5 ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Jonathan Tooby Conductor Jonathan Tooby has actively been involved in the Perth Music scene for over 30 years predominantly as a cellist. In the early 90s he spent three years studying the cello privately and also at the Royal College of Music in London and has subsequently had a very successful and extensive career as a cellist. He secured a tutti cello position in the WASO at 19 and performed with them as a permanent member until 2007. As a cellist he continues to have a busy and rich freelance music life, performing his beloved chamber music, teaching at Guilford Grammar School and continuing with WASO as a casual cellist. Jonathan began his conducting training when he left the Orchestra in 2007. After completing a short but intense Masters course in Melbourne with John Hopkins he successfully auditioned for the Symphony Australia International Conductor Development Program where he was a participant for three years. At around the same time he formed the new music ensemble Etica which he directed for four years. Jonathan was also conducting assistant for Richard Mills when he was Artistic Director of the WA Opera. He continues to conduct orchestras in Perth including the WA Youth Orchestra and Fremantle Symphony Orchestra among others.
