FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEMORIAL SALUTE, MOVIE NIGHTS, WORLD & NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERES MEAN SUMMER AT THE MANN NEVER SOUNDED SO GOOD Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Philly POPS Headline 2016 Summer Classics Series in Celebration of the Mann s 40 th Anniversary Season Series Opens Memorial Day Weekend PHILADELPHIA (Apr. 6, 2016) Kicking off Memorial Day weekend, the Mann s 2016 Summer Classics Series will feature eight performances by three renowned orchestras, including the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone and the North American premiere of Firebird: Reimagined. The Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and The Philly POPS will each take the Mann stage this summer for a diverse selection of performances that will engage audiences of all ages. The Mann s 40 th anniversary season is truly a season to celebrate, said Catherine Cahill, President and CEO of the Mann. The legacy of artistic excellence that has been the hallmark of the Mann these past 40 years is carried on in this season s varied and accessible orchestral programs. From the beloved music of Tchaikovsky, the powerful works of Stravinsky, to the magical film score of John William s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone and Howard Shore s iconic film score in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, this year s Classics Series promises to offer a rich and dynamic orchestral program for every taste and preference. Starting Summer with a Salute: On Memorial Day weekend, the Mann and The Philly POPS present Memorial Salute. Part of the POPS Salute Series, the family-friendly performance will celebrate the American tradition of service through a salute to the troops and first responders featuring special guests Allison Blackwell and Hugh Panaro. These two Broadway sensations, both native Philadelphians, will join Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece POPS orchestra for an unforgettable evening. In celebration of all those who serve, complimentary tickets will be given to 2,000 veterans, active military, Philadelphia police and fire departments, and their families. In late June, The Philadelphia Orchestra returns to its Philadelphia summer home to celebrate the Mann s 40 th anniversary season with three classical concerts, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru, including a special anniversary performance (June 21), featuring music drawn from the repertoire played in its first season at the Mann in 1976, followed by the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks (June 24). In July, The Philadelphia Orchestra will undertake the North American premiere of Firebird: Reimagined (July 20). Featuring the complete 1910 ballet score of Stravinsky s The Firebird accompanied by a new interpretation of the original Ballets Russes staging, larger-than-life puppets, inspired by the artistry of the Broadway sensation War Horse and created by Janni Younge of South Africa s renowned Handspring Puppet Company will accompany this work. Nolan Williams, Jr., CEO of NEWorks Productions and Festival Artistic Director for the Mann, will curate the first half of the Firebird: Reimagined concert featuring a performance by multi-grammy-winning, South African vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Firebird: Reimagined is supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and The Presser Foundation.

Movies @ the Mann: The Mann s popular Movies @ the Mann series is back by popular demand. It will feature three beloved favorites, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone (June 23) and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (July 23) both with The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Back to the Future with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (July 9). Audiences will relive the magic of the films in high-definition on a giant screen while hearing these orchestras perform the film scores live. Movies @ the Mann is presented by Qatar Airways. Finally, Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions returns on July 10. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform all new arrangements with carefully timed visuals from both recent and classic Pokémon video games. SATURDAY, MAY 28: The Mann and The Philly POPS Present: Memorial Salute A Philly POPS Salute Series performance at the Mann honoring our nation s traditions, values and commitment to service. The evening will include Beethoven s Leonore Overture No. 3, Rachmaninoff s Piano Concerto No. 2 played by rising star pianist and Curtis Institute artist Daniel Hsu, and the brilliant Maurice Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky s Pictures from an Exhibition. The Harry Potter film series is one of those once-in-alifetime cultural phenomena that continues to delight millions of fans around the world. Audiences will relive the magic of the film in high-definition on a giant screen while hearing the orchestra perform John Williams unforgettable score. Conductor: Justin Freer Tickets: $25-$55 FRIDAY, JUNE 24: Tchaikovsky Spectacular with The Philadelphia Orchestra with Fireworks This all-tchaikovsky program will begin with Tchaikovsky s Symphony No. 4, the most dramatic of Tchaikovsky s last symphonies. Its recurrent motif of fate ties this tumultuous masterpiece together. The evening will also feature Swan Lake, the lushest and most romantic of Tchaikovsky s three story ballets, and the 1812 Overturecomplete with fireworks. Now, fans old and new will experience the thrill of this time-traveling, coming-of-age story in a whole new way on a giant screen with a full symphony

orchestra performing Alan Silvestri s dazzling musical score live in sync with the movie. Audiences will also be in for an exclusive treat: approximately 20 minutes of brand new music added by award-winning composer Silvestri to the film's score especially for this unique live orchestra presentation. Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions has become the must-see video game concert of the year, giving fans and newcomers of all ages a chance to experience the evolution of the Pokémon franchise like never before. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities.
