Broadcast Cable Information UNITS Broadcast Support System Prepared by: Chris Pezzutti Chief Engineer, UNITS Broadcast Transmission / Cable Telecommunications Engineering Overview The following wiring & cabling infrastructure was designed and installed in the Jerome Schottenstein Center (JSC) in order to support a wide variety of broadcast media. As part of this effort, this support system is delineated into two separate groups: BROADCAST and ENG. BROADCAST. While both are suited for transmission of baseband video and audio; they have been engineered to target specific broadcaster activities. ENG Electronic News Gathering The JSC has four (4) ENG systems installed in the facility; each of which has been engineered and tailored to the needs of local affiliate broadcasters. Currently, WBNS (CBS affiliate channel 10), WCMH (NBC owned channel 4) and WSYX (ABC affiliate channel 6) all have long term leases and exclusive use of 3 of the 4 systems installed today. The 4 th system is leased on a scheduled or first-term-first-served basis, and consists of the following connectivity: BNC terminated COMMSCOPE 5765 serial digital video cable to all ENG designated locations within the arena. (See attached arena layout) 3-pin XLR (balanced audio) terminated COMMSCOPE 1524 AES/EBU 110 ohm cable to all ENG designated locations within the arena. (See attached arena layout and configuration matrix for gender terminations at each specific location) ENG Numbering Nomenclature (JBE) ENG locations are designated as JBE-nX on all broadcast communications panels. nx is a 2-character designation where n is a numeric value (1-7) representing each of the arena camera location levels: 1. Arena Level 2. Entry Level 4. Terrace Level There are no designations for #3 or #5 6. Writing Press Level 7. Catwalk Thus, JBE-4D would be located on the Terrace Level and JBE-1B would be located on the Arena Level. The X 2 nd letter designation has been arbitrarily assigned throughout the facility. The ENG system has been designed to accommodate and support primarily field production activities, specifically those that don t require or involve the use of the remotely powered and CCU controlled cameras. Due to the cable distances involved in the JSC, LINE LEVEL AUDIO ONLY is supported by the ENG audio cabling. While some mic level applications have been used in the facility, it is not recommended or supported. The audio system has been successfully used with several IFB systems used on local affiliate ENG trucks. 7

BROADCAST Satellite Uplink (Backhaul) Live broadcasting out of the JSC is via fiber-optic backhaul using the UNITS (OSU Telecommunications Division) broadcast transmission router to a commercial C-Band earthstation located in Columbus, Ohio. Independent dual path NTSC video routing with up to three (3) audio carriers are available for all live broadcast events. The rates for this service are market competitive and can be scheduled with or without hourly transponder time. For complete details, contact Chris Pezzuti with UNITS Broadcast Operations at 614-292-6990. Broadcast Infrastructure: Triax/DT-12 The JSC has a single house triax system installed. It s primary design purpose is to support remotely powered CCU controlled camers. The house triax or broadcaster system is leased on a first-come-first-served basis and consists of the following connectivity: Triax terminated (ADC TCJ/TCP-C12) COMMSCOPE 7826 RG11 triax to all broadcast designated locations within the arena DT12 terminated (DK-37) COMMSCOPE 152412 AES/EBU 110 ohm cabling to specific broadcast locations within the arena BNC terminated COMMSCOPE 5765 serial digital video cable to a limited number of broadcast (JBT) locations within the arena 3-pin XLR (balanced audio) terminated COMMSCOPE 1524 AES/EBU 110 ohm cable to a limited number of broadcast (JBT) locations with the arena See attached arena layout map for locations The characteristics of the BNC video and 3-pin XLR audio are the same as for the ENG/JBE. Please note that some broadcast locations DO NOT have Dt-12 audio jacks Local Affiliate ENG Pedestals Tie-in ENG/Microwave and satellite uplink trucks are supported through the use of access panels or pedestals located in Grey Lot #1 parking area. (See attached map). There are a total of five (5) pedestals, each of which has an A and B designation (two sides of each pedestal). Each side, A & B has the following tie-in connectivity: 2 Female BNC terminated COMMSCOPE 5765 serial digital video cable 4 2 male, 2 female 3-pin XLR (balanced audio) terminated COMMSCOPE 1524 AES/EBU 110 ohm All patch cables for tie-in to the pedestals must be provided by each ENG or broadcast support crew. All pedestals terminate in the arena broadcast room. Access to pedestals is normally on first-come-first-served basis. However due to the anticipated demand for arena tie-in requests, we ask that ALL requests for tie-in be coordinated the JSC video support Mark Smith: 614-688-5359 The Broadcast Room for the arena is located off of the loading dock at the west side of the building on the Arena Level. All JBE/JBT communications panels in the arena terminate at this location, including tie-in to the BROADCAST/ENG pedestals located in Grey Lot #1. Production truck parking is directly outside the room accessible through Rollup door #1. Access to this room should be coordinated and scheduled through the UNITS Broadcast Transmission Group at 614-688-3324 8
