PROGRAM NOTE When I was in sixth grade my Sunday School teacher, Rebecca McIntosh O'Dell, had my entire class memorize Psalms 1. While I have never been articularly adet at memorizing anything, to this day I can recite this Psalm by heart. In the Sring o 010 cancer took Rebecca's lie. It was this tragedy that insired the dual texts o Fearully, Wonderully. The irst text, sung exclusively by the solo tenor, is most o the Psalm Rebecca taught me. The second text, sung almost exclusively by the solo baritone, is a oem by Thomas Hardy entitled A Wasted Illness. Fearully, Wonderully ollows the joint journey o the combined texts, beginning contelatively with the Psalm, and slowly exloring the changing moods o the two texts. The iece is through-coosed, but the horn and viola resent a theme in the introduction that ermeates the work in modiied orms. This theme is meant to reresent God's resence, which never ades desite our ever-changing circumstances. The arcs o the two texts are similar, lending themselves to being sliced together over the course o the iece. However at times the individual meanings seem at odds with one another. In articular, the end o the Psalm combined with the end o Hardy's oem blurs the line between lie and death, and it is u to the listener to decide whether the eaceul resolution at the end o the work stems rom the recovery or the assing o the subject. vi
TEXTS Psalms 1 A Psalm o David. NIV. 1 Oh Lord, You have searched me, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you erceive my thoughts rom aar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are amiliar with all my ways. Beore a word is on my tongue you know it coletely, oh Lord. Where can I go rom your Sirit? Where can I lee rom your resence? I I go u to the heavens, you are there; i I make my bed in the deths, you are there. 10b...your right hand will hold me ast. 11 I I say, Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me, 1 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, or darkness is as light to you. 1 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother s womb. 1 I raise you because I am earully and wonderully made; your works are wonderul, I know that ull well. 1b...all the days ordained or me were written in your book beore one o them came to be. A Wasted Illness by Thomas Hardy Through vaults o ain, Enribbed and wrought with groins o ghastliness, I assed, and garish sectres moved my brain To dire distress. And hammerings, And quakes, and shoots, and stiling hotness, blent With webby waxing things and waning things As on I went. "Where lies the end To this oul way?" I asked with weakening breath. Thereon ahead I saw a door extend - The door to death. It loomed more clear: "At last!" I cried. "The all-delivering door!" And then, I knew not how, it grew less near Than theretoore. And back slid I Along the galleries by which I came, And tediously the day returned, and sky, And lie--the same. And all was well: Old circumstance resumed its ormer show, And on my head the dews o comort ell... 1b...when I awake, I am still with you. a Search me, God, and know my heart... b...and lead me in the way everlasting. *Note that both texts have been excerted or use in this work. Both texts are in the ublic domain. vii
