NBS Dance & Drama Club WORKSHOP PERFORMANCE Produced, Directed & Choreographed By Mr Mark Slade Performance on Thursday 10 th June 2015 At 11am in the School gym.

The Sound of Music The Captain blows his whistle and the children march on. The Captain exits (Maria smiles. The children start to giggle. Maria turns to the children who snap back to attention) At ease. (In unison, they place their hands behind their backs.) names Liesl: Well, now that there's just us, would you please tell me all your again and how old you are? I'm Liesl. I'm sixteen years old, and I don't need a governess. Well, I'm glad you told me, Liesl. We'll just be good friends. Friedrich: I'm Friedrich. I'm fourteen. I'm impossible. (laughs) Really? Who told you that, Friedrich? Friedrich: Fraulein Josephine. Four governesses ago. I'm Brigitta. (smiles) You, um, didn't tell me how old you are, Louisa. I'm Brigitta. She's Louisa. She's thirteen years old, and you're smart. I'm ten, and I think your dress is the ugliest one I ever saw. Brigitta, you shouldn't say that. Why not? Don't you think it's ugly? Of course. But Fraulein Helga's was ugliest.

Marta: I'm Kurt. I'm eleven. I'm incorrigible. Congratulations. What's "incorrigible"? I think it means you want to be treated like a boy. Mm-hm? I'm Marta, and I'm going to be seven on Tuesday, and I'd like a pink parasol. Well, pink's my favorite colour too. Yes, you're Gretl. And you're five years old? My, you're practically a lady. (Gretl and Marta laugh) Now, I have to tell you a secret. I've never been a governess before. You mean you don't know anything about being a governess? Nothing. I'll need lots of advice. Well, the best way to start is to be sure to tell father to mind his own business. (They crowd around Maria) Friedrich: You must never come to dinner on time. Never eat your soup quietly. And, during dessert, always blow your nose. M Slade NBS Dance & Drama May 2015

Gretl: Gretl: Liesl: Friedrich: Don't believe a word they say, Fraulein Maria! Oh, why not? Because I like you! Thank you Gretl (3 Claps) Alright everybody, over here. What are we going to do? Let s think of something to sing. Father doesn t like us to sing. Well perhaps we can change his mind. Now, what songs do you know? We don t know any songs. Not any? Music intro starts Gretl: Martha: We don t even know how to sing. No! Well Let s not lose any time. You must learn. But how? Song: DO-RE-MI M Slade NBS Dance & Drama May 2015

Let's start at the very beginning A very good place to start When you read you begin with Gretl: ABC When you sing you begin with do re mi Do re mi? Do re mi The first three notes just happen to be Do re mi Do re mi Do re mi fa so la ti (spoken) Oh let's see if I can make it easier Doe- a deer, a female deer Ray- a drop of golden sun Me- a name I call myself Far- a long, long way to run Sew- a needle pulling thread La- a note to follow so Tea- a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to do oh oh oh Gretl: Do A deer, a female deer Marta: Re A drop of golden sun Mi A name I call myself Fa A long long way to run Do-Re-Mi (The Sound of Music) So- a needle pulling thread Frederick: La A note to follow so Liesl Te A drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to Do Doe- a deer, a female deer Ray- a drop of golden sun Me- a name I call myself Far- a long, long way to run Sew- a needle pulling thread La- a note to follow so Tea- a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to do Do re mi fa so la ti do so do Maria (spoken): Now children do re mi fa so and so on Are only the tools we use to build a song Onces you have these notes in your head You can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up, like this: so do la fa mi do re Can you do that? So do la fa mi do re So do la ti do re do So do la ti do re do Good, now put it all together All: So do la fa mi do re, so do la ti do re do Good M Slade NBS Dance & Drama May 2015

But it doesn't mean anything So we put in the words. One word for every note, Like this: When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything You said one word for every note But when you sing A ny thing, You re using up three notes on one word! That s right, well, errrr, Sometimes we do that All: When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything Maria & Gretl Doooooo Do - A deer, a female deer Maria & Marta: Reeee Re - A drop of golden sun Maria & Miiiii Mi - A name I call myself Maria & Faaaaa Fa - A long long way to run Maria & Soooo.thread So - A needle pulling thread Maria & Frederick: Laaaa La - a note to follow so Liesl Teeee Do mi mi Mi so so Re fa fa La ti ti Do mi mi Mi so so Re fa fa La ti ti A drink with jam and bread All: That will bring us back to dooo Children sing only their own note Do re mi fa so la ti do do ti la so fa mi re Children sing 3 times: Do mi mi Mi so so Re fa fa La ti ti All: Anything Doe- a deer, a female deer Ray- a drop of golden sun Me- a name I call myself Far- a long long way to run Sew- a needle pulling thread La- a note to follow so Tea- a drink with jam and bread That will bring - us back to Do Re Mi Fa So La Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Ti Do SO - DO When you know the notes to sing You can sing most So Do La Fa Mi Do Re So Do La Fa La So Fa Mi Re Ti Do SO - DO M Slade NBS Dance & Drama May 2015
