Program Notes WPE OT is a rock n roll tune about suring that was perormed and made popular by The Suraris in the 960s. The term wipe out reers to getting knocked o one s surboard by a wave instead o having a successul ride. Notes to the Conductor The entire piece should be played o the string and at the rog in order to create energy and an authentic rock sound. The only exceptions would be the glissandi which appear in several o the parts and the inal two bars o the tune where the whole bow should be used by violins and violas or the blues-scale improvisation. t is especially important that the chop parts (o-beat accompaniment igures) in the second violin third violin and viola parts at letter C are percussive o the string and at the rog. From letter C to the inal two bars the celli and basses should be divided with hal playing arco and hal pizzicato or the best eect. Though this is a popular tune it also provides an opportunity to teach o-string bowing and chromatic ingering. Remind the violin and viola students to keep their ingers in contact with the string as they move between high and low second or irst ingers. Violin viola and cello parts remain entirely in irst position; the ew glissandi parts exceed this but are easily managed. Second violins may want to mark their ingerboard at high G on the G string where they begin their glissando. The bass part includes passages that use the second and third positions; these are clearly marked and ingerings have been provided. The drumming eects on the bass require players to remove all watches rings and other jewelry rom both hands beore beginning the piece. Try to get accurate placement o the accents during this very amous syncopated passage. This piece can be perormed by string orchestra alone or with the addition o optional piano electric guitar electric bass headless tambourine and drumset.
