2 THE COMPOSER Vincent Cassotta has been a proessional musician and teacher since 1977. An accomplished trumpet player, he toured nationally with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has perormed as a ree-lance musician with rank Sinatra, The Manhattan Transer, Ella itzgerald, Bobby Vinton, Sergio ranchi, The our Tops, Sammy Davis, Jr., Andy Williams, and the Jimmy Tommy Dorsey Orchestras. In addition, he has played in numerous pit orchestras or productions such as Annie, Grease, La Cage Aux olles, and All That Jazz, and has perormed with the Springield Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra New England, and the Summer estival Orchestra. Mr. Cassotta received his B.A. in Jazz Studies rom Westield State College in Westield, MA and his M.S. in Music Education rom Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. In addition, he completed undergraduate coursework at the Hartt School o Music in Hartord, CT. Mr. Cassotta has been teaching music at the elementary and secondary levels since 1986 in the Enield Connecticut Public School system. As a high school band director, his ensembles received several awards, including being a inalist at The Berklee Jazz estival in Boston. Mr. Cassotta was the ounder and director o the Enield Community Jazz Ensemble. He currently teaches elementary instrumental and general music in Enield. Mr. Cassotta is an active member o ASCAP, NEA, and the American ederation o Musicians. THE COMPOSITION Cha Cha de Salsa is an excellent piece to give students a taste or Latin American music. It exposes students to syncopation and allows dierent sections to play by themselves. Rhythms should be played crisply or the best eect and special attention should be given to potentially tricky syncopations (or example, m. 25). The piece would be a superb choice to add a multicultural selection to a school concert. Latin American music is a diverse mixture o elements rom Arican, Native American, European, and American styles. Two popular orms o Latin music are the Cha Cha Cha, a dance style that developed in Cuba in the 1950s, and Salsa, an intense dance music that was created in New York by immigrants rom the Caribbean during the 1960s and 1970s. The main characteristic o the style is its distinctive rhythmic quality. Instead o swinging the beat, Latin music uses straight eight notes. There is a strong Arican lavor to Latin rhythms. Most songs in Latin styles are built on a repeating, irregular rhythmic pattern called a clave. The oundational rhythmic pattern in Cha Cha de Salsa is played by the snare drum. Beore rehearsing the piece, have students internalize the eel by clapping this rhythm. I hope you and your students enoy the piece!
