ROGRAM NOTES The traditional dance in Arica oten exresses the lie o the community The dance is characterized by the Arican olyrhythm but is closely connected ith the music and its simlest orm, the singing The rhythmic variety tyical o Arican music exresses itsel in the body that is able to erorm dierent sequences simultaneously The movements are comlex and oten executed on the sot Danza Aricana is an original comosition by Victor Lóez building on the musical concets o these dances NOTES TO THE CONDCTOR The oening statement is to be layed sloly and legato There are no slurs in this comosition and every note is to be layed long unless otherise indicated Make certain that the dynamics are olloed closely At rehearsal number 9, the ercussion introduces the rhythmic sequence that gives this iece its Arican lavor The bongos and concert toms should be tuned roerly Although tuning the bongos is largely a matter o ersonal reerence, it is suggested that the small drum be tuned high (do not over-tighten) and the large drum a ourth belo or this comosition, the layer may ant to use regular drumsticks or hard elt tis Exeriment ith the dierent sounds Additionally, hen available, Arican drums may be used to roduce a more authentic sound Hoever, the additional layers should not lay ad libitum and maintain the ritten rhythmic atterns or added lexibility, at times, the timani art has been cued in the tuba art At rehearsal number 13, the trumet and clarinets have the melody, hich is layed against the ersistent rhythmic attern At measure 21, the ercussion instruments should not overoer the ensemble or better sonority, make certain that the oen ith intervals in the lo brass and oodinds are in tune and that the staccatos are roerly articulated Measures 29 through 32 restate the initial melodic motive, but this time in the lo brass and oodinds At measures 35 and 36, make certain that the unison line is balanced and that everyone can hear the loest instrument in each section and ultimately in the ensemble The ercussion section should not lay measures 37 to 0 overly loud, but rather ith much intensity To acilitate the music rehearsal and establish a smooth transition beteen sections, take time to study and identiy here the reeat signs are located This comosition has been ritten ith the very young layer in mind and should be accessible or those students ho have had at least 3 or months o beginning band exerience It is easy to learn, exciting, layable, and ill deinitely kee the ercussionists on the alert revie Only Musically yours, Legal se Requires urchase
