Welcome IFI Education: Supporting film in school curricula and promoting moving image culture for young audiences. We currently reach 20,000 students around Ireland at secondary and primary level with our extensive programme. This includes films in Irish, French, German and Spanish, alongside Leaving Cert English titles, new Irish films, documentaries and films for primary school audiences. LAUNCH EVENT We are delighted to launch this term s events with two free screenings at the IFI: As You Like It (for teachers) on September 19th at 6.30 pm, and A Mighty Heart (for students) on September 20th at 10.30 am. Senior Cycle English Cinema Paradiso Original Version Sep 27, 10.30am This modern classic is showing for Leaving Cert 08 in the original version. The story is revealed in flashback, when Salvatore (Toto) returns to the small Sicilian town of his childhood for the funeral of his mentor, local projectionist Alfredo. FRANCE/ITALY 1998 COMEDY/DRAMA 123 MIN DIRECTOR: GUISEPPE TORNATORE Strictly Ballroom Oct 3, 10.30am Baz Luhrmann s flamboyant and colourful debut film tells the story of Scott and Fran who struggle to dance their own steps despite an authoritarian Dance Federation. Told as a fairy tale, romantic comedy and dance musical rolled into one, this is an excellent choice for comparative study: accessible, fun and fast-paced, it also deals with more serious themes. AUS 1992 COMEDY/DRAMA 94 MINS DIR: BAZ LUHRMANN Samhlaíocht Kerry Film Festival (Nov 5-9) Nov 5 As You Like It Sep 19, 6.30pm In Kenneth Branagh s latest big screen Shakespeare, he shifts the action to 19th century Japan. Beauty and peace are to be found in the forest which is home to the banished Duke and his followers. Bryce Dallas Howard is a terrific Rosalind. Her mischievous cross-dressing as Ganymede provides the dynamic behind the action in this bright and breezy version of the romantic comedy. UK/USA 2006 COMEDY 107 MINS DIR: KENNETH BRANAGH A Mighty Heart Sep 20, 10.30am On January 23, 2002, Mariane Pearl s (Angelina Jolie) world changed forever. Her husband Daniel, South Asia Bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid. The story drew them to Karachi where a gobetween had promised access to an elusive source. As Danny left for the meeting, he told Mariane he might be late for dinner. He never returned. This film is based on Mariane s memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl. USA/UK 2007 DRAMA 100 MINS DIR: MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM Courtesy of Paramount Vantage Pictures. Senior Cycle Senior Cycle Gaeilge French German Spanish An Turas Feasa Oct 11, 10.30am In conjunction with IMRAM, the Irish Language and Literature Festival, we are delighted to welcome adventurer and writer, Dermot Somers, to present this film. One of a seven-part series on walking journeys through some of the remoter landscapes of Ireland, Somers narrates as he goes, tracing mythology and discussing history at every opportunity. For this episode, he is on the Táin trail, walking east and deep into the Cooley Mountains following Queen Maeve and her obsession with the Great Brown Bull of Cooley. Here he finds the modern landscape still peppered with names and places that feature in the bloody pages of this Iron Age epic. Ideal for students interested in outdoor pursuits or the venture section of Gaisce The President s Award at any level. The film is subtitled and the presentation will be made in Irish and English. IRELAND 2006 DOCUMENTARY 52 MINS DIR: ART O BRIAIN Studyguide Studyguide for Clare sa Spéir and other gearrscannáin ghaeilge is available to download FREE from our website (www.irishfilm.ie). Comme une Image/Look at Me Oct 18, 23, 10.30am The choice for our French film project for 07/08 is this intelligent film which explores family relationships, the nature of celebrity and contemporary society s obsession with image. Lolita is a talented but insecure teenager who is trying to develop a classical singing career and a more positive sense of herself, despite being almost completely ignored by her self-obsessed and famous father. The studyguide, which will be available to download free from our website, will focus on themes of self-image, family, talent and celebrity. Stille Sehnsucht/Warchild Nov 21, Dec 18, 10.30am This riveting film explores the connection between Germany and nearby Bosnia, through the search of a resolute Bosnian woman for her daughter who was fostered during the war a decade earlier. Senada travels illegally from Sarajevo to Ulm in Germany, where she finds her daughter Kristina, being raised by a well-to-do German family. The heart-breaking dilemma faced by Senada illustrates how lives have been affected by the conflict. Accompanying studyguide will focus on themes of family, conflict and decision-making. Los Olvidados Nov 28 In recent films City of God and Amores Perros, the teeming and violent neighbourhoods of Rio de Janiero and Mexico City were powerfully depicted. But they both hearken back to this 1950 s classic from great Spanish director, Luis Buñuel. The story concerns a gang of violent teens in Mexico City who go around terrorising people. What Buñuel does so vividly is explore the characters inner motivations for their actions, rather than merely allowing the blame to fall easily on a neglectful society. MEXICO 1950 DRAMA 85 MINS ENGLISH SUBTITLES BLACK & WHITE DIRECTOR: LUIS BUÑUEL History The Rocky Road to Dublin Nov 13, 10.30am Modern Irish history students will find much of interest in this recently re-released 1966 documentary. Directed by then Paris-based Guardian journalist, Peter Lennon, it reveals Dublin society to be straining under the pressure of social and religious traditions. Comprising interviews with priests, students, politicians, schoolchildren and artists, the resulting film offers an insight into Irish life during the 1960s which, as the film shows, was anything but swinging. Transition Year Transition Year Module Telling Stories: Babel & Ten Canoes Since the early days of cinema, filmmakers have used the medium for storytelling. A film s impact depends a lot on the strength of its story and with these two films, the directors take two very different approaches. At each screening, our guest storytellers will talk about oral storytelling. They will draw attention to the respective style of each film and suggest ways in which students can explore different narrative styles in their own storytelling and writing. Samson Films Babel Nov 27, 10.00am Four families over three continents are linked, connected by chance and aspiration but separated by class, politics and communication gaps. Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his scriptwriter Guillermo Arriagga continue on from the interlocking tales of Amores Perres and 21 Grams with this multi-layered film. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett play an American couple travelling in Morocco who become connected to a Moroccan goatherd, a Japanese hunting enthusiast and his rebellious daughter, and a Mexican wedding south of the border. Like the title, the characters are scattered across the world. The film s huge ambition is to connect them through its non-chronological narrative and involve the viewers in figuring out the connections and related themes. FRANCE/US/MEXICO 2006 DRAMA/THRILLER 143 MIN DIRECTOR: ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU IFI links up with storyteller Niall de Búrca for this unique event. Niall will present the film, talk about oral narrative and make connections between the film s locations and respective storytelling tradition. Ten Canoes Nov 15, 10.30am How do we use stories? In this highly original folk-myth drama set among the Ganalbingu Aboriginal tribesmen, a storyteller blends the lives of his tribe s ancestors with those of his peers, with a story for their annual goose-egg gathering in the local swamps. The tale concerns a young warrior whose desire for one of his brother s wives brought disharmony, and it serves to warn young Davandi off the elder Minygulu s third wife. Aboriginal screen icon David Gulpilil narrates with humour and tenderness, cutting between his story and the progress of the egghunting. Through this we begin to see how stories are used for history but also for guidance and entertainment. AUSTRALIA 2006 DRAMA ENGLISH SUBTITLES 90 MIN DIRECTORS: ROLF DE HEER & PETER DJIGIRR Storyteller Aideen McBride will present this film, introducing the audience to storytelling from different traditions as well as encouraging students to explore different styles in their writing. Aideen will also be available for follow-up workshops on storytelling. New Irish Film Once Oct 25, 10.30am Once is the inspirational tale of two kindred spirits who find each other on the bustling streets of Dublin. One (Glenn Hansard from The Frames) is a street musician who lacks the confidence to perform his own songs. The other is a young mother trying to find her way in a strange new town. As their lives intertwine, they discover each other s talents and push one another to realise what each had only dreamt about before. Written and directed by John Carney (Bachelor s Walk). IRELAND 2007 DRAMA 85 MIN DIRECTOR: JOHN CARNEY Mean Creek Nov 8 Showing again for our TY Moving Image Module, this highly watchable debut feature from Jacob Aaron Estes takes an original look at the subject of bullying. USA 2004 DRAMA 90 MINS DIRECTOR: JACOB AARON ESTES Diamond Cinema, Monaghan Oct 10 SGC Enniscorthy Oct 26 Garage Dec 12, 13, 10.30am Director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Mark O Halloran follow-up their award-winning Adam and Paul with this contemporary tragic-comedy, set in a small town. Pat Shortt is unforgettable as Josie, caretaker of a local petrol station. Regarded as a harmless oddball but also the butt of jokes, he forms an unlikely friendship with teenager David who comes to work with him. A moment of carelessness however, causes events to spiral downwards and Josie s reactions are almost too painful to watch. There isn t a wasted scene in this engrossing film which proves once again that Abrahamson and O Halloran are raising the bar for Irish film. IRELAND 2007 DRAMA 85 MIN DIR: LENNY ABRAHAMSON Monaghan, Diamond Cinema Nov 30 SGC Enniscorthy Dec 4 Tsotsi Jan 15, 10.30am Growing up in post-apartheid Johannesburg, Tsotsi is the young leader of a criminal gang of youths who spend their time carjacking and robbing. When one of their victims is killed, he then robs a car and shoots the female owner before driving off. Realising that her baby boy is on the back seat he is at a loss about what to do with the infant. This dilema forces him to think about his actions. UK/STH. This astute documentary will certainly get you thinking before ordering your next coffee-to-go. Looking behind today s thriving coffee culture the directors ask where coffee beans are grown and why so many local producers live in such destitute conditions. With a particular focus on the fairtrade coffee movement, the film follows Tadesse Meskela, representative of the Ethiopian Oromo Coffee Farmers Co-op Union, who works every angle to get the co-ops the best possible return on their beans.
