The Waltz has been the king of dances since its earliest incarnations in the late 18th century. It s a dance that is synonymous with romance, elegance and spectacle, and the great waltz melodies have endured from generation to generation. This collection features some of the most famous waltzes from masters of the genre: Johann Strauss Jr and Franz Lehár in the ballroom, Tchaikovsky on the ballet stage, and classics of popular song that simply beg for the whirl of black tails and evening gowns Edelweiss, Moon River, Que sera, sera And the days of the waltz are far from over, with exquisite offerings from living, local composers such as Peter Sculthorpe and Graeme Koehne. Sometimes, mind you, a waltz is not quite a waltz. Rafael Méndez s arrangement of Musetta s Waltz has become so mellow that it has lost its trademark triple-time rhythm, but the lush, romantic harmonies are completely faithful to the spirit of the waltz. After all, when waltzes first appeared, they were considered scandalously risqué, with the couples holding each other so close And of course two of the tracks, the Magic Bullets polka and the Cricketer s Galop, aren t waltzes at all but every good bandmaster knows to vary the pace of the evening with a selection of upbeat numbers! But enough words on with the dance! h 3
