cme, first served basis. Waitlisted singers will receive a refund f the applicatin fee if they are nt scheduled fr an auditin.
