Provide this resource to all teachers and chaperones attending the show. DESTINATION Carlo Colla & Sons marionette puppetry will transport you and your students to the magical fairytale world of SLEEPING BEAUTY. This classic story is told with the help of Tchaikovsky s classical music. Watch in wonderment as meticulously crafted set pieces move to create scary forests or stunning palaces, while fairy godmothers, an evil queen, and a charming prince come to life to tell the story of the lovely Princess Aurora. INFO TO GO There are many types of characters in this puppet play: a lovely princess, charming prince, an evil queen and fairy godmothers. The puppeteers choose specific styles of movement for each puppet character. For example, pay attention to the way the queen moves compared to the way the princess moves. The Colla family from Italy has been creating marionette shows for their family and the public since 1700- that s over 300 years of puppetry! They are considered one of the most famous marionette companies in the world. The music of the play is composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a famous Russian composer who lived in the late 19th Century. He originally wrote the music for the ballet Sleeping Beauty. He also wrote the music for two other famous ballets, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Heads Up SLEEPING BEAUTY is 1 hour and 40 minutes, including an intermission and will be performed in The New Victory Theater, a 499-seat, three-level theater. This might be the first time your students have been inside of a venue like this. Make sure to look out for the beautiful cherubs in the ceiling decor, and see if you can find all of the bees (the official mascot of the theater) in the design throughout the theater. While the theater may seem big, every seat provides a terrific view, no matter where your students are seated!
