ABOUT THE MUSIC Paul Dukas: anare our récéder "La Peri" (1912) Dukas' inal ork as an exansive tone oem or ull orchestra titled La Peri Written in a lush late Romantic style the ork is roaly knon est or the short rass anare that oens the ork Even though Dukas lived until 195 this tone oem as his inal ulication The anare as scored or our horns three trumets three tromones and tua This transcrition retains all the original harmonies dynamics and articulations Claude Deussy: anare to Le Martyre de Saint Séastien Act III (1911) Although an imortant ork ritten y a maor comoser Le Martyre is rarely erormed today The music as comosed in 1911 as incidental music or a lay y Gariele D'Annunzio ut the one-hour ork only remains today in ragments While not indicated in the ragment o the score the oening Prelude o the third act has to short rass anares that no exist only in arts ulished y Durand The irst is a dramatic ork o aroximately three minutes the second is a very short eight-ar restatement o the theme o the irst These anares ere ritten or our trumets six horns three tromones tua and timani (hich only adds rhythmic emhasis) Again this transcrition o the longer irst anare retains all o Deussy's harmonies dynamics and articulations

ABOUT THE MUSIC Charles Ives as orn in Danury Connecticut on Octoer 20 187 His musical training egan ith his ather ho exosed him to the orld o ark ands and nurtured Ives love o musical exerimentation He received ormal music training using traditional Germanic models rom Horatio Parker at Yale and sent ourteen years as a church organist Hoever he made his ortune y ounding the largest insurance irm o its time and did most o his comosing at night His orks are usually categorized into three hases: the irst traditional eriod (est knon are his irst Symhony and the Variations o America or organ) is surrisingly traditional and shos a e glimses into innovative comosing; the second eriod is much more radical (his Second and Third Symhonies the early string quartets) and shos his ascination ith itonality olyrhythms and quotes rom Americana; the inal eriod (eginning around 1910 and reresented y orks such as the Concord Sonata the Unansered Question and the Three Places in Ne England) is heavily exerimental and dissonant In 1918 Ives suerered a heart attack and retired rom the insurance usiness Although this let him more time to comose he gave u riting music or good in 1927 asserting that nothing sounded right to him anymore He died in Ne York city in 195 Much o Ives music as unknon during the time he comosed ut eginning in the 190 s musicians egan erorming his orks Henry Coell ulished many o Ives ieces in the Ne Music Quarterly and his Third Symhony on the Pulitzer Prize in 197 - much to Ives delight Ater his death in 195 he ecame more and more oular and eventually as recognized as one o America s most imortant comosers The 11 Songs cover an extended eriod in Ives career: 1887 1921 and ere ulished y Ives himsel in 1922 The range o musical ideas in these songs is extraordinary rom nostalgic tunes (Memories included in this collection) to arodies (The Side Sho also included here ith the droed eats in altz time ending in a quotation rom Tchaikovsky s Sixth Symhony) to exerimental songs requiring virtuoso caailities on the art o the erormers Some include otional rass arts and others ere reritten into his instrumental orks The ive songs transcried here are some most suited to erormance y rasses and ere taken rom the original 1922 version All musical indications in the originals such as dynamics and articulations are retained in these transcritions; all editorial additions have een ket to a minimum and are clearly marked in arentheses - (rit) - to distinguish them rom Ives originals Temo suggestions indicated y metronome markings ere added y me The original song Memories as in to arts ith the irst song (Very Pleasant included here) segueing into a very dierent second art; in this transcrition a short ending as added y me The title Ives loved good old-time ditties layed y the tromone (listen to the end o the Second Symhony) These songs ere ondly ritten or Danial Hoard ass tromonist in the Boise Philharmonic and ormer student o mine at Boise State

ABOUT THE MUSIC Hans Leo Hassler (156-1612) son o an organist as orn in Nuremerg and received his initial training in music rom his ather As a young man he studied in Venice and ecame amiliar ith the great olyhonic music eing ritten there at that time; later he ecame close riends ith Giovanni Garieli oth eventually studying comosition ith Giovanni's uncle Andrea Hassler returned to Germany in 1585 then ecame an organist in Augsurg; in addition to his instrumental career he gained a reutation as an innovative comoser and also traveled throughout Germany as a consultant in the construction o ie organs He died in 1612 ending his career as choral director and organist in Dresden His successors ere Heinrich Schütz and Michael Praetorius Hassler is est rememered as erhas the inest organist o his time and one o the irst comosers to rite in the Venetian style outside o Italy His sacred motet Verum caro actum est comosed in 1591 and scored or unaccomanied choir {SSAATB} is an excellent examle o his riend Giovanni Gareili's inluence The text is taken rom the Prologue o St ohn's Gosel: And the Word as made lesh and delt among us and e sa his glory the glory as it ere o the only egotten o the ather ull o grace and truth This transcrition is taken rom the comlete orks (Hans Leo Hassler: Sämtliche Werke ed CR Crosy {Wiesaden 1961 } [C i]) There are o course no indications o dynamics articulation style or temo in the original Thus all editorial markings ere added y me; they ere ket to a minimum and or the most art relect the musical lines and the text This transcrition should e erormed in a vocal manner never too aggressive and ith care that all voices e heard and layed in a similar style The antihonal nature o the music ill e enhanced y arranging the ensemle ith arts 1- on one side -6 on the other
