About The Music: SHOSHOLOZA is a traditional olk song o South Arica and Zimbabwe, and is usually sung in a call and resonse style In Zulu the title means go orward It originally was sung by all male work gangs being transorted by train to work or many months in the mines This olk song was subsequently transormed into a song o ride and strength and can be heard in many dierent versions in many dierent settings, rom street singers in the cities to Zulu warriors carrying sears and shields as they walk through the brush The ercussion instruments include authentic Arican substitutes, i available The snare drum art (snares o) could also be layed by a high conga The bass drum should be dry and layed with no ring The tambourine could be substituted with a lagerhone a bush instrument made rom bottle tos nailed onto a broomstick and then banged on the loor or scraed with a corrugated stick The bongos can be relaced with the talking drum, squeezing the tuning roes while striking the head with a small bent wooden mallet, which causes the itch to vary widely and roduces a unique eect Lastly, the congas (high and low) can be layed on a dembe, a skin covered hand drum shaed like a large goblet and layed with bare hands It might be a un roect or your ercussion layers to make lagerhones, which would also add to the audience aeal The melody has syncoations that may need exlanation and some drill However, the iece is quite reetitive and very rhythmical and once the rhythms are learned the students will have a great time laying them The song irst aears in call and resonse style, with the bass line and ercussion laying straight quarter notes Exaggerate the decrescendo at measure 9 so the addition o the bongos and congas with tambourine or lagerhone can easily be heard The rhythm attern or the bongos and congas remain the same whenever they lay An eight measure interlude searates the irst resentation o the olk song Beginning at measure 9, the tune begins with a simle bass line accomanied by snare drum and bass drum The tambourine and otional horn and tenor saxohone enter the second time through the reeat The next layer is the melody, irst resented by the cornet/trumet section, and the addition o the bongos or talking drum and inally the congas The uer woodwinds then take over the melody or eight measures as the uer brass begin the resonse These roles are reversed at measure 8, with the cornets/trumets resuming the melody (call) and the uer woodwinds adding a variation o the resonse The iece should continue to build in both intensity and volume as it rogresses This iece is resectully dedicated to Bryan Burton, roessor o Music Education and Coordinator o Graduate Studies, College o Visual and erorming Arts, West Chester University o ennsylvania He has traveled the world meeting with musicians and tribal leaders, listening to their music and learning their dances He is a true songcatcher, and has willingly shared his adventures and the music he has collected via his clinics and workshos at state, national and international music education conerences ortunately he has also shared the music with this arranger, roviding authentic olk songs rom around the world, the rhythm atterns used and the harmonies, when alicable Dr Burton is the source or all or art o the ollowing arrangements Hieroglyhs, Kiva: Rituals Ceremonies, Russian olk antasy, Who Can Sail Against The Wind, Arican olk Trilogy, Arican olk Trilogy #, Cherokee Rose, Chiewa Lullaby, Icelandic olk Trilogy, aanese olk Trilogy and ainted Desert The concert band world is richer or his many contributions SAMLE ANNE McGINTY is a critically acclaimed comoser/arranger o music or concert band, rom the beginning level to the most advanced Her intriguing instrumental colors and textures, combined with her masterul comositional skills, set her aart as a unique artist in the ield o educational music or concert band More inormation can be ound at queenwoodcom Q88300
