Visual Branding Guidelines THE SHIELD LOGO THE LOGO The official logo of Holy Angel University shows the image of an Angel brandishing a shield on which the school s acronym is inscribed. The two other inscriptions, a cross and a lamp, symbolize the University s Catholic identity and its function as an educational institution, respectively. This logo was adopted as the University s official logo starting 2008 when HAU celebrated its 75th founding anniversary, to signal the beginning of a new period in the school s history. This logo shall be called the Shield Logo, to distinguish it from the old one that shall be known as the Classic Logo. The old logo may still be used in special occasions to evoke nostalgia, e.g., alumni reunions, anniversaries, etc. 1
Always print the Shield Logo with the perscribed colors whenever possible. Use the perscribed black-and-white logo for single-colour prints. Visual Branding Guidelines A wordmark is a typography that serves the same purpose as that of a logo. It may also be used as an accompanying element to complement another graphic image. Some products like McDonald s, Coka-Cola, and Philippine Air Lines use wordmarks as logos. Primary & Secondary Wordmarks In the case of HAU, the complete name of the University is used alongside the official logo to complement it. The image below is the Primary Wordmark. It is placed either on the right side of, or below, the logo. It is not intended as a stand-alone to replace the logo. 1234567890.,:;!(){} ABCDEFGHIJKLM NOPQRSTUVWXYZ Trajan Pro font face is used for this wordmark. Alteration is not allowed in any way. It can be resized but not lower than 7pts, so that it maintains its proportion with the shield logo. The colour version uses Colours B & C based on the logo s colour palette. B C If the background is dark and will not give sufficient contrast to the primary wordmark, its black parts can be reversed to white. Placing the primary wordmark along with the Shield Logo gives a composite of the two. This can be simply called the Composite. 3
The Primary Wordmark s size (height) proportion with the Shield Logo should be based on on the angel s height just from above its head down to the point where the angel s robe touches the edge of the logo s Shield frame. An option that can be used by any department or organization in the University to customize the composite is the Secondary Wordmark. It is the department/organization s own woodmark attached to the University s wordmark. It must use a standard font face (Arial regular) with reduced size to emphasize the University s precedence over the department/unit. Visual Branding Guidelines White Areas, & Spacing Rules To make each element of the logo stand out, a required white area should surround each element. Other graphic elements should not invade this area. The minimum space is a set measurement determined in each element and is defined as. The will change proportionally as the signature increases and decreases in size. Spaces between elements are defined as y. It will change proportionally along with the value of. Figure # 1 Solo (Shield Logo): The logo must have equal spacing from every side (). (fig.1) Figures # 2 & 3 Shield Logo with Primary Wordmark (Composite): The white area of the composite should have equal spacing from every side (fig. 2 & fig. 3). The upper and lower spacing for the composite on the horizontal position (fig. 3) should be based on the primary wordmark ignoring the upper & lower spacing rules for the shield logo. The space (y) between the primary wordmark and the shield logo should be 1/3 the measure of one side of the surrounding space. This rule works for either the horizontal or the vertical positions. fig.3 fig.1 fig.2 y y 5
Figures # 4 & 5 Placing a Secondary Wordmark: For placing a secondary wordmark, a vertical bar (fig. 4) that is as tall as the shield logo should be placed in midspace between the Primary Wordmark and the Secondary Wordmark (z, fig. 5). The Secondary Wordmark should be aligned with the center guide of the composite. fig.4 fig.5 z z 6
Visual Branding Guidelines Incorrect Usage The Composite s wordmark and graphics, whether the colored version (left, top) or the black-and-white (left, bottom) should not be altered in any way, such as etending, condensing, outlining, adding borders, special effects or drop shadows, or attaching other words or graphics. Eamples of alterations: Stretching and compressing: Adding outlines: Adding shadows or other effects: Adding information: Changing colors: 7
Logo & Wordmark Composite over Graphics When placing the logo over a photograph, use a ghosted image of the photo or place the logo in an area of contrast, or adjust the layout to position the logo on a neutral background. Legible Insufficient Contrast 8
Visual Branding Guidelines Graphics, Seals, and Crest When the Shield Logo is placed alongside the logo of another department or organization in the University, the size and placement of the Shield Logo should emphasize its precedence over the other logo: When the Shield Logo is placed alongside the University s commemorative/anniversary logo, the former should be on the left and of equal size as the latter: When the Shield Logo is placed alongside that of a superior entity (e.g., national government agency, archdiocese), the HAU logo should be on the right. When the Shield Logo is placed alongside that of another school of University, as during a co-sponsorship of an event, the HAU logo should be on the left. 9
