Ankeny Centennial High School Choral Music Audition Information www.ankenychoirs.com

March 6, 2015 Dear Parents and Choral Music Students, The Ankeny Centennial High School Choral Music Department would like to take the opportunity to communicate with you the information regarding vocal auditions for the upcoming school year. We encourage you to look closely at the information, examine the audition form attached, and please contact us if you need further clarification. Vocal Auditions Each student wishing to participate in the auditioned advanced mixed chorus, advanced women s chorus, or any of the show choirs will be required to complete a vocal audition. The audition packet is available at Ankeny Centennial High School or Northview Middle School, via Charms office online, or at our website: www.ankenychoirs.com The packet can be picked up at any time between now and the audition dates of April 27-30. Current high school students will audition during the school day, if possible. A sign-up sheet will be available. All current 8 th and 9 th grade students will need to sign up for an after-school slot, and the sign up sheets will be posted at Northview. PRIOR to your audition, you MUST fill out the registration form at www.ankenychoirs.com. Again, you WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO AUDITION UNTIL YOU HAVE FILLED OUT THIS FORM. CURRENT MEMBERS OF CONCERT CHOIR AND SPECTRUM WILL NOT HAVE TO AUDITION. Those students in Concert Choir And Spectrum will need to talk to Mr. Miller about their intentions for next year. The auditions for the 2015-2016 school year will consist of the following, in the order that is listed: 1. Vocal Tone Each student will sing a vocalese that will serve to identify the tone quality of the singer. There will be a five note scale ascending and then descending, and a vocalese that is included in this packet. 2. Scales Each student will sing one major scale in his or her range, using solfege and hand signs, without accompaniment. The key of the scale will be determined at the audition by Mr. Miller. Each student will then be required to sing chromatically from do to so then back to do. 3. Prepared Selection Each student auditioning for a show choir will sing an excerpt from a choral work provided by the Ankeny Centennial Choral Music Department. They will be given the starting pitch, and the key will be established on the piano. The student will then sing the excerpt without accompaniment. The selection is attached to this document. Select the voice part that will feature the best part of your voice. 4. Students auditioning for an advanced concert ensemble (mixed or women) will also need to prepare a classical solo and be prepared to sight-read both a rhythmic and melodic exercise. Either Smart Music or a CD will accompany the solo audition. It is at the discretion of the auditionee which technology they use. Anyone interested in auditioning for Spectrum MUST also audition for an advanced concert ensemble.

Please note that each student will be evaluated and placed according to where the directors feel that the most personal growth can be made. We understand that not every student will be placed in the ensemble that they desire. Also, please understand that the work ethic, teamwork, attitude, rehearsal skills and desire expressed on a daily basis during the previous school year is a significant audition component. Please arrive for your audition 10-15 minutes early so you can warm-up. Choral Curriculum 2015-2016 Ankeny Centennial High School Concert Choir Any student in grades 10-12 at Ankeny Centennial High School is eligible to audition for the Ankeny Centennial High School Concert Choir. This is an advanced, select ensemble. The ACHS Concert Choir will participate in All-State preparation in the fall, possible choral competitions during the show choir season, and participate in extra performances outside of the concert season as necessary. Advanced Women s Chorus (Cantamus) All female students 10-12 at ACHS are eligible to audition. Mixed Chorus (Centennial Singers) Anyone not wishing to audition, all males not selected for Chamber Choir and all females not selected for Chamber Choir or advanced women s chorus will be enrolled in Mixed Chorus. All students enrolled in choir will be assessed a $10 apparel fee to cover the costs of cleaning and repairing the concert apparel. Show Choirs There are three co-curricular show choirs at Ankeny Centennial High School. Each choir meets for rehearsal throughout the school year in the evening usually Monday s and Thursday s. Every student in show choir will be assessed a show choir fee, which varies based on the ensemble. A full breakdown of the show choir fees and the dates of show choir events are enclosed. Show Choir Audition Information All students currently enrolled in 9 th -12 th grade AND in choir are eligible to audition for show choir. Those students who are placed in a show choir must be willing to commit to the performance schedule, rehearsal schedule and participation fees associated with each ensemble. In the past, the choral department has been successful in working with students who are active in other activities including drama, band, speech, athletics, dance, and other school activities. We will make every effort to accommodate these activities when we know about potential conflicts in advance. Please make sure to check your personal, family, work and any other schedule you need prior to auditions! Juniors and seniors: please notice that ACT exams, college visits, school auditions and other personal scheduling need to be arranged around the dates listed below. Please see Mr. Miller if you have any questions or concerns regarding the audition information.
