The Greater April 2007 Columbia Organist A Publication of the Greater Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists The Greater Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists A note from the Dean I hope this newsletter finds you well rested, well prepared, and already through your spring planning. If not, you may appreciate that there will not be an April meeting of the Greater Columbia Chapter of AGO. There are still plenty of opportunities abounding this month for you to participate in. These include recitals and performances by our members: Mark Husey, Elisa Moskovitz, and Christopher Nash. We also need you to brush off the organ shoes and volunteer to play at our last meeting of the year, the progressive dinner, which will be Friday, May 4. We will visit Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St. Martin s-in-the-fields Episcopal Church, and Trinity Lutheran Church, home of a historic one-manual pipe organ. I wish everyone a stress-free Easter and look forward to seeing everyone around town at one of these upcoming events. Tony Volunteers Needed To play at the Friday, May 4, Progressive Dinner. Silent film maestro to present two Chaplin comedies at University of South Carolina Silent film accompanist Dennis James will return to Columbia to play the musical score of two Charlie Chaplin comedies Friday, April 6, at the University of South Carolina. James presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be at 8 p.m. in the School of Music recital hall. He will present Easy Street from 1917 and The Kid from 1921. In 1916, Chaplin signed a contract with Mutual Film Corporation to create 12 short movies. The contract made him the highest-paid entertainer of his time, and he made the films in an astonishing 16-month period. Easy Street is an inner-city tale of a tramp-turned-policeman with a clever love story intertwined. The Kid, Chaplain s first feature film as writer, director and star, grossed more than $2.5 million, one of biggest moneymaking movies of its day. It co-starred six-year-old stage sensation Jackie Coogan. The presentation on April 6 is the third in a new series of such screenings with live accompaniment by James, who tours internationally as a composer and musician specializing in recreating historically accurate scores of silent film. The USC Evening of Silent Film series is hosted by Carolina s School of Music and the Film Studies Program, where James is a research fellow. His past concerts at Carolina featured the 1929 films, Asphalt and People on Sunday. 7

For more information on the screening, call Dr. Julie Hubbert, School of Music, at 803-777-3214, or Dr. Susan Courtney, Film Studies Program, at 803-777-3261. 8
