Betty Bonifassi makes solo debut with provocative album BRENDAN KELLY, The Montreal Gazette 09.20.2014 Betty Bonifassi is no newcomer to the music world, but she s never released an album of her own. Until now. And the self-titled collection out on Tuesday was 16 years in the making. You might not know Bonifassi s name, but you probably know her big, soulful voice. You may have seen the Montreal artist at the 2004 Academy Awards, belting out Belleville Rendez-vous, the Oscar-nominated theme song to the brilliant Quebec/France animated feature Les Triplettes de Belleville. Bonifassi sang a couple of songs on that soundtrack, which was composed by Benoît Charest, her husband at the time. She then collaborated with DJ Champion, contributing lead vocals to his groundbreaking 2004 album Chill em All and to his touring show for the five years after that. She was also the frontwoman for the acclaimed electro-rock outfit Beast. So she hasn t exactly been slacking off for the past 16 years. But all that time, the ideas that would lead to her first solo album were floating around in her head. It all started when she was doing some research for a Montreal francophone stage adaptation of John Steinbeck s classic novel Of Mice and Men. The producers wanted her to find some songs from the 1930s to perform in the show, and she discovered slave and chain-gang songs that she thought would be perfect for the production. Some of those songs turned up on Chill em All, in revamped, dancefloor-friendly fashion. With the new album, she s taken another set of African-American songs from the 19th century and early 20th century and given them a unique electronic 21st-century treatment. These are mostly songs recorded by legendary musical anthropologist Alan Lomax taped in prisons or in the fields with chain gangs reimagined with musical accompaniment newly written by Bonifassi and Jean-François Lemieux. Lemieux also co-produced the album, with Alex McMahon, and they ve gone for a sound that s rich in keyboards and avoids anything that sounds even the slightest bit folky. When I heard these songs for the first time, I heard Motown, I heard the soul from the music I loved to listen to when I was young, said Bonifassi. And I think we re in the same place as we were 100 years ago. It s not pessimistic. It s the reality. Slavery is not finished yet. My mother comes from Serbia, and all those people from the Balkan empire were slaves for all of the European empires for six centuries. I found something similar with the African people and (people from the Balkans). I found something in the eyes of the Balkan people that also exists with African people. It wasn t sadness that I found. It was strength. It s that these people have suffered so much that they ve discovered something about life that we still haven t learned. I found a candour and a tenderness. They have something so strong inside themselves that can t be taken away. And I see that in the eyes of my African friends, and I see the same thing in the eyes of my friends from the former Yugoslavia. And that s what I wanted to capture on this album. The roots of the songs are absolutely traditional but the music is anything but, thanks to the electro work of backing musicians Lemieux, McMahon and Benjy Vigneault. I took all the textures from today the electro, the synth, the sampling, the big sound, very bassy, very drummy, and this is the way I modernized them, said Bonifassi. It s forgetting all of the textures of the roots. There s no guitar on my album, no banjo, no ukulele, nothing folkish. In conversation, Bonifassi couldn t hide her excitement about this long-gestating project finally coming to fruition. For her, it s a set of songs that pay tribute to her own roots in the Balkans and to all the suffering that goes with that and to her first musical inspiration in the music of black America.

I heard Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin in those songs. I heard Billie Holiday. I heard all these great soul singers that still touch us today. Betty Bonifassi s self-titled album is released on Tuesday. Bonifassi launches the album with a free show Monday at 8 p.m. at Cabaret du Mile End, 5240 Parc Ave. http://www.montrealgazette.com/entertainment/betty+bonifassi+makes+solo+debut+with+provocative+album/10 223405/story.html
