Waterbears can survive for years in deep space. The mantis shrimp has evolved a form of vision that makes humans look completely blind in comparison. This class will look at some of the strangest and most extraordinary animals, past and present, and discuss how they are related to each other and to their environment. Some basic concepts of ecological biology will be introduced, but mostly, we will stand in awe before the plenitude and diversity of life. Supply Fee: $0 Instructor Contact: Ben Huizenga adso1327@gmail.com
BUILD & Construct Course Descriptions Each week we ll spend time building with Legos, Duplos, Kapla blocks, Lincoln logs, Magna tiles and good old fashioned wood blocks. We ll build tall towers and cantilevered palaces and whatever young minds can imagine. We ll build balloon-powered rocket ships and cars to race. Class is meant to appeal to children aged three to seven with blocks and building materials that are appropriate for their level of development. Children will be encouraged to interact with one another and cooperate on projects while respecting other s creations. Clean-up will be preceded by a level of destruction that would make Godzilla jealous. Expect a fun, imaginative play space. Parent participation for younger children is very welcome, but not required. Rhymes and limericks about building and objects will also be presented and encouraged. Class Fee: $0.00 Instructor Contact: Stephen Covington-O Kelley covingtonokelley@sbcglobal.net TEEN-LED WORKSHOPS Learn math through fun & sneaky workshops that seem to teach art, astronomy, dance, and more. Taught by their elders (actually homeschooled teens), 8-12 year olds will be introduced to the basics of math. A surprisingly different workshop will be taught each week. Fun, fun, fun for the littles! Awesome multi-age interaction for all! Class Fee: 0 Instructor Contact: Yvonnie DuBose Yvonnies@gmail.com
LEATHERWORKS Course Descriptions The plan for this class is to make a unique journal with its own protective carry case. In this class we will be constructing a wood mold and deckle frame for making paper. Also we can make a leather pouch/satchel to carry and protect the journal. After we have enough paper that can be cut into pages, we will start making a leather pouch/satchel with custom macrame strap. We can also (depending on time and progress) decorate our project with beads, paint, etc. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own paper scraps, dried flowers, etc(i will also supply scrap paper) to be blended into your own unique paper for your journal. Course Descriptions for E.D.G.E. Theatre MUGGLE QUIDDITCH Quidditch, a sport in the Harry Potter books, has inspired many people to play Muggle Quidditch, also known as Ground Quidditch, a non-magical (but yet, oh so magical) version of the game. As it is adapted from the game in the book, people have made many different versions. We have a very straightforward version that emphasizes fair play and teamwork! But just because we aren t flying doesn t mean it won t be a sweaty, athletic, magical experience! Last year s debut was a smash success and we hope to add more teams this year! This class will culminate in the 2nd Chicago Muggle Quidditch Cup where we will be given the option to test our skills against other youth teams 4 minimum 16 maximum Ages 6-up Class Fee: $75 for 6 weels Instructor Contact: Orion Couling orion@edgeoforion.com NerF ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse!
