Television Wall Mount with Fold out Desk A Baccalaureate thesis submitted to the School of Dynamic Systems College of Engineering and Applied Science University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology by Dan Ford April 2014 Thesis Advisor: Professor Janak Dave, Ph.D.

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford ACHNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my parents for helping me fund this project. Without their support this project would not be possible. I would also like to thank Dennis and Patti Kolb for letting me use their tools and garage space to build this project. This was a huge help since I live in an apartment and do not have the space to construct the project. Ridge Metal Works was also a great help with the welding of the frame in this project. Without their help it would have taken much longer to weld the material together. 1

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford INTRODUCTION AND RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT The majority of apartment rooms are small and lacking in space. There is a limited amount of room for all of your furniture, appliances, etc. Over the years televisions, while growing in size, have managed to become thinner and lighter due to improved technology. Wall mounts have also become increasingly popular due to their efficient use of space and versatility; however, they can still be improved in design and functionality by adding features and using space more effetely. This would directly influence and improve the use space. The proposed design and build of a television wall mount with a foldout desk adds functionality as well as improved use of space. The design will include compartments for television related components such as cable boxes and gaming systems to be stored within the product. The desk top will be large enough to allow the user to have plenty of work space and will also feature storage for desk related items such as note books, folders, and pens or pencils. 3

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford INTERVIEWS Fred Rolfes, a potential TV wall mount customer, is thinking about getting a new TV that he can mount on the wall in his bedroom. He has been looking around at different TV wall mount products. Some of the qualities that he is looking for are: quality, strength, and the ability to move TV to view from anywhere in the room (up, down, and tilt). Some problems he is finding are weak design and large amount of holes in the wall. (1) Please refer to Appendix A for full interview notes. Andy Ford, a current TV wall mount consumer, has the fixed style wall mount that does not have a range of motion (mounted to wall with no movement in any direction). Some of the features he likes are ease of install, quality, works on different size TVs, and strength. He did not have anything negative to say about his TV wall mount. (2) Please refer to Appendix A for full interview notes. 4

Figure 4: Murphy Walnut Fold-out Convertible Desk 6

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford CUSTOMER FEEDBACK, OBJECTIVES, AND CHARACTERISTICS SURVEY ANALYSIS The survey had features that were found through the research of current products and interview information. These features where put into a survey that 10 people then completed the survey. First the survey told the background of the product and the reason the survey is needed. The second section asked the potential custom on a scale of 1 to 5 how important each feature was. The next section asked the potential customer how satisfied these features are on current products on the market. The final section dealt with how much would you the customer pay for this product. This was to gain a ball park price point. Table 1 shows that after analyzing the data collected from the survey customers believe that storage size is the most important and a built-in power cord is the least important. From this data relative weights are calculated as can be seen below. With this information this product should include large amounts of desk storage and hold large televisions while least import to the product would be a built-in power cord or full range of motion. This helps the designer come to the conclusion what is needed in the product to please the consumer. For complete survey results please see Appendix B. Features Customer Importance Relative Weight Storage (Desk) 4.5 11.0% Holds Large TVs 4.1 10.0% Large Work Space 4.4 10.0% Durability 4.0 10.0% Easy to Use 4.0 9.0% Thin Design 4.0 9.0% One Person Operation 3.9 9.0% Easy to Install 3.9 9.0% Storage (TV Mount) 3.2 8.0% Full Range of Motion 3.5 8.0% Built-in Power Cord 2.5 7.0% Table 1: Customer Importance & Relative Weight 7

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford PRODUCT FEATURES AND OBJECTIVES Based on survey information, the product objectives are a list of features that are taken into consideration. For this product, TV wall mount with foldout desk, I gathered information using a survey that asked questions about different features and how important the feature was and how happy the consumer is with the feature on current TV wall mounts and foldout desks. The goal of the objectives is to outline the project and to decide if the project has been a success. The Proof of Design agreement can be found in Appendix D in its entirety. TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS The product objectives and the survey information was then put into a quality function deployment spread sheet to figure out the relative importance of different engineering characteristics such as size, weight, and material. These characteristics have a relative importance that is calculated in the quality function deployment. Table 2 shows all the relative importance of all the engineering characteristics. As can be seen size is the most importance at 20.5% and the least importance is weight at 3.6%. This is a great because size is directly related to weight so since the consumer does not care about how much the product weights. Please see Appendix C for the full quality function deployment. Table 2: Relative Importance Features Relative Importance Size 20.0% Manufacturability 18.0% Volume of Storage 10.0% Weight Capacity 9.0% Material 9.0% Degrees of Freedom 7.0% Work Space Area 5.0% Steps of Deployment 5.0% Installation Time 5.0% AC Outlet 4.0% Weight 4.0% TV Size 4.0% 9

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford DESIGN DESIGN ALTERNATIVES During the design process four different concepts were developed. The first design featured folding legs to support the desktop. This would allow for a thin design and would offer the appropriate storage. The biggest flaw in this design is the complexity of the folding supports. This could make it very hard to manufacture. Figure five shows a detailed drawing of the folding leg concept. Design: Folding Legs Figure 5: Folding Legs Concept 10

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford The second design concept that was created was the hinge-up design. In this design the television would hinge upward. This would allow the desktop to fold down into place. This would design would work well but some type of support system would have to be installed to hold the television upward to deploy the desktop. This added system would make this design more complex and more expensive. Figure six shows a detailed drawing of the hinge up concept. Design: Hinge-up Figure 6: Hinge-up Concept 11

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford The third design featured a door that would slide to the left or right, depending on home configuration. The television would be mounted to a door that would slide to open to gain access to the desktop. The desktop would then fold downward. After the desktop is deployed the door would slide back into position. The problem with this design is that if the television is located in a tight room that doesn t have the room to slide the room left or right. Figure seven shows a detailed drawing of the slide left/right concept. Design: Slide Left/Right Figure 7: Slide Left or Right Concept 12

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford The fourth design featured a door that hinged open allowing access to the desktop. The desktop would then get folded down into the deployed position. One of the weaknesses of this design is that all of the television loading would be located on side of the mount creating a large force on that side. Figure eight shows a detailed drawing of the hinge left/right concept. Design: Hinge Left/Right Figure 8: Hinge Left or Right Concept 13

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford DESIGN SELECTION To pick the concept that best fits the consumer and manufacturing needs the weighted method was used. As shown in table three weights were given to the different characteristics and then based on the design a numerical value was given to each design. These values were multiplied by the weight and then summed to get the total weight. The concept that was picked was the hinge to right/left design. Weighted Rating Method Evaluated Characteristics Weights Designs Folding Supports Hinge Up Slide Right/Left Hinge to Right/Left Size of Storage 0.25 2 4 4 4 Room Needed to Deploy 0.20 4 4 2 4 Time to Deploy 0.20 2 3 4 4 Steps to Open/Close 0.15 4 2 2 2 Time to Assemble 0.10 2 2 4 3 Strength of Desk Top 0.10 4 2 2 2 Weighted Total 1.00 2.90 3.10 3.10 3.40 Table 3: Weighted Method 14

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford LOADING CONDITIONS The loading conditions for this product were developed for the proof of concept. The desktop was designed to support 200 lbs so that if someone press on the desktop it would not break it. The television mounting location was designed to support a television that weighted up to 75 lbs. 75 lbs on television mount 200 lbs on desktop 18

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford DESIGN ANALYSIS To preform analysis on the design, a finite element analysis (FEA) was ran on the SolidWorks model. The FEA revealed that the hinges were under the most stress. This was expected, they had a high combined stress of 2,000 psi. The hinges will be bought to the meet these requirements. The frame had a high of 1,800 psi combined stress in some locations. To counter this stress the material that has been picked has a tensile yield strength of 40,000 psi and an ultimate tensile strength of 45,000 psi, this will provide plenty of strength. Figure 12 shows the results from the FEA. Figure 12: Iso Finite Element Analysis 19

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford Another area of that had to be looked into was how the product was going to be mounted onto the wall. The product was designed to be mounted into the studs in a wall. The mounting locations are 16 inches on center which complies with building codes. The max load on a stud should be around 100 lbs at one mounting location. The stubs will easily be able to support the mount because of it six ¼ inch leg bolts. Figure 13 shows the support reactions at the mounting locations. Figure 13: Support Reactions 20

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford COMPONENT SELECTION The material that was used for the frame was 6061-T6 aluminum. This type of aluminum was selected due to its great strength while being light weight. An added benefit to using this aluminum is that is welds very nicely. The wood paneling that was selected was ¼ inch thick. This thickness was used because it is easy to work with. The door hinges that were selected are designed to support large solid doors that are over 2 inches thick and over 42 inches wide. I felt that these heavy duty hinges would work for this application. The piano hinges that were selected meet had the largest pin and were made from the thickest material while filling the size requirement. The glue that was used to stick the wood paneling to the frame was selected due to its ability to stick to both wood and metal. 21

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford TESTING Purpose: Desktop Loading Test The purpose of desktop loading test is to test the weight that the desktop can hold in the deployed position. This test will have the television wall mount mounted to the testing wall. The desktop will be in the deployed position. 200 lbs of weight will be added in 50 lbs increments till the 200 lbs is reached. Data collection method: Desktop Loading Test The weight that was used for this test was four (4) 50 lbs bags of Qickrete. These bags were weighed and totaled to make sure the 200 lbs was reached. The bags were then put on the desktop one at a time till all four (4) bags were on the desktop. After all four (4) bags were on the desktop a picture was taken for documentation. Results: Desktop Loading Test The desktop held the weight as expected. I feel that the desktop could hold another 100 lbs without a problem. Figure 14 shows the 200 lbs on the desktop. Figure 14: Desktop Loading Test 4

TV Wall Mount With Foldout Desk Ford Purpose: Television Weight Test The purpose of the television weight test is to make sure that the television mounting area can support a television that has a weight up to 75 lbs. To perform this test 75 lbs will be fastened to the television mounting area using string. The weight will be added in 25 lbs increments till the 75 lbs is reached. Data collection method: Television Weight Test The weight that was used for this test was two (2) 25 lb lifting weights and five (5) 5 lb lifting weights. The weight was then attached to the mounting area using string. Once the 75 lbs was reached a picture was taken for documentation.
